It sounded like fc-match -v helvetica matched some file from xfonts-100dpi, but you didn't say which, so I tried to look, and it doesn't here. 1) make sure you have the package installed. duh. it is. 2) run fc-match -v helvetica | grep antialias 3) check output. empty. Your output should either be; antialias: FcTrue(w) or it is different. If it is the FcTrue one, then fontconfig is reporting the bitmap font to be antialiased. Something that is impossible for a bitmap font so the font is announced to fontconfig incorrectly.
