It is in my experience and that of many others... With XAA you're
basically disabling 2D acceleration with compiz, also you'll likely run
into trouble using XVideo.

If EXA doesn't work well, it's most likely due to its offscreen memory
area being too small, possibly due to suboptimal configuration.

Anyway, if XAA works for you...

I had an idea to try XAA and that works very well...

I was under the impression that EXA was the way to go on R300s and up.

Relevant section of xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI RADEON 9600XT"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "EnablePageFlip""true"
Option "DRI" "on"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
EndSection

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Did you try with EXA rather than the default XAA?

Thanks for the tip, Simon.

However, the performance is less than acceptable on my Radeon 9600XT
with the xorg radeon driver (rather than fglrx). Oh well...

Thanks,

If somebody can find out why compiz is segfaulting while running
dlclose() on the glib plugin, or explain where the dep on
libcompizconfig comes from, I'm more than happy to upload a fix. Not so
much just adding a dependency without understanding why. It's too late
for lenny r0, but could still happen for r1...
(also I'm not sure why it's unloading the plugin in the first place)

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#496519: [compiz] Re: Bug#496519: release-critical?

2009-02-13 Thread Simon Wenner
Package: compiz
Version: 0.7.6-7

I'm also affected by this bug. Installing
compizconfig-settings-manager fixed the segfault.

si...@beutelteufel:~$ compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 1002:9442 (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1280x1024) to maximum 3D texture size (8192): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: not present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Starting gtk-window-decorator
/usr/bin/compiz: line 393: 5006 Speicherzugriffsfehler
${COMPIZ_BIN_PATH}${COMPIZ_NAME} $COMPIZ_OPTIONS "$@" $COMPIZ_PLUGINS

VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850]
Driver: fglrx 8-12-4

Is there anyone that can run it without this dependency? If not, you should
consider to raise the severity of this bug to critical and try to fix it for
lenny.

It seems to affect a lot of systems and it's not what I expect from a package
in a
stable release. I'm aware that compiz has many other unresolved problems, but
the
dependencies should be correct.

Thanks.
