Booting with KMS disabled (by adding the i915.modeset=0 kernel boot parameter)
solves the problems.

The packages touched in the last upgrade of that specific machine were:

 [...] libc6-i386 libc6-dev libc6 [...] pciutils [...] libpci3 [...] locales

I tried downgrading the above packages, but that had no effect.

Bug#536011: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Display corruption and X crashes after a dist-upgrade that didn't touch any X related package.

2009-07-06 Thread Guus Sliepen
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.7.1-1
Severity: important

After dist-upgrading several machines, I got display corruption and occasional
hangs and crashes on two machines that have Intel graphics chips. The two
machines, an EeePC 901 and a Shuttle X50, run Debian unstable, without
experimental packages. The 901 has an Atom N270 chip, which is single core, 32
bit. The X50 has an Atom 330, which is a dual core, 64 bit processor. One has a
GNOME desktop, the other an XFCE4 desktop. Both have recent kernels with KMS
enabled, but corruption seems to happen with 2.6.29.2, 2.6.29.4 and 2.6.30.1 in
exactly the same way.

The symptoms are similar: startup via gdm or slim seem to work OK. Desktop
appears normally. Starting a GNOME terminal or using the panel menus seems to
work OK. Starting an xterm causes immediate corruption: black lines with
occasional white pixels appear across the entire screen, fonts are unreadable.
After a some time, even when doing nothing after logging in, X hangs or
crashes. If X restarts, corruption sometimes also happens during the start of
gdm or slim, but never after a hard reset. Trying to start programs makes
crashes happen quicker.

As mentioned in the subject, one of the machines dist-upgraded both on the 4th
of July and on the 6th (today); only after today's upgrade did the corruption
happen. Between the two upgrades, the machine was turned on and off a number of
times, so it could not have been from an earlier upgrade that did not fully
take effect because old versions of programs/libraries were still in use. The
packages touched in the last upgrade of that specific machine were:

gnome-desktop-environment gnome gnome-core libc6-i386 libc6-dev libc6
