Done, I moved it out of the way

  This is blacklist.conf

  # This file lists modules which will not be

  install pci:v*d*sv*sd*bc03sc*i* /bin/true

 And this line.

   Done.

Rebooted with my old xorg.conf file and things are back to normal.
Which begs the questions what was that display_class.conf file doing
there inthe first place, and that install pci:v..etc etc line in
blacklist.conf?

At any rate thanks to Julien, (and Sven) and a big thumbs up. I
dunno what the problem was...but it's gone.

My system was fine with the previous driver - now without an xorg.conf, X
instead loads Vesa instead of Intel. With xorg.conf it refuses to load anything
saying no screens found. modeset 1 or modeset 0 makes no difference.

Just fyi: I went back to 2:2.13.0-2 (from Squeeze )
and everything is fine - modeset=1, loads Intel driver, no xorg.conf.

Weird, you're not getting drm and i915 loaded at all. What's the output
of:
/sbin/modprobe -b -n -v pci:v8086d2572sv1028sd0277bc03sc00i00

Do you have a display_class file in /etc/modprobe.d? Or anything with
'blacklist i915'?
