I have just installed fimware-linux-nonfree and restarted the X server. This 
makes no difference:

xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
 no adaptors present

 caused by xv support gone missing and is totally expected behavior
 of mplayer. try enabling software zoom as a workaround, but the real
 fix is to get xv working again.
