thanks for your report. I have finally found some time to investigate
this problem; it's been reported upstream and the patch has been merged,
so a fixed package should appear soon.

I took the liberty of blogging what I did, so that one can learn how to
get a detailed/useful bug report upstream:
  http://blog.mraw.org/2011/12/12/Fixing_synaptics_on_powerpc/

By doing that, you ensure the upstream maintainers get your bug report,
even if the distro maintainer is otherwise busy or lagging behind in the
bug triaging area. Now, the upstream maintainers might have a life too,
but that improves the chances of getting a fix sooner than later.

Mraw,
KiBi.

I also see this on a PowerBook G4.

processor : 0
cpu : 7447A, altivec supported

revision: 1.2 (pvr 8003 0102)
bogomips: 73.72
timebase: 18432000
platform: PowerMac
model : PowerBook5,6
machine : PowerBook5,6
motherboard : PowerBook5,6 MacRISC3 Power Macintosh
detected as : 287 (PowerBook G4 15")
pmac flags : 001b
L2 cache: 512K unified
pmac-generation : NewWorld

It worked with the initial squeeze install and stopped working upon
upgrading to wheezy.
