At first, I just had to manually fix the backspace/delete issue (this was a minor irritation). Now, however, my Alt key by default seems to be generating an Alt keysym rather than a Meta keysym as is customary on PC keyboards. I've fixed this using gdm by adding the following to /etc/gdm/Init/Default: /usr/bin/X11/xmodmap -e 'keycode 22 = BackSpace' \ -e 'remove Mod1= Alt_L' \ -e 'keycode 0x40 = Meta_L' \ -e 'addMod4= Meta_L' While this has the desired effect that emacs, etc, see my left Alt key as a Meta key, X now ignores the left alt key so I need to make sure to use the right Alt key to switch VTs, kill X, etc. This behaviour occurs independant of whether I use startx or gdm to start X up. So I guess what I'm asking is, what might have gotten messed up that would cause this behavior (I'm pretty sure I haven't messed with any of the system-wide config files and my setup works on all other machines, including Debian ones) and/or what should I do to revert the configuration? The dpkg man page doesn't seem to suggest how I would force it to reinstall ie /etc/X11/xkb (--confnew doesn't do it). Apologies if this is confusing. -- System Information Debian Release: testing/unstable Kernel Version: Linux KeyserSoze.snurgle.org 2.4.0-test10 #2 SMP Sun Nov 5 13:59:27 EST 2000 i686 unknown Versions of the packages xbase-clients depends on: ii cpp2.95.3-4 The GNU C preprocessor. ii libc6 2.2-8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries and Timezone ii libfreetype6 2.0.1-1FreeType 2 font engine, shared library files ii libncurses55.0-8 Shared libraries for terminal handling ii libxaw74.0.2-1X Athena widget set library ii xlibs 4.0.2-1X Window System client libraries ii xlibmesa3 4.0.2-1XFree86 version of Mesa 3D graphics library ^^^ (Provides virtual package libgl1) --- Begin /etc/X11/Xmodmap (modified conffile) Config file not present or no permissions for access --- End /etc/X11/Xmodmap --- Begin /etc/X11/Xresources/xbase-clients (modified conffile) Config file not present or no permissions for access --- End /etc/X11/Xresources/xbase-clients --- Begin /etc/X11/app-defaults/Beforelight (modified conffile) Config file not present or no permissions for access --- End /etc/X11/app-defaults/Beforelight --- Begin /etc/X11/app-defaults/Bitmap (modified conffile) Config file not present or no permissions for access --- End /etc/X11/app-defaults/Bitmap --- Begin /etc/X11/app-defaults/Bitmap-color (modified conffile) Config file not present or no permissions for access --- End /etc/X11/app-defaults/Bitmap-color --- Begin /etc/X11/app-defaults/Clock-color (modified conffile) Config file not present or no permissions for access --- End /etc/X11/app-defaults/Clock-color --- Begin /etc/X11/app-defaults/Editres (modified conffile) Config file not present or no permissions for access --- End /etc/X11/app-defaults/Editres --- Begin /etc/X11/app-defaults/Editres-color (modified conffile) Config file not present or no permissions for access --- End /etc/X11/app-defaults/Editres-color ---
