Yes, and I think it would make more sense (and would prefer it) if
Branden gave all the pre-release .orig files unique names
(e.g. "4.1.99.pre-1.4.2.0.orig"), and would switch to (e.g.)
"4.2.0.orig" only when he's sure that the orig will no longer change.

But I don't build X often enough to have complained publicly before
now, and I probably won't complain publicly again, even if he doesn't
change. It's his package, and, despite a few odd quirks like this, he
does an outstanding job with it.

Read the package changelog.  :)

Is it normal that the xfree86_4.2.0.orig.tar.gz
changes between -pre releases?

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/src$ dpkg-source -x xfree86_4.2.0-0pre1v3.dsc
dpkg-source: error: file xfree86_4.2.0.orig.tar.gz has size 53738179 instead of
expected 53757032

I can unpacked -0pre1v4 just fine.

Either way is fine.

I'm trying to build 4.2.1-0pre1v1 now.

 m68k and sh4 binaries are uploaded
 (Yes, I known 4.2.1-0pre1v1 is already released):

 http://people.debian.org/~ishikawa/XFree86/4.2.0-0pre1v4/sh4/

Yup, I briefed this up. Thanks for catching it.

 Build on HPPA was failed (and perhaps will be failed on ARM):

 xc/config/cf/xfree86.cf contains these lines (line 664...):

---
/*
 * Intel StrongARM and Hewlett-Packard PA-RISC
 */
#if defined(Arm32Architecture) || defined(HPArchitecture)
# ifndef XF86Server
#  define XF86ServerYES

 On Arm32Architecture and HPArchitecture refers `DevelDrivers' but
DevelDrivers define is missing about these architecture.

 For example, on PPC and m68k (line 571...):

---
/*
 * Motorola 68k and PowerPC drivers
 */
#if defined(PpcArchitecture) || defined(Mc68020Architecture)
# ifndef XF86Server

#  define XF86CardDrivers   ati mga glint nv s3 s3virge sis savage\
trident chips tdfx fbdev \
DevelDrivers vga \
XF86OSCardDrivers XF86ExtraCardDrivers
# endif
---

 Defines about ARM and HPPA are generated from 004 patch. Please fix
to include about DevelDrivers defines (or just remove DevelDrivers
from XF86CardDrivers define).
