Hello...

Installed JunkMail on my corporate mailserver (150 employees), and so far,
I've set the SUBJECT text to [Spam]. My boss thinks it should be something
less definate. He suggests [Spam?] in order to give the impression that the
message *may* be spam.

I'm interested in what other admins who use SUBJECT are doing for your
text, and why.

Thx,
D.

We have just released Declude JunkMail v1.52 (at
http://www.declude.com/junkmail/manual.htm ).

It has two fixes since the last beta, both involving CIDR ranges (you no
longer need to zero out non-significant bits, so you can have
"192.168.112.42/24" instead of "192.168.112.0/24"; also, /32 can now be
used to designate a single IP).

It also includes some very minor fixes since the last released version
(1.46), CIDR range support, a "WHITELIST TO" and "WHITELIST TODOMAIN" for
quick per-user/per-domain "opt-out", and the new "SpamHider" ATTACH action
(Pro version only).

You can upgrade to this version for free if you purchased Declude JunkMail
within the past year, or have an up-to-date Service Agreement.

I hope not... as I need to send something today to 295 users

Since downloading the 1.49 beta on Wednesday [was it Wednesday? seems like
it was; everything is a blur lately], my mailserver seems to have developed
a problem with List delivery. The List submissions are accepted, scanned,
and dumped into the spool directory as nice tidy .LST files, and then they
just sit there. Very well done indeed. Seems like we had a problem similar
to this a couple of dozen versions ago? Anyway, I've been pushing these
critters out manually, but I'll let the next one sit and see if it
eventually goes out on its own. Maybe on the next queue run?

This problem has been confirmed. You were correct about the size being the
problem. If the ATTACH action is used on an E-mail where the body is
larger the 8K, the two messages above will appear in the logs, the original
E-mail will be delivered without the Declude headers, and a stray .SM$ file
will appear in the spool directory. Since the E-mail gets delivered, it is
safe to delete those stray .SM$ files.

We should have 1.48 ready later today that will fix this problem.

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] HELP: I just got listed on ORDB

2002-03-28 Thread Chris Bone

thanks Scott

Yes, I have the Hijack in place and it is saying 2 got relayed ;)

I have now gone to the "No relay" option

Chris

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/28/02 10:23AM >>>

>I have my IMail set to "Relay for local hosts only"

To make sure that you are not an open relay, you can either use IMail's
"Relay for addresses" (in which case you would enter a list of "safe" IP
addresses that your users may come from; anyone not coming from those safe
IPs would need to use SMTP AUTH), or "No mail relay" (which really means
that everyone must use SMTP AUTH). Note that relay setting apply only to
outgoing E-mail, so no matter what your settings are, your users will still
be able to get mail.

Any other relay options will allow spammers to send mail through your
server. In the case of "Relay for local hosts", IMail will allow spammers
to send unlimited spam if they pretend to be using a return address on one
of your domains.

Are you running Declude Hijack (which would limit the amount of mail that a
spammer could send)?

Please see:

about relay options. Particularly the paragraph that reads:

Note that only 'No Mail Relay' or 'Relay for Addresses' can prevent
unauthorized relaying by remote senders who "spoof" as local users.

You MUST set your options to 'No Mail Relay' or 'Relay for Addresses' to
close your open relay!

Hello,

I have learned something by accident...

if you send an email to a valid email address but put a dash and another
name at the end... it sents it into a folder which has that name (ie.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ) now if i go into my account by the web
browser... there will be a folder there called junkmail and it will have
what ever was sent there

[Declude.JunkMail] User's Managing SPAM

Is it possible to allow SPAM caught by Declude to go into a folder say "SPAM"

This will shift the responsibility of going through all those emails onto the users

Is this possible?

Has anyone written any admin screens for the user to manage their settings? (Like

I understand that feeling.

After much experimentation I am getting best results with:
RBL, DUL, OSRELAY, OSDUL, and SPAMHEADERS.
I ignore everything else.

I still get false positives. Fortunately the "legitimate" mail that is
caught is not terribly difficult to define into several classes.

My solution is a relatively simple perl prorgram that opens the spam folder
and lists the messages present for me by browser. The program dipslays a
list of items in the spam folder showing date/time, to, from, subject. I
have a hyperlink that opens a new window which displays either the message
or recipient list file as I choose. I use this tool if I need to inspect a
message. I also have a checkbox then as well as a select all checkbox and I
use these to either delete messages or move messages back to the queue.

In additon I have a "known exception" list that is based rather simply on
from and to addresses. When the program refreshes it checks the spam folder
list with the known exception list and moves any matches back to the queue
automatically. I also have a special exception handler in the program that
I can code as I need but so far it has not been necessary. My "known
excetions" so far number only about 15 and that is taking care of 90% or
better of my false positives. I think eventually I'll have it even higher
than that.

Right now I am just using it manually via web browser and I have it
refreshing every 2 minutes. I probably will make 4 programs out of the one
eventually. One will be to manage the special and known exceptions so those
rules are separated from the handler. A second will be set to run the
exceptions as a periodic scheduled task. Then the third will be the browser
based inspector.

With my little program inspector I have to say this is working better for me
than I could have ever imagined.

We are now looking for beta testers for our new program, Declude
Hijack. Declude Hijack is designed to prevent your mail server from being
hijacked (a spammer sending out huge volumes of mail through it). It is
designed to protect you from both external users (if you are running an
open relay) as well as internal users (people who you have given permission
to use your mail server, but they have decided to send spam or have had
their account stolen).

It works by sensing when someone is sending too much mail in a given time
period. You can control how much is too much.

Please let me know if you are interested in helping beta test this program,
or if you would like more information about it. Thanks.
