something I wanted to show you guys before I left, but didn't...

It is a packaging idea for people who distribute LibO on CD/DVD.
Granted, it's not going to be everyone's idea of "practical" or
"professional" but it does demonstrate a valuable link to our values and
gives us a chance to really stand out.
Why?
Because the package is made entirely from paper.

A4 paper and A3 paper, folded in on itself, to hide the edges and in a
way that makes the packaging both a brochure, and a case.
It fits two Discs neatly, can be printed on any printer (bleed is
accounted for).
It does not require any glueing or cutting (true to the values of
Origami, from which it is inspired).
If printed on 100% recycled paper (as intended) it would show our
commitment to sustainability. More than traditional PVC cases at least.
Above all else, it is actually just very nice to hold. Many people I
gave it to said it reminded them of old 5.25inch floppy disks from "back
in the day".

Intrigued?...

This might be more of an idea that sits well with us tree-hugging
student-types, but I just thought it might be worth sharing.
If you guys think it's worth exploring, I can upload the template so you
can print one and fold it for yourself.
It really has to be held to be appreciated I think.

And it may be the best existing indication of how I imagine our
"branding language" could look and feel.
Simple, clean, honest, pure and vibrant.

Bernhard, Christoph, I'm really off-tempo here, if there is anything I

Great idea! I would also use it. I can also see it printed on card stock
to make it more rigid.

It would be great if you could contribute to the new download page

The discussion takes place on the website list, but no action seems to

I started a new wiki page for UI element proposals, trying to integrate
different mockups by looking and discussion the single elements:

As the UI is nearly unchanged from the OOo UI, you should have a look at

Don't know if it is helpful at the moment.

Re: [libreoffice-design] [Vote] Consistent theme for screenshots

2011-07-09 Thread Vamsi Kodali

On 07/07/2011 04:23 PM, Bernhard Dippold wrote:

Hi all,

there have been lots of mail in this thread [1] about the advantages
and disadvantaged of a recommendation for a consistent theme for
screenshots covering documentation screenshots as well as marketing
screenshots.

During the discussion several people agreed on a proposal by Jean
compromising between readability on greylevel printing and branding
language compliance in colored online doc versions or marketing material.

It is based on the Clearlooks theme (on GNOME, ports to KDE and
Windows XP available too) with a definite font with weight and size
(Liberation bold 11 pt for window titles) and adds a LibreOffice
palette color (Libre Green 2) for highlighted areas like windows headers.

If you want to establish a recommendation to use this modified theme
for screenshots, please add "+1" here:

-1
Others want to propose a broad variety of different themes on
screenshots in order to show the diversity of LibreOffice and it's
possibility to be installed on different platforms in the
documentation screenshots.

They fear that new contributors might turn away when they find out,
that there is a recommendation how to create screenshots for
documentation and marketing.

If you prefer a way without caring about recommendations, just
creating the screenshots you like, please add your "+1" here:
+1. I think we should follow the default themes for Windows and Mac OS X
where the one unified theme for all Linux distros.

A second question has been raised by Marc inside the thread:
He asked for a unified cursor style to be included in thee package.

His proposal: Use a standardized cursor theme like "OpenZone white"
for the screenshots and include this cursor in the theme for the colors.

If you agree with him on the cursor/pointers, please sign here for a
second time with "+1":
-1. I think we can take screenshots without any cursors. Even if we end
up deciding to have cursors, I vote for following default OS theme
cursors (see my other vote above)

On the other hand I think that most platforms provide similar pointers
and cursors, so this part doesn't need to be included in this voting.
I'd propose a more inclusive wiki page including a recommendation to
use a consistent cursor. "-1"

So you have two votes - I hope you understand what I mean...

Best regards

Bernhard

RE: [libreoffice-design] merge Print Layout pages

2011-07-09 Thread nick rundy

If I understand you correctly, you are proposing to keep "Print Layout" how it
is and instead add a new view-layout called "Draft Layout." And this "Draft
Layout" would merge the ends and beginnings of pages together like the pic I
uploaded to imgur illustrates?
If I understand this correctly, the "Draft Layout" sounds like a great
solution. But I would kindly suggest adding a setting that lets users set
"Draft Layout" as the default layout that Writer displays when it is opened. So
when I open Writer to begin a document, "Draft Layout" is the view that is
selected by default. I would have to manually change it if I wanted "Print
Layout" or "Web Layout". Does this make sense?

Hi Andrew!

Great that you like the LibO icons ... concerning the remaining once, my
answer might be not that helpful, since I'm not an expert when it comes
to our source code repository. There, you find all the (default) icons
being based on the Tango theme.

Web access is available here:

But how to extract them - don't know. Maybe the Tango theme page is
better suited for your needs:

Hope this helps :-)

RE: [libreoffice-design] merge Print Layout pages

2011-07-09 Thread Christoph Noack
Hi all,

just a short comment, since I once analyzed some of the today available
views in Writer (during the OOo UX times). I think that the enhancement
request is just a "half-way" solution that just adds some more
complexity to Writer without solving the real issue.

For example, even Microsoft changed the behavior from 2003 to 2007 and
made this feature "more hidden". I assume they wanted to completely
remove it, but feared the feedback by the existing user base.

My take: The enhancement request should target a real "Draft" view,
which considers page breaks and the width of the real pages without
showing the borders etc. This would also solve a lot of other issues in
this area ... not only one. But, this is really tough work - I omit all
the details, but I talked with one of the Devs during the FOSDEM and I
got some introduction in the internal issues of the Writer structure
(there, we talked about an outline view).

Do you agree somehow? If yes, I'd like to rewrite the enhancement
request.

Cheers,
Christoph

1) Find out the message number of the mail you want to reply to.

The most easy way is to have a look at the headers:

You mail, Florian, contains this Return-Path:

The number in this path is the mail number.

2) Send a single mail request to the mailserver.

This is easily to be done by sending an empty mail to

(for your mail it would be design+get-2...@global.libreoffice.org )

3) Reply to the mail you receive (which should be the original mail).

As reply to the original message your reply will be positioned in the
thread at the right place.

I don't know if this works even without being subscribed (in my eyes it
should work nevertheless), but for subscribed people it works.

If this might be helpful for others too, it could be added to the wiki
and written in a way applicable to all the LibreOffice lists.

Therefore I CC'd the website list (should be the right place for
follow-ups) - perhaps someone is interested in doing this...

Best regards

Bernhard

Re: [libreoffice-design] [Vote] Consistent theme for screenshots

Hi Bernhard,

thanks for managing this ...

Note: I still think that LibreOffice Green 1 would be more pleasing to
the eye in the long run, but Green 2 is okay as well.

Note: Guidelines help, even if there are sometimes reasons to not
enforce them (e.g. for the new features section, if only a "quickly
made" screenshot by a developer is available and we lack time to re-do
it.)

By the way, the question itself is a bit hard to understand - so please
guys be aware that
"-1 = recommendation is good", and
"+1 = no recommendation wanted".

Changing cursor themes is an additional step and usually not required
when taking screenshots (assuming that the cursor doesn't vary too much
between the operating systems). But, if somebody adds this as an
optional recommendation and provides a package for that - why not use
it?

Cheers,

The English docs team can use the existing recommendations in the
Contributors' Guide.

[libreoffice-design] Re: [Vote] Consistent theme for screenshots

2011-07-09 Thread Florian Reisinger

Sorry for starting a new thread, but I could not reply to the last mail,
because I signed up later...

Hi Bernhard: thanks for doing this.

   Hi all,

there have been lots of mail in this thread [1] about the advantages and
disadvantaged of a recommendation for a consistent theme for screenshots
covering documentation screenshots as well as marketing screenshots.

During the discussion several people agreed on a proposal by Jean
compromising between readability on greylevel printing and branding
language compliance in colored online doc versions or marketing material.

It is based on the Clearlooks theme (on GNOME, ports to KDE and Windows
XP available too) with a definite font with weight and size (Liberation
bold 11 pt for window titles) and adds a LibreOffice palette color
(Libre Green 2) for highlighted areas like windows headers.

If you want to establish a recommendation to use this modified theme for
   screenshots, please add "+1" here:

My favourite +1

Others want to propose a broad variety of different themes on
screenshots in order to show the diversity of LibreOffice and it's
possibility to be installed on different platforms in the documentation
   screenshots.

They fear that new contributors might turn away when they find out, that
there is a recommendation how to create screenshots for documentation
   and marketing.

If you prefer a way without caring about recommendations, just creating
the screenshots you like, please add your "+1" here:

+ 1 (best to use the system defaults for both LO and the OS)

A second question has been raised by Marc inside the thread:
He asked for a unified cursor style to be included in thee package.

His proposal: Use a standardized cursor theme like "OpenZone white" for
the screenshots and include this cursor in the theme for the colors.

If you agree with him on the cursor/pointers, please sign here for a
   second time with "+1":

+1 (although it wasn't really discussed with feedback and meant as

aproposal)

-1

 -1 (prefer system defaults)

On the other hand I think that most platforms provide similar pointers
and cursors, so this part doesn't need to be included in this voting.
I'd propose a more inclusive wiki page including a recommendation to use
   a consistent cursor. "-1"

So you have two votes - I hope you understand what I mean...

   Best regards

   Bernhard
