Re: [libreoffice-design] IRC chat + whiteboards
Hello, ... haven't heard anything either. S. Gecko's whiteboard has been hijacked by Andrew anyway. So, I guess, Andrew should deal with > either radically cleaning it up or shelving it. Im sorry I thought when I saw Mireks call to change the whiteboards that it was an invitation to start working on them. we can't continue working on the anything(much) till they are done. so I figured that id help out with the process. was not till I did a few and had some questions about them that I thought of asking the person who made the whiteboard. I just want to get us back to the point of working on things. I just picked some that were pretty easy and some that had a lot of the same sections but just needed to be reordered and changed a bit. should I have posted it on the mailing list or something? I do not want to offend anyone, just want to get back to work. things were getting pretty stangnet and did not want to see us go back through another period of not doing anything again. -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-design] Windows 8 version?
Hello, my name is Alberto Delgado, i'm new here so please correct me if i do something wrong. Windows 8 is a few months away from launching into the market, i have installed the consumers preview on my computer, and looking for a free alternative to MS Office i installed LibreOffice. The program works perfectly but it's completely... weird in W8 due to the extreme redesign in the UI. I believe that it's a great opportunity for LibreOffice to enter the W8 marketplace, it would direct many users away from MS Office 2012 and into LibreOffice. However, with the current design of the program it just won't work, i have been using Windows 8 for a while, so i can start drafting how the program could look like to be in tone with the Windows 8 UI. However i am not a graphic designer so i can not really make the graphics for the program, but i can design the basic UI. If you believe this can be done and are interested in designing the interface for the Windows 8 app, the best way to go is to try Windows 8 and get a grasp of how apps should work and look like. Mirek, I guess it would be the best if you could pick anything that's useful for a Hide the Status Bar whitebooard (as proposed by Kendy) and shelve everything you can't use use under Whiteboards/Archive. > Astron, on your "PropertiesButtonLayout" page, the summary should only > state the goal of your whiteboard, such as "Improve dialog usability". I would make a case for it being at the top (it is kinda important to know the status quo before reading through proposals), but it's late already. > We also need to figure out how we're going to shape our HIG. I think we should start from some general ideas like [1] and then work through the details. Note, how about any HIG starts with some sort of ideological framework. At least we should not start from "how are we going to work with toolbars?"... IMHO. Good night. Astron. [libreoffice-design] IRC chat + whiteboards
Hi everyone, the next IRC chat will be this Saturday, again at 16:00 GMT on the #libreoffice-design channel. This will now be the official chat time every week. Just like last week, I'm not sure whether I'll be able to attend this chat, and I hope one of you will take over as the moderator if there's need to. Alex, Astron, you've been active in the chats so far as well as on the mailing list, which makes you good candidates. As for whiteboards, we need a) establish whether whiteboards should have owners, b) finish converting old whiteboards to the whiteboard template, c) determine the process each whiteboard should go through. To get B done, we need to contact some of the creators, as they can best formulate what the original goal of the whiteboard was. Christoph Noack has authored "DocumentCheck", "Calc Range Names", "Progress Indicators", and "Find bar". Christoph, if you're reading this, could you tweak those whiteboards to follow the new whiteboard template, or at least tell us if you don't have the time? I don't remember seeing Daud, Michelr, or S.Gecko anywhere on the mailing list recently, and their last wiki contributions date back a few months, so I assume they're not active anymore (correct me if I'm wrong), which means that we need to tweak the "Styles and Formatting window", "Macros dialogs", and "MenuIdeas" whiteboards ourselves. AFAIK, Paulo José is no longer active, so we also need to tweak "Writer Status Bar Remaking". Alex, about the "Table styles" and "Templates and documents rework" pages, the open points should be on the mailing list and not on the whiteboard. Within Scope, there really should be no wishes or maybes: if it's a requirement for all proposals, put it into scope; if it's not, make it part of your own proposal. Also, let others contribute their own proposals before you move the status to "design taking shape". Astron, on your "PropertiesButtonLayout" page, the summary should only state the goal of your whiteboard, such as "Improve dialog usability". It should be a single design-oriented goal and it shouldn't suggest the solution (that's what the Proposal section is for). "Current state" should be at the top of Relevant art. As the whiteboard seems to apply to dialogs in general, I'd put in in the HIG section. We also need to figure out how we're going to shape our HIG.
Re: [libreoffice-design] Updated Whiteboard template with more instructional text

"What is a whiteboard?" is answered in the "Definition of terms" section. The warning to "not use whiteboards for discussion" isn't really of use for whiteboard creators, but rather for people who want to discuss the whiteboard. I think the sole link under "Discussion" makes it clear enough for all whiteboard visitors that all discussions take place on that link. BTW, even people that are not subscribed to the list can post, so there's no need to use the "Talk" page on the wiki. * the listed States have do now use primarily nouns > ok * there are some changes of colour for the State and the Scope table > I like the stronger colors, but I'd prefer to have a red "Out of Scope" header. As LibreOffice doesn't have a red color among its marketing colors (oddly enough), could you make up one? Orange just doesn't have the same "DON'T do this" warning effect. > * there is now a sub-head called Owner > I disagree with whiteboards having an owner. The creator of a whiteboard should take good care that he defines the purpose and the scope of the whiteboard. Once that is done, the whiteboard belongs to the community. That means that only if the community agrees can the scope be changed, and that links to bugs, relevant art, and proposals can be added by anyone in the community. It also means that nobody has a superior vote to the rest, which makes the design process more democratic. > * there is instructional text for Related Bugs, Terminology, Personas, > Relevant Art > I think the content of these is self-explanatory if you present examples of this content. Again, I'd prefer to keep the whiteboard template looking like a whiteboard. (The "Tentative Design" section hasn't been designed yet, that's why it uses descriptive text.) > > What do you think, can I go ahead and change these things? > > Astron. > > -- > Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org > Problems? > http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ > Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette > List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ > All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be > deleted > -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-design] Updated Whiteboard template with more instructional text
Hi all, I'd like to propose some more changes to the Whiteboard Template, see here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Astron/Whiteboard_Template So, what has changed: * under Summary, there's now some instructional text (it's incomplete, but that's a feature, I wanted to be brief enough) * the listed States have do now use primarily nouns * there are some changes of colour for the State and the Scope table * there is now a sub-head called Owner * there is instructional text for Related Bugs, Terminology, Personas, Relevant Art What do you think, can I go ahead and change these things? [libreoffice-design] New icons in Tango
Hi all, about a week ago, Michael (M.) noticed on ux-advise that some icons in LibreOffice's Tango theme had been replaced. Well, I replaced those and didn't do the sensible thing and discuss these changes first... I'd like to make up for that lack of discussion. Thus, I've created a wiki page to show an overview over all the icons I've changed since 3.5: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Tango_refresh_3.6 The Start Center icons have been discussed on the Design list already, albeit mostly with Alex. There are a few icons that I feel are mostly uncritical (Media Player, Writer Toolbar, the icons imported from the "official" Tango theme in the Extension Manager) and of course there are some that definitely need another round of replacing (Open File, Extension) and some that hopefully only need refining (Formula "f(x)" icon). So, I would love to hear your feedback! (Of course, if you want to work on these further, that'd be great.[1]) Astron. [1] I have not yet uploaded the source SVG's, but as soon as I come around to doing that I will.
Re: [libreoffice-design] Proportional cropping of images
A little chain between the 2, like Gimp. steve On 2012-04-12 17:47, Jean-Francois Nifenecker wrote: Hi, dunno if this is UX or Design only, so I post to both ;) When we want to redimension/crop an image (eg in Writer), we can alternatively use: -- the mouse we just drag the image handles to get the wanted result. For a precise handling, we need to go to the Image dialog. -- the Image dialog (double-click the image) In the Crop thumbnail we just change the percentage(s) or the dimension(s) and that's it. Well, not if we need a proportional cropping by knowing a reference dimension. Here we *must* change the percent only, taking care of the similar proportions ourselves to get the result. Changing a dimension value will require to look at the corresponding percentage, then get to the percent value for the other dimension and change that percentage proportionaly. Doh. Also, I'm not sure the percent value to be an exact calculation from a dimension value as percentages never seem to display any decimals. ISTM that a "Proportional" checkbox would be welcome in the dialog in order to bypass those multiple steps and allow a simple way of changing dimensions proportionaly. That checkbox state should be recorded. This has annoyed me since the very beginning when I got to use OOo 1.1. Would the change be a big deal?
