Re: [Design-team] Concepts for F14

2010-05-12 Thread Nelson Marques
Hi,

Sorry to interfere on this thread. You provide good information but
there also some other possible associations, one of them being scottish
and translates Laughlin as "from lochs".

An online etymology dictionary points into something way different, a
Scandinavian word meaning: one from norway. Which makes sense
considering Norwegians and Danish men conquered most Great Britain
during the 9th and 10th centuries, so a bond can be established with
scotts and irish.

If it's interesting to anyone I would probably recommend people running
the name through several etymology dictionaries and reporting their
postings. Most likely will help many artists.

I hoped I helped a bit.

Hy there,

hopefully nobody forgets the physician
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_B._Laughlin and his work on the
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_Hall_effect so my interpretation
would be a more surreal concept work here and mathematical pictures ;-)
Thats a challenge: the more or less ... lets say chaotic way of
designing and producing art combined with the structured mathematical

I wonder what the 'correct' pronunciation is... it's tempting to read
it as Laugh-lin (joke distribution) :)

loff-lin?
lor-lin?
laff-lin?

You made a very good observation.

Laugh / Lin

and Lin was many times used regarding Linux... there was even an old
"loadlin.exe" and probably many other situations. Dangerous road, but I
would assume that no one will turn that to us as free ammunition.
Personally I do like the chosen name.

This would be more where McLaughlin is derived.

Using the English forms of the words.
Both Scottish and Irish are basically have the same lineage
And native spaekers can usually understand each other.

Maybe forget the warrior part of the word.
Use the H2O bit

Linn = conjures up > lakes, rivers, bays, streams.
or Book of Kells style waves.

Real life example of Linn

The suggestion for the name included this thematic material:

Robert Goddard was a professor of physics, and so is Robert
Laughlin. He was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in physics for his
explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Moreover he
argues for emergence which is a concept that says "The whole is
more than the sum of its parts". Fedora is more than the sum of
its software. . . .

[Theme suggestion:] Something that can illustrate the emergence
concept, like multiple objects combined to create a new one (more
complex).

Perhaps this could spark some interesting ideas!
