[Design-team] Self-intro

2010-07-14 Thread Ian MacGregor
Greetings,
My name is Ian MacGregor, I use the nickname "ardchoille" online, and I am a
member of Clan Gregor. My nickname (ardchoille) was taken from the phrase
"Ard Choille!", which is Scottish Gaelic for "To the high trees!" - the war
cry of my clan. My Fedora wiki page can be found at:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Ardchoille42

I served in the US Navy, as a field medic (NEC HM-8404), where I visited
several countries and participated in UNITAS. Fraternities I joined during
my time in the US Navy include Order of the Golden Dragon (crossed the
international date line), Order of the Ditch (passed through the panama
canal), Order of the Shellback (crossed the equator). I also served in the
Texas Army National Guard.

I have been using computers since 1983 and building computers since 2001. I
have been using Linux since it became my primary operating system in 2001. I
started my Linux journey with Debian GNU/Linux. From there I went on to use
Fedora Core (fc1, fc2, fc3, fc4), Mandrake Linux (now Mandriva), MEPIS,
Ubuntu, CentOS and am currently using Fedora 13. Fedora seems to be the best
distro for me due to its sane defaults and its outstanding community.

[Design-team] Tutorial ideas for the new fp.o site

2010-07-16 Thread Ian MacGregor
I'm happy, no excited to be a part of the new fp.o website and have come up
with some ideas for tutorials:

* Agave tutorial - creating color schemes with agave
* Crontab tutorial - creating a cronjob
* Desktop launcher tutorial - creating a desktop launcher
* GIMP tutorial - creating custom desktop wallpapers
* Gnote tutorial - using the gnote app

I can write most of these as I use all of these apps, and I have taught a
class on crontab recently. I'm submitting these for feedback. What does
everyone think?

Excellent advice all around! I'll replace the crontab tutorial with the
cheese idea and drop the desktop launcher idea.

The folks I've already met on the project have lots of energy, I can already
see that this is going to be fun!
