Good idea Alexander -- I believe that Inkscape is capable of this
since it can run in a batch or headless mode (no GUI display) to do
 PNG exports.

 Paul

For creating this banner i used simple script [1] for batch converting to
png files and packaging in tar.gz. This has saved a lot of time.
Most of the time took communicating with the translator. Subject associating
with translation of the text banner contained about 120 messages.
In the future it would be great to integrating text input with a standard
translation software (pot / po files).

I created romanian variants banner (based on Nicu's comment).
You see it here -

Once I had a script in python that add text to images.
 Maybe if it was useful.

For future releases could be considered a great automate the creation of
banners (now I have created over 1200 png files for more than 30 languages).

Thanks,

I don't see the funny part... I am not a translator and I don't use
translated software myself, I contribute to translations only
occasionally. For the last few releases Alexandu Szasz did the countdown
translation (he's maintaining the Fedora translation), probably he was
busy or just not aware, but I am sure you can do it yourself, since
there are just a couple o strings.

Actually I like this one better, probably due to its more vibrant
colors. However, compared with Alpha I feel the trails edges are a bit
to strong, they should be blurred a bit (as they were in Alpha).

Also, I know we wanted to avoid a possible clash with the Debian swirl
logo, but from a composition point of view the counter-clockwise trails
work better: your attention enters the composition normally from the
left and is lead gently by the trails to the point of interest. With the
new composition it clashes: my attention is taken from the bottom-left
and driven into an edge at the top, then a very short trail from right
to the point of interest.

Let's go back to the Alpha composition and live with the possible Debian
resemblance (which really isn't).

Hi!

I might be the only one but I think this wallpaper was always very
different from Debian's artwork. I for sure never even thought
Debian before people mentioned it on the blog. I wouldn't be too
worried about it appearing as a copy of anything Debian, it's a far
stretch. People *could* construe it that way, but you can construe
almost anything given enough free time...

We are on the same page, I also didn't make any Debian connection until
I saw some others mentioning it, but you know, people can see everything

Now I am pretty much convinced the original counter-clockwise swirl is
the best, but wasn't able to realize the composition problem with a
clockwise swirl until I saw the picture.

The reason I spun it the otherway is because the new F13 spinner spins
clockwise. When you see the spinner spinning clockwise yet the wallpaper
spins counter-clockwise it looks pretty off :(

Folks, can you come up with any way to do the clockwise swirl but have
things look less awkward? What is the swirl was along the bottom right

Please don't! KDE themes are designed with swirl in right ;-) And some desktop

You are right, the point of interest must be on the right part of the

the one in Alpha (Rocket Trails 2) flipped vertically.

Yes, I think the right side is still the proper placement because of
desktop icon positioning.

Some thoughts I had, although I'm not sure to what extent these agree
with the critiques already received:

* I'd definitely like to see quite a bit of blur on the swirls. Right
now the swirls really attract my eyes away from where I want to put
them on the desktop, especially when I'm locating icons. The
transition from the pattern-based background to the swirl seems very
abrupt and less like natural lighting or smoke.

* The tail ends of the swirls near the top and bottom right similarly
seem to abruptly stop. I think that the intent is that these are
covered up by other swirls, but the contrast between them may
change the way the design's perceived -- at least it does for me.

Nicu, were you going to try to do a new iteration of the wallpaper

It still needs a lot of work, but I made a bit of a start on this. I
think the most tricky thing to adjust was to redo the swirls so they
were clockwise to fit the new loading animated cursor. I also tried a
different texture but it doesn't have quite the same effect - the one
used in the alpha wallpaper is too repetitive a pattern unfortunately. I
think the texturing needs work. Also the glows are totally off. I did
too sloppy a job of it.

That being said, here's a couple variations on the new swirls:

http://fedorapeople.org/groups/designteam/Resources/Fedora%20Release%
20Themes/F13/Beta/day.png

http://fedorapeople.org/groups/designteam/Resources/Fedora%20Release%
20Themes/F13/Beta/night.png

The new swirl shapes are in here:

http://fedorapeople.org/groups/designteam/Resources/Fedora%20Release%
20Themes/F13/Beta/30Mar2010-skytrails.svg

And the new XCF file is here:

http://fedorapeople.org/groups/designteam/Resources/Fedora%20Release%
20Themes/F13/Beta/skytrails14.xcf

Note the texture I used is the JPG in that directory. It's a photo I
shot.

I should like to add that the Alpha wallpaper is awesome albeit rather
lowish resolution and is missing dual screen versions... Even if we were
to go with this version (which would be perfectly fine at least with me,
I'm already using it and I like it very much) we'd need to address these
issues. IIRC, the standard in past releases were 2048x1536, 1920x1200,
1280x1024 and their dual screen counterparts.

I'm ready to do the packaging work as soon as I have the necessary
sources (just one source for all sizes is fine, I can do the
cropping/resizing as needed).

Thanks,

If we want to take another stab at the wallpaper for post-Beta/GA, I
know that Mairin Duffy had collected some constructive critiques:

* Is there someone who would be willing to make the required

  /usr/share/firstboot/themes/fedora-constantine/

I remember seeing some Planet Fedora entries concerning the wallpaper
and soliciting feedback. Is there a need to sort out that feedback
and figure out what's actionable and applicable to the wallpaper
 theme?

I think the feedback can be summed like this: the swirls look a bit too
Debian-like and they are a bit to white and contrasting with the rest of
the image. Also, the stars are a bit too strong and too many.

Tue 23-Mar Tue 06-Apr Create Count Down Graphic
Wed 31-Mar Fri 02-Apr Create Beta Website Banner
Wed 31-Mar Wed 31-Mar Package: Beta Walpaper
Thu 01-Apr Thu 01-Apr Beta Project Wide Release Readiness Meeting
Tue 06-Apr Tue 06-Apr Beta Release Public Availability
Tue 06-Apr Tue 20-Apr Create DVD/CD label and sleeve artwork

So I'm obviously not an artist or able to make any of this material.
But is there anything I can do to help ensure it *does* get made by
 the team?

The easiest way to address the Beta banner is to build upon the one used
for Alpha and improve it slightly (to mark an evolution from Alpha to Beta).

The count down graphic can be based on those banners or not, but it has
the same image size.

Would it be helpful to file these as tickets and then get them
assigned to some of the designers on the team?

Unfortunately my next few days are busy, I work on some materials

and figure out what's actionable and applicable to the wallpaper
  theme?

I think the feedback can be summed like this: the swirls look a bit too
Debian-like and they are a bit to white and contrasting with the rest of
the image. Also, the stars are a bit too strong and too many.

+1. But the overall idea is very nice.

Tue 23-Mar Tue 06-Apr Create Count Down Graphic
Wed 31-Mar Fri 02-Apr Create Beta Website Banner
Wed 31-Mar Wed 31-Mar Package: Beta Walpaper

Tue 06-Apr Tue 06-Apr Beta Release Public Availability
Tue 06-Apr Tue 20-Apr Create DVD/CD label and sleeve artwork

So I'm obviously not an artist or able to make any of this material.
But is there anything I can do to help ensure it *does* get made by
  the team?

The easiest way to address the Beta banner is to build upon the one used
for Alpha and improve it slightly (to mark an evolution from Alpha to
 Beta).

The count down graphic can be based on those banners or not, but it has
 the same image size.

Would it be helpful to file these as tickets and then get them
assigned to some of the designers on the team?

Unfortunately my next few days are busy, I work on some materials
(graphics, photos, video and web) for Document Freedom Day, so I don't
think I can contribute this week with other things besides advice.

The large banners typically look like this:

Unite.

Reign.

Some things to note about the specs here:

- no text, just 'fedora' (or just the logo mark or 'f') and the version
number - we don't want to have to translate it

- they usually have at least one screenshot

- It should somehow be related to the release slogan - for F13 this is
Rock it.

- they're typically 600x200 pixels, with rounded corners.

What do you think?

Ooo, splash screens. So my bet is that to make these ready, we

It would be wonderful to see, after the wallpaper gets updated however
the team sees fit, a bunch of people helping to prepare the graphics,
banners, and media art over the next couple of weeks. That way we
have everything lined up to go for the F13 Beta launch, and for the
people who are going to give their time to get media produced all over

You should assume the answer to this is Yes! :-) Stop by
#fedora-design on IRC and check in with the artists to find out what
needs to be done here. At the very least they can point you to the
technical specifications for the banners and explain what needs to be
done.

I'd like to suggest that, since we have one week left for the design
phase, that the Design team leaders do the following:

 * Collect (or have collected) the current submissions on a wiki page for
 review.

 * Use the week of Feb 1-7 to make some decisions about what design to
 pursue for the Alpha wallpaper.

 * Use the week of Feb 8-15 to solicit and prepare the candidate
 wallpaper for the Alpha release.

Does everyone agree with this approach and methodology? This question
has been raised a few times I don't recall seeing the final answer.

I don't think that image has a Free license, so we can't put it on the
