Question: if someone designed a fabulous fedora wallpaper, what are the
possibilities of it becoming the new default wallpaper...? :)

Hi Nicole!

On Thu, 2012-04-12 at 07:31 +1000, Nicole Harris wrote:
My name is Nicole Harris - I'm a web designer based in Melbourne,

It's a pleasure to meet you; I'm so excited to see your interest in our
team!

I'd love to get involved - I'm specifically interested in learning
more about UX design and participating in these types of projects.

 Some examples of my work:

www.roi.com.au (this is my workplace - i redesigned their website last
year, since then someone else has taken over the project, but my
initial design is still *pretty much* there)
 www.sanremoballroom.com.au
www.janetwolf.com.au (one of my really early designs...)

Very impressive portfolio! Fantastic visual design on all of these.

By day I now focus on conversion based solutions for online marketing
campaigns - this involves a/b and multivariate split testing.

By night I am designing a couple of web apps (too early to show you
any examples...!) with my partner who is a web developer.

 skills:
 Gimp, Inkscape
 HTML, CSS, Wordpress, Joomla
 Jquery (beginner)

Looking forward to getting my hands dirty!

Awesome! I'm so glad to see you have so much open source tool
experience :)

Our normal process for joining the team is that we ask new recruits to
take on a minor ticket in our tracking system as sort of
practical/applied introduction to how the Fedora community works. You
end up making connections and learning the Fedora infrastructure through
that which powers you to taking on bigger projects.

I don't know if the design ticket has been filed yet, but the Fedora
infrastructure team (#fedora-admin on irc.freenode.net) yesterday was
talking about needing a Fedora skin for a stickynotes web app they're
looking to deploy. A test instance of it is available at:

http://dcr226.co.uk/paste/sticky-notes

We'd want, at a minimum, for the design/template to match our newer
Fedora infrastructure templates such as for Fedora packages (I did the
skin for this one):

https://community.dev.fedoraproject.org/packages/inkscape

Or Koji, our build system (Ryan Lerch, who is also based in Australia at
the moment, did the skin for this):

http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/

Let me know if this seems like an intro project you'd like to take on.
Alternatively we could find something more UX-centric for you to take on
since you have strong interest and ability in UX stuff. We do have a few
pending usability assessments and mockup requests in the ticket system.
Our list of open tickets is here:

https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/report/1?asc=1page=1

Anyway, I don't want to overload you with information; if the
sticky-notes project looks interesting let me know and I can get a
ticket for it assigned to you, otherwise let's chat more about potential
UX projects?

Hello, Design Team,

My name's Sarah. I'm rather new to fedora but have used Linux for 14
years. I met Mo (hi Mo!) earlier this month at FudCon Blacksburg. She
taught me some awesome Inkscape tips and got me really interested in
the interaction/usability process.

Experience: I know my way around Inkscape and gimp and have created
everything from basic data graphs and buttons to T-shirt designs that
combine photographs and vector elements. I'm also good at taking
written requirements/heavy technical documentation, breaking the
content down into language that is accessible to beginners, and then
creating graphics, choosing imagery and writing new content that can
be used for tutorials, presentations, websites, etc. I also know
CSS(3), HTML(5), and a little javascript.

I'd love to learn more/help out with the interface/interaction process
as well as continue to expand my graphics skills. I've checked out
the open tickets and see some that nobody owns, but I'd also be
completely open to someone grabbing me to help them on their task.

I'm interested in all forms of graphics, and have a couple reasons for

create artwork as well or be a source of ideas that others can improve.
I've also had ideas that concerned the Fedora Insight project, but I

wanting to join the design team. I've always admired the artwork that
has been put out by Fedora, and hope I can have a relationship with the
team. I get to improve myself based on the art of others, and I can
create artwork as well or be a source of ideas that others can improve.
I've also had ideas that concerned the Fedora Insight project, but I
lost touch with what's going on in that area (this might help Máirín
 remember who I am :P).

That's about it, really. If you have any questions, please feel free to
email me. Also, if you would like to see some examples of my work (if I
can find them ;), also send me an email. I don't feel comfortable
clogging the mailing list with my attachments just yet. :)

2010-08-16 Thread Federico Cáceres
Hi Máirín,

2010/8/16 Máirín Duffy du...@fedoraproject.org:
So I've been using the last one (I'll call it 'C') for the past week.
After using it for this period of time I do have some suggestions:
Thanks for test-driving it!

 - It seems that the blue in the image doesn't quite work with the blue
in our default icon theme, Mist. I've attached the folder icon from hat
theme so you can see what shades and hues of blue it needs to work with.
I think the wallpaper is a bit too far towards the purple end of the
 spectrum.
Yeah, I didn't use the Fedora blue color, sorry about that, will be
fixing this asap and testing with the default color theme.

 - I do get a bit of a dizzy feeling looking at it. I wonder though, if
adding a slight vignette (like in [1] but dark rather than white) to a
very dark desaturated blue to the left side would help?
I will try adding that vignette or some similar thing to the left to
flatten the image a bit. And maybe reducing the blur a bit can also
help with the dizzyness.

Does anyone else have any feedback for Federico? Has anyone else been
using his iterations or developing their own? Time is definitely getting
short as we need to start working on the banners for beta. :)

Federico, can you make our meeting tomorrow? It'll be at 19:00 UTC (3 PM
Eastern US time) in #fedora-design on irc.freenode.net. Let me know if
you can make it and need help connecting.
I think I will be able to make it to the meeting, I will be connected
from freenode's webclient though, hope that's not a problem.

See you there!
Federico.

it's time I gave back to the community.  I cut my teeth on the Gimp many
years ago when I switched to Linux (after Windows slowly killed my laptop).
I am a very skilled photo/image editor and have recently learned how to use
that other Adobe program as well.  I am familiar with Inkscape, but not to
the same degree (something I'm working on right now :).  I have some design
experience including button designs, web graphics and logo creation.  My
programming skills are very rudimentary; I am proficient in HTML (though I am
still in the process of wrapping my head around CSS) and I have a very basic
 understanding of Java.
Anyways, all that is to say that I'm very excited to contribute in any
way.  I know I can handle some of the “Quick Easy” projects in the Design
Service Queue, but I admit I'm mostly here to absorb what I can of this
groups general knowledge and hopefully become a better contributor further
 down the road.

 Pleased to meet you,

Hi and nice to see you here,

My name is Fabian Scherschel (call me Fab, that's easier for everyone)

I stumbled into FUDCon 2009 kind of by accident and full time since
F12 came out. I have been using Linux since about 2005 and full time
since summer 2007. In all that time I've tried to contribute as best I
can with limited coding knowledge, mostly triaging and reporting bugs
and such. I've been meaning for ages to apply the other skill set I
have, ie. designing things, to the community as well and I've signed
up here to finally do that. I can draw passably by hand and usually
use the GIMP and whenever possible Inkscape to design stuff. I am
pretty good at drawing things (especially abstract stuff like logos),
people and animals aren't my strong suit.

That's cool, we get a large range of requests, including logos, icons,
buttons and banners:
https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/report/1

As for some samples, I need to get that section of my site back up but
if you have a look at the artwork for the Linux Outlaws podcast -
http://linuxoutlaws.com - I've done all that. I have also designed the
Hull LUG logo - http://hulllug.org - and had a design in the
Manchester Free Software logo competition which unfortunately lost:
 http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Manchester/Logo_Competition#Logo_Number:_.231
   http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Manchester/Logo_Competition#Logo_Number:_.232
I also do all the design work for OggCamp - http://oggcamp.org There's
probably more stuff but I can't remember now, I always design things.
Any questions? Feel free to ask. :)

It looks like you know what are you doing and are able become a valuable
contributor. Do not be afraid to jump in in any ongoing task we are
working on here on the list. Also, if you have original ideas, please go
forward and show/talk about them.

P.S.: If you want to see what I'm up to and talk to me more real-time,
 I'm on Identica as @fabsh.

And you can also find us on IRC on #fedora-design, a channel about

Welcome to the team!

We have a set of instructions here (we're called the Design Team now, we
need to update the page) that discusses first steps for joining the
Design Team:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork#How_to_Join

Have you created a Fedora account and signed the CLA yet? If not, please
do so, it's really important.

Then you can check our task queue to see what works need to be done!

https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/report/1

You can log into our queue using your Fedora account and claim a ticket.
Just make sure someone else hasn't already claimed it. If it looks like
it's claimed, but you're interested in it and there isn't any recent

the work list. it there a idea list? and where can I find it?

What we have is http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/DesignService, here
anyone having an idea can leave a request, maybe someone will pick it up.
We are also thinking if a proper tracker will help with this, still under
 evaluation.

i'll see it coming when it does ;-).

Wow! I *love* some of them! Which applications are you using to make
them? (something available in Fedora by any chance?)

I'm mostly using adobe photoshop and illustrator. I don't think that adobe
made their software for fedora. I do know that there is a workaround/hack
that makes linux act like windows and let's the windows versions of the
software be installed. but I do not know the results and I have no idea if
there is a simular convertor avaliable for fedora.

 Hello guys!

 Design suggestions are welcome!

 == Fedora Brasil Magazine - 5th Edition ===

It?s an absolute pleasure for Projeto Fedora Brasil (Brazilian Fedora
Project) to announce that the 5th edition of our magazine is available
 for download.
In this number, we?ve made a special approach to Office Suite
BrOffice.org and have been presented with a special editorial written by
Gustavo Pacheco, charter member of BrOffice.org. We would also like to
introduce the series BrOffice.org for advanced users. For those who want
to know all its potential, it?s time to start your collection.
As usual, we?ve chosen a very interesting game: Secret Maryo Chronicles
is a pretty special remake of a classic game that everyone knows, it
will certainly please even the most demanding players.
Neither GNOME nor KDE, we invite you to know Enlightenment, which
promises to turn your desktop into a work of art, and we also talked to
Professor Gregory Kriehn, of the Engineering Department, at California
State University ? and the father of the repository of Enlightenment for
 Fedora.
Igor Soares analyses, in a clarifying way, the complex situation of
closed drivers in the Linux world, the lessons on Shell Script have
finally moved from the introductory phase, and now the person in charge
 is Fabiano Caixeta Duarte.
Is anything missing? How about our first comic strips?

They can be run with various degrees of success in Wine, which is
available in Fedora. Have you tried any of the Free graphic applications
available in Fedora, like Gimp or Inkscape?
