[Bug 24999] repeated printer drivers on HPLIP

2006-01-17 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/24999

Comment:
repeated printer drivers on HPLIP - good solution for this would be
patching gnome-cups-manager to use *original* linux printer drivers
database - foomatic-db instead of PPD files, generated from foomatic-db.
Some printer configuration utilities, like Foomatic-GUI, already uses
foomatic-db.

A quick search gives this at the top of google...
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-vfs-list/2003-February/msg00024.html

... the net seems littered with archived emails about FAMOpen() failed

This is a brand new install on my old Compaq EvoN150, which runs great

[Bug 28607] Sticky focus for terminal windows is annoying

2006-01-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28607

Comment:
This upload fixes the bug:

 metacity (1:2.13.21-0ubuntu1) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream version:
 - Fix Solaris compilation issues
 - Merge compositor work from branches to get the beginnings of an openGL
based compositor. Still not ready and thus disabled by default.
 - Composite fixes: Only update composite on damage events, get
non-composite compilation working again , Really turn off draw-in-a-loop
 - Don't dereference a NULL string
 - GCC 2.95 fix; remove more C99 style variable initiailizations
 - Fix accidental overzealous focus holding by the terminal (introduced in
last release) so that windows launched from panel icons, the panel
menu, or global keybindings should get focus now. (Ubuntu: #28607)
 - If no valid window is found in the MRU list, then set focus to the
   desktop window.

You can argue with upstream on the command line case, they describe it as a
feature

   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
If I right click a removable device in computer:// there is an Unmount
Volume option. There's two issues with this:

1) Unmount is a technical term users can not be anticipated to know
what means. Remove safely or something would probably be better.

2) It is not easily discoverable. This is bad for two reasons:
2.1 - People does not necesarily know that a usb-stick should be
properly unmounted to ensure filesystem entegrity.
2.2 - It is not possible to just eject a CD by pushing the eject button
on the drive.

I think the best solution for 2) is to add an Eject/Remove Safely icon
in the notification area, popping up a eject/remove safely dialog when
clicked.

[Bug 28640] GTK2 apps crash when browsing a directory with UTF8 filenames

2006-01-17 Thread Billy Kwong
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28640

Comment:
Ok, did more poking around, it seems that the problem is not in glib,
but in libc6.

As I went into the directory in question in bash, ls did not seem to
have the problem. But once I attempt to use command line completion on
one particular directory with an UTF8 encoded name, blammo.

The following is a backtrace from bash (using libc6-dbg):

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[Bug 28798] new logout dialog interface issues

2006-01-17 Thread Sean Middleditch
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28798

Comment:
One more minor issue I forgot to mention: the sleep and hibernate icons
are the exact same thing with different colors. There are many types of
color blindness, and I'm not sure if any of them would come into effect
with this dialog, but I suspect it's likely. Furthermore, the human
mind is more efficient at recognizing shapes than colors, so it would be
more useful to have two icons with different shapes but the same colors
rather than same colors and different shapes. (Being both different
shapes and color is best, of course.)

The power off icon is also a little too similar, in my opinion. The
icons also rather don't make sense. Power off isn't using the
international sign for power, but sleep is? The reboot icon also looks
like the refresh icon in a browser. I don't know if that's intentional
or not (I can see the analogy), but it may not be the best icon to use
given the differences between refreshing a single web page and rebooting
the entire machine.

[Bug 28835] Unmount in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2006-01-17 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28835

Comment:
An icon in the notification area will solve both 2.2 and 2.1, I think.

I think an icon (with corresponding dialog) per media would be best, but
then again it is just a detail.

[Bug 28640] libc6 crash on certain UTF8 encoded filename

2006-01-17 Thread Billy Kwong
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28640

Comment:
The filename in question is LOVE 05
\u\203\205\u\u\214\u\233\206, as shown in the backtrace
of bash.

I was able to reproduce the bug in beep-media-player by entering the
directory with that filename inside the directory inside a GTK2 file
dialog box. In the case of nautilus, simply entering that directory with
the filename in question inside would be sufficient to crash nautilus.

With bash, if I attempt to do a command line completion on the filename
e.g. typing LOVEtab would crash bash. Interesting thing is that ls
is able to list the contents of the directory fine.

[Bug 28839] gnome-keyboard-properties should have an easy to switch gtk2 input methods

2006-01-17 Thread David Mandelberg
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28839

Affects: control-center (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Currently there is no easy way for the user to choose a default gtk2
input method, the current method is to edit a profile/bash.rc/xinit file
and add an environment variable which is not vary user friendly. The
most obvious (to me) place to allow the user to select a default input
method is the keyboard properties capplet.

[Bug 28840] rhythmbox dies when trying to play to USB soundcard

2006-01-17 Thread Simon Watson
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28840

Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I am running Ubuntu Dapper on a Dell D600 laptop. When playing audio to
the onboard card, rhythmbox works as intend - and rather well!

However - when I plug in the USB soundcard, which is detected fine by
ALSA, and set the sound preferences to use the Sound Blaster MP3+ device
- rhythmbox bombs when playing sounds. It comes up with an internal data
flow error.

Thanks for tracking that. We have some crashes with a such backtrace and
I was suspecting glib or the libc. Could you provide an example to get
that crash? Maybe a tar of a the directory with the issue or just the
specific filename doing that? To reassign a package click on the line
about the bug in the table of the top of the page, you get the settings
page where you can change the source package

[Bug 21693] gnome-about-me crashes on close window

2006-01-17 Thread PhonseWalsh
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/21693

Comment:
I can confirm this as well. I am running Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy kernel -
2.6.12-10-k7. It seems the problem occurs after starting About Me and
selecting two tabs in a row then closing with the 'x' as opposed to the
actual close button. I noticed more of a failure rate when choosing the
Address tab first, then selecting either Personal Info or going back to
Contact then closing. Using the close button has not generated this
error.

My error output is as follows

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Desktop$ gnome-about-me

(gnome-about-me:17739): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_ascii_strcasecmp: assertion `s2 !=

[Bug 28835] Unmount in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2006-01-17 Thread Christoph Wolk
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28835

Comment:
I'm not sure the notification icon is a good idea. Some removable devices, like
cds or external harddrives, may be mounted for a long time, having them in the
notification area seems to clutter the notification area with little gain. The
HIG states that the usefulness of the notification area rapidly decreases if
more than four items are there (Section 2.4), I can see this taking one or two
items all the time for a not too small number of users.
On the other hand, it's clear that many users don't know that usb devices have
to be unmounted so there's no data loss, and some education here would be a
good idea though. But do these users really click on unknown items in their
notification area? And having a notification bubble (like the update manager)
everytime you put in a new cd might become annyoing very fast.

Fully agree on the first point, Unmount is not a particularly clear
wording for this.
