[Bug 28958] Alt+F2 "Run Dialog" box appears and hides behind

2006-01-18 Thread DerekBuranen
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28958

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When you hit alt+f2, with the new gnome-panel as of today 1/18, the
dialog appears and quickly hides behind a window leaving your prior open
window available.

A quick alt+tab will bring it back as it just loses focus right away for
some odd reason.

It should stay on top of the app open when the hotkey is pressed.

[Bug 28956] Context menu for URLs is racy

2006-01-18 Thread Andrew Bennetts
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28956

Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Right-clicking on a URL in a terminal, but accidentally moving the mouse
cursor off the URL before the context menu renders (it's easier than it
sounds, at least on my hardware) produces a different context menu than
if the cursor stays put. Specifically, the "Open Link" and "Copy Link
Address" options are missing.

[Bug 28949] failed recording sound after gstreamer0.8-plugin is installed

2006-01-18 Thread Shu Hung \(Koala\)
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28949

Affects: gnome-media (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I have verified this by installed my laptop twice. It is very sure that
sound recording fails sound after the package "gstreamer0.8-plugin" is
installed.

I have a Sony VAIO notebook (should be PCG—R505TS, I'll update the model
number). I fresh install Ubuntu and test the sound recording function by
"gnome-recorder" and gnome's recording volume display. They works at
this moment.

I then install "gstreamer0.8-plugin" with synaptic. Just after that, the
sound recording function fails. "gnome-recorder" fails and gnome's
recording volume display nothing as I shout to the mic. I may however
raise up the volume of mic in gnome's "Volume Control" that I can hear
my shout in the speaker, while I still cannot record my sound.

[Bug 28798] new logout dialog interface issues

2006-01-18 Thread Sean Middleditch
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28798

Comment:
Hmm, ok. When you put your desktop to sleep, is it while keeping a
session open or only at a login screen? Is this something that could
perhaps be made part of the screensaver? (Option: put computer to sleep
after X minutes of inactivity.)

So far as hibernate... what does it do? I really have no clue what it
does. I'm guessing it's like sleep, but... more so? Is sleep like low-
power mode but hibernate is where the computer shuts off entirely but
saves its state? Can't we overload the power button on most
laptops/desktops to mean "hibernate" or "sleep" instead of "power off"?
What about computers that don't even support hibernate or sleep? (Or is
that guaranteed to work on every machine, even old ones?)

(I also notice that the new GNOME dialogs use "Suspend" instead of
"Sleep" - might be a good idea to make sure you use the same terminology
everywhere, between g-p-m, gnome-session, and your new dialog.)

For the main dialog, since you say it'll be back, I guess I don't have
much more to say. Some of those more minor tweaks I originally
suggested could really make a difference, though.

[Bug 27913] [Dapper] changing background colour doesn't take effect

2006-01-18 Thread Manu Cornet
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/27913

Comment:
I believe this setting is only useful for plain gdm themes (not
graphical themes occupying the whole screen), and does not have any
effect on the graphical theme itself, if I understand correctly (you
might notice that the color that appears just before the greeter comes
on changes, though).

Sébastien, should we just close this bug, or try to hide this setting
when "graphical theme" is used ?

[Bug 28939] logout applet is a not-so-good idea

2006-01-18 Thread Étienne Bersac
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28939

Comment:
Hello,

Manu, you're right about the "random click". But where is the logout
button on Windows® ? in the "start menu" ! Where is it on Mac OS X ? on
the "Apple Menu" ! So is it really disturbing to have a logout button in
the "System menu" ?

Logout button is as easy as ever to find on ubuntu. Once the user found
it, it's done. Really, finding the logout button is not a problem.

> so it's not really questionnable :)

* I'm not sure that the user being surprised when clicking on a wrong

menu but in facts clicks on the launcher right next to it, he'll be
surprised as well, but there's nothing we can do about this :)

I really miss the applet from the default GNOME configuration
(Screenshot: http://primates.ximian.com/~federico/misc/default-

The applet shows all the available programs, in all workspaces. It's
really convinient to have it in in the corner, accessable with fits law.
I use this all the time, and I can't see why Ubuntu differs from GNOME
here.

When I dont have the applet available, I always have to brose through
all the workspaces looking for a specific program.

Comment:
I have an ATI card (Radeon 9200se) and I am happily using the open
source xserver-xorg-driver-ati driver on Dapper.

I am experiencing similar issues: the GL hacks are fine when run from
xscreensaver or by themselves, while they flicker terribly when run by
gnome-screensaver. Non-GL hacks show no issues.

[Bug 28939] logout applet is a not-so-good idea

2006-01-18 Thread Étienne Bersac
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28939

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Hello,

With flight3 comes a new config of the gnome panel. As this is a good
idea to remove the "help" button which is easily available with "System
> help", I think this is a bad idea to add the "logout" button which
easily available with "System > Logout" or event with power button (on
iMac G3, iBook G4 and somes PC keyboards).

Laptop users usualy just close the screen, so this is not a feature use
by everyone.

Another problem : if the user click by mistake to this applet instead of
date-applet, he'll be surprise to see the logout dialog.

And last but not least, it is really ugly. I talk with some friend and
this seems not to be a attended feature or even a "not so good" idea.

A good replacement will be the "fast-user-switch-applet" with an option
at the end of the menu to logout.

Thanks.

[Bug 28798] new logout dialog interface issues

2006-01-18 Thread Manu Cornet
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28798

Comment:
I agree that entering sleep mode should happen when you just close the
lid of a laptop, and that you don't need a dialog for that. But 1) If
your computer is a desktop and you still want to let it sleep (I do this
very often with my Powermac when I don't use it), there's no other
option than just choose Sleep from the menu (same in OS X). 2) We
provide another function, Hibernate, and Mac OS X doesn't have it AFAIK,
so we need a way to let people use it. Since Sleep and Hibernate have
different effects, and I believe a lot of users will use/need/like both
of them, but not in the same situations, I guess they should appear in
the menu ? Your laptop should sleep when its lid is closed, but what can
you do to let it "Hibernate", apart from using the menu ?

But you're right that the difference between the two is clearly not
obvious. And an icon cannot replace a clear explanation. That's why I
used tooltips in my previous dialog, as you can see right here :

http://www.manucornet.net/ubuntu/JPEG/Logout_dialog_tooltips.png

(the hibernate tooltips clearly explains that the computer won't be
needing or using any power during hibernation). I wrote those sentences,
but I'm sure someone else (a native English speaker ^^) will find a
better wording. I don't know whether just explaining what it does in the
tooltips is enough, but I can't find a better way right now.

About the new dialogs, actually they're not mine, they come from
upstream ;-) Vincent Untz is the one to thank for them. In Ubuntu we'll
make it slightly different, for now :

* The two menu entries (Shut Down and Log Out) will remain pretty much
the same as now, but maybe with icons in the dialog buttons (I'll try
and tweak that, soon).

* The applet that will be added in the upper right corner of the screen
will bring the "complete" dialog (the one I designed, although there's
still some work to do with it), with all 6 options.

Again, this will probably be temporary, so that we can see how people
like it and have a little time to see what to do.

Thank you again for your feedback ! These are not obvious problems and
we definitely need some brainstorming to get it right :)

[Bug 28798] new logout dialog interface issues

2006-01-18 Thread Sean Middleditch
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28798

Comment:
If I had concise ideas on replacements, I'd have given them straight
off. :-) Does KDE use icons for this stuff, and if so, what do their
icons look like?

So far as distinguishing sleep and hibernate... I as a user (and a very
technically advanced one at that) really have no freakin' clue what the
difference is between the two, so it's hard to say. I really don't
think there *should* be icons for both, as I said in the original
report; most users don't know the difference and both of them should
probably be hardware initiated (closing the laptop lid) versus a menu.
If I had to go to some menu to put my iBook to sleep I'd never even
bother doing it.

What exactly is the use case for having sleep/hibernate in the logout
dialog? Is there some class of users that actually needs this? Is it
necessary only because some other part of the system (gnome-power-
manager, for example) isn't doing its job right?

Looking right now I see there are new dialogs in place after today's
apt-get upgrade. Are these your new replacements? I like them. I do
have two comments on them:

First, I don't think dialog titles are supposed to be questions,
according to the HIG. I can't really think of a good title for either
dialog, though... maybe asking for suggestions on the GNOME lists (as
these look like good inclusions for being upstreamed) would help.

Second, these dialogs are confirmation alerts. All alert dialogs are
supposed to be modal in relation to their application. In the case of
session management dialogs, the "application" is the whole desktop. The
real problem being that they don't have window titles and don't appear
in the window list, but they can under up behind/under other application
windows, making them impossible to find without closing/hiding other
application windows. I don't know if modal is correct, but at least
ensuring that they stay on top of all other windows would be a good
improvement.

Thanks for being awesome and working on this stuff, Manu!

Using gnome-screensaver 2.13.5, I lock the screen, type a wrong

waits few seconds. So far, so good.

After this, the dialog starts moving/shaking/rocking/flickering for
almost a second, then it becomes "calm" again and shows the password
incorrect message.

I observed the same flicker on two different machines, using different
video drivers, so I guess this is not a system-dependent problem.

[Bug 28928] SQRT function not working

2006-01-18 Thread Jeroen van der Vegt
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28928

Affects: gcalctool (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I can't make gcalctool compute any square-root. E.g. to compute sqrt(9) I do
this:
1. start gcalctool
2. switch to 'advanced view'.
3. click on the button with the sqrt-symbol.
4. click on the button with the nine.
5. click on the button with the closing bracket.
6. click on the button with the '='.

The display is not updated, and the status bar says 'malformed
expression'. Googleing for this
(http://www.google.com/search?q=gcalctool%20sqrt) turns up similar
bugreports in Debian and Ubuntu, but I can't find the latter anymore.
Those reports suggest the LC_ALL environment variable is related, but I
can't find any relation: sqrt never works, regardless of the LC_ALL (or
any LC/LANG variable) value.

[Bug 28917] gnome-panel and applets crash

Public bug report changed:

I have this here as well (choosing "Log Out" OR the new "Shut Down" menu

such as "Crash when logging out or shutting down from system menu" ?

I recompiled gnome-panel to get the bt, here it is, for example when
choosing "Shut Down" :

[Bug 28920] Automount of 2 cdroms broken

2006-01-18 Thread ebold
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28920

Affects: gnome-desktop (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Hy,

On Ubuntu 5.10 with the latest updates I have 2 cdrom drives.

If I insert 2 cds at the same time the following things happen:

- 2 file browser windows pop-up for "cdrom0"
- in the tree view I see the different titles of the 2 cdroms _but_ when I
click on them I always see the contents of cdrom0 (ie. the files of cdrom1 are
hidden by cdrom0 but not title).

- after I eject one or the other of the cds I have proper access to the
files.

Normally I should be able to view both cds in the same time.

[Bug 28915] [Dapper] 'Configure alarms' selections not remembered

2006-01-18 Thread Chris Lee
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28915

Affects: evolution-data-server (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When I right-click on the EDS icon in the notification area, and select
'configure alarms', a pop-up window presents my calendars, from which I
can select ones via check-boxes.

If I select any subset of calendars and press close, then open the pop-
up again, *no* calendars are selected in the new pop-up.

[Bug 25889] Program freeze on selecting directory using gnome file chooser

2006-01-18 Thread Daniel Holbach
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/25889

Comment:
I would re-dub the bug report to an Anjuta bug. The meld issue is
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/meld/+bug/2558 which was
fixed in Dapper already. And Anjuta doesn't use the standard gtk file
selector.

[Bug 28621] cannot associate file type with open command

2006-01-18 Thread gratefulfrog
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28621

Comment:
Thanks for considering this "minor" bug!

The association does not appear in the properties tab, nor does it
appear in the context menu, which only proposes "Open with", from which
I can choose an application.

Cheers!

[Bug 22063] No way to pop up a password dialog

2006-01-18 Thread Danilo Piazzalunga
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/22063

Comment:
As of version 2.13.5-0ubuntu2, gnome-screensaver-command --poke does the
correct thing and pops up the password dialog.

Still, --deactivade unlocks the screen, but that would be a different
bug (if it is a bug).
