[Bug 29835] Workspace Switcher: Editable entries not obvious

2006-01-27 Thread tenshu
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29835

Comment:
hum
is that so important?
I always think that renaming workspaces is quite useless.
Moreover it is not really in the Keep It Super Simple point of view of gnome
dev.

I think you can confirm this put it status to Wishlist and assign it to
ubuntu-desktop team.
But i think i will be rejected

[Bug 29835] Workspace Switcher: Editable entries not obvious

2006-01-27 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29835

Task: ubuntu gnome-desktop
Sourcepackagename: gnome-desktop = gnome-panel
   Severity: Normal = Minor
Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs
 Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed

Comment:
I can't really see why it needs two single-clicks. AFAIK, the only thing you
can do with those entries is edit them, so they should really be editable on
the first click. Unless its a matter of preventing the user from editing them
by mistake?

Set this to minor, as it's a usability bug.

Could you provide some more information, please? Take a look at the following

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash

Before you try that, you might like to try running gaim from the terminal. When
it crashes, it might output some useful error text on the terminal, which you
can copy into this bug.

It seems that select lookup WORD in dictionary make the dictionary

[Bug 22007] no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2006-01-27 Thread François
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/22007

Comment:
Ubuntu's philosophy is to offer a OS in as many languages as possible.
Gnome Screensaver is not fitting with this philosophy, as you have to
put your images in a Pictures directory if you want them to be
displayed by the slideshow screensaver. I'm french, I don't have a
Pictures directory, I have a photos one. A spanish user will have
fotos.

I'm OK to have simple applications, but it just simply doesn't work...

First, for the desktop, it's an other bug. Different of that one.

The fix disclaimed in the last message works : i tried it.

Second, i have got a similar problem with the d3a theme ont the pop-up,
not the desktop, which is still fixed.

So, don't mix the bugs. Only one report per bug. That's all i want, and
it's a universal bug reporter rule...

I tried the log out applet on my gnome panel : it shows the pop-up with
image, which crashes too, but effectively restart (if i clicked

[Bug 29835] Workspace Switcher: Editable entries not obvious

2006-01-27 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29835

Comment:
Hmmm, I see your point.

I think the reporter is right in that it's not obvious that you can
change the names, but it _is_ a very minor issue that probably doesn't
merit much developer-attention. My best ideas at the moment are:

 * Have some explanatory text below the list. Something like 'Click a selected
workspace to change its name'.
 * Have a 'Change Name' button below the list, which makes the currently
selected item editable.
 * Leave it as it is. The feature is documented anyway.

Do you have any thoughts on this, Seb?

Thank you for this, that's the culprit: the ioctl() does return wrong data. The
output should look a bit like:

Hi Laurent!

Laurent Bigonville [2006-01-27 0:53 -]:
During the boot, hal takes hours to start. Moreover I have errors:
 run-parts: /etc/dbus-1/event.d/20hal exited with return code 2.

Please do the following in a terminal:

 sudo hald --verbose=yes --daemon=no 21 | tee hal.txt

Then please wait until the process crashes. (If it does not crash,
then there is a different problem, please just wait a bit until the
messages settled and press Control+C).

Please attach hal.txt to this bug afterwards.

Thanks,

Martin

Thanks for the feedback.

Acually, I'd rather prefer that both the open location and the small
input box popup behave the same. E.g. the open localtion searches the
current directory if only file name is entered, and the popup does an
open location when it contains a path.

The patch which has been used upstream is

The package patch has been dropped since I though the upstream one was
enough but it needs to be updated it seems. That would be nice if
somebody owning a ppc could figure what bit of the previous patch is
still required. It works fine for me, but no wonder I'm using an i386
installation :)

[Bug 29835] Workspace Switcher: Editable entries not obvious

2006-01-27 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29835

Comment:
Adding a label to explain how to do stuff is not a good idea imho, a
feature should be documented and easy to find without having to do that.

The help button opens a page which describes it:

Workspace names

Use this list box to edit the names of the workspaces on your GNOME
Desktop. To edit a workspace name, click twice on the name, then type
the new name.

So the feature is documented and that's the standard way to edit a GTK
list. Adding a button could be an option but that's better to keep the
dialog simple. I'm rejecting that feature request, that's not really a
bug. Feel free to reopen if you disagree

Public bug reported:

Description:
When evince is set to dual page view and non-continuous viewing (in view

twice in order to proceed. This appears to be because the first press of
pgdn increments the current page number, but that page (because of dual

number to a page that is not on the screen, and so advances the view.

[Bug 29881] Closing the lid should lock the screen if locking is activated in gnome-screensaver

2006-01-27 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29881

Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I have set gnome-screensaver to lock the screen if the screensaver is
activated. If I close the lid of my laptop, and then open it later, I
would expect it to be locked also.

Steps to replicate:

 1. In System-Preferences-Screensaver check the option to lock the screen
 2. Close the laptop lid.
 3. Open the lid.

What happens:

The screen comes back immediately, with no lock in place.

What I would expect to happen:

The screensaver should be active and the screen locked. The password
dialog should be presented upon opening the lid. Entering the password
should then restore the screen.

[Bug 26118] Bad rendering (hinting) in Evince and Xpdf

2006-01-27 Thread Marciano Siniscalchi
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/26118

Comment:
I AM AN IDIOT^H^H^H^H^H NEWBIE. Sorry for the caps, but I have given you
BAD debugging information. Sorrysorrysorry.

OK, here's the deal. The above screenshots are taken from Evince, but I
had other screenshots taken from xpdf. I originally thought (due to
mislabeling of one file, perhaps) that the same issue arose with xpdf
and Evince/Kpdf, but this is NOT the case.

The problem exists only with Evince and Kpdf, and NOT, repeat, NOT with
xpdf. Indeed, upon further experimentation, I have found that:

1. Rendering the above file (or other PDF files generated by pdflatex)
with xpdf gives THE SAME RESULTS under both Ubuntu Breezy and OpenSuse
10.0.

2. Rendering the same files with Evince or Kpdf gives inferior results
on Breezy relative to OpenSuse, as documented by the above screenshots.

BOTTOM LINE: I think Poppler is to blame. xpdf uses t1lib to render Type
1 fonts, and indeed pdflatex embeds Type 1 fonts. Evince and Kpdf
instead use poppler--freetype2 to render both Type 1 and TrueType
fonts. Now, it turns out that t1lib does a much better job than
freetype2 with Type 1 fonts.

So, perhaps Suse has patched Evince, Kpdf Co. to use t1lib instead of
Poppler for Type 1 fonts. In any case, I cannot get the nice output I
get with xpdf from kpdf or evince :-(

Hopefully this clarifies the situation. Again, sorry for the initial
mistake I made.

[Bug 29832] Synaptic proxy

2006-01-27 Thread Bill Chivers
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29832

Comment:
Thanks for the quick replies. I have used Ubuntu since April 2005 (I
waited for 5.04) on my notebook. I am now using 5.10 and, as Synaptic
works fine at home, all packages are up to date. Synaptic V0.57.4. At
home I have a simple direct broadband connection.

CORRECTION: Synaptic now does not work at home! After trying to change
proxy settings yesterday at work, and getting messages such as Could
not download all repository indexes, I am now getting these messages at
home for the first time! I have changed the Proxy Server setting in
Synaptic back to Direct connection to the Internet which has always
worked at home, and I get the following messages:

When I click Reload:
--
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted
because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed
index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your
network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in
the preferences.

HELP! I am not a Linux guru, just a Linux user. I really need a computer
that works, so that I can get on with my teaching and research. The
place where I work is a committed Microsoft shop, very Linux-phobic.
Whenever I contact the help desk, they tell me that I should not be
using Linux, even if I ask simple questions about proxy settings.

To answer the other questions, the proxy settings I used were the proxy
URL at work with port numbers 8080 and 3128. All other applications,
such as Firefox, work though the proxy. Firefox auto-detects the proxy
so I do not have to change settings at home.

Sorry if I sound stressed, but I am This problem is a real killer for my use
of Ubuntu at work.
Many thanks,

Bill Chivers
