[Bug 29723] Keyboard Shortcuts pref. should show shortcut for hibernate

2006-02-27 Thread Justin Husted
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29723

Comment:
I'll get the keycode sometime tomorrow. In the meantime, to clarify:

I may have changed this setting in the UI back in Hoary somehow (I don't
remember). The problem is that I couldn't find the setting in Breezy at
all except through gconf, so some weird keycode was being interpreted as
"hibernate now" which I had difficulty shutting off.

The Compal CL-56 has a keycode for hibernate/suspend which I'll dig out
for you. However, I think "hibernate" should be exposed if "suspend"
is, particularly since ACPI support is so poor right now that hibernate
is much more likely to work on most machines.

[Bug 32917] Multimedia keys only works after re-configuring in gnome-keybinding-properties and restarting rhythmbox

2006-02-27 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32917

Comment:
Are you sure totem has this issue too? I've been seeing this for years
(and still on dapper) and totem picks up play pause key changes straight
away whereas rhythmbox does not...

Be warned! totem only responds to keybindings when its window is focused
(unlike rhythmbox that always responds whether it
unfocussed/minimised/hidden etc.). If rhythmbox is open it will steal
the pause button keypresses before totem can get hold of them.

This can be demonstrated by changing keybinding when both totem and
rhythmbox are open. Assuming totem is focused it now able to see the new
key because rhythmbox has not grabbed yet.

About the icons they are not intended to stay that way and should be replaced

The applet in the panel corner is an user preference stuff, you can discuss
about it for ages, some people like it, some people don't. It's easy to drop if
you don't like it. Note that the icon for it should be change too

[Bug 31596] [Dapper] Text is not rendered properly

2006-02-27 Thread Miguel
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31596

Comment:
Hi all,

Opening a text pdf* from Physical Review Letters and Physical Review B
in evince also shows the wrong fonts in all the document. I would attach
pdf if it were free. However, this doesn't happen with Review of Modern
Physics**, although this one uses a different LaTeX document class.

Curiously, if I create a pdf (not with pdfetex, but dvi->ps->pdf) using
LaTeX and revtex4 document class (which is what PR* uses), it is
displayed properly in evince.

I would post a screenshot for comparison between xpdf (correct) and
evince, but it is a similar issue to the screenshot above. If there is
anyone interested...

[Bug 33002] logout dialog UI regression -- please revert

2006-02-27 Thread rubinstein
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/33002

Comment:
I think the fundamental problem with the dialog is that there are simply
too many buttons. I think that's confusing, and Ubuntu should be simple
and not confusing.

Why don't we split it up in 2 dialogs like GNOME upstream?

If we want just one dialog:
It would be better to clearly visually divide the 2 rows, maybe each with a
different headline so that there are two main "tasks" to choose from with
sub-options.

[Bug 31266] closing the laptop lid hogs the cpu and hard drive usage

2006-02-27 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31266

Task: ubuntu hal
   Assignee: (unassigned) => Martin Pitt
 Status: Unconfirmed => Needs Info

Comment:
Can you please find out which particular process goes crazy? You can do
something like

  sleep 3; ps --sort -%cpu aux | head -n 5

then close your lid immediately, wait about 5 seconds, and open it again. This
produces a list of the top 5 CPU hoggers. What does it output?

Once we know the culprit, we can identify what the particular process tries to
do.

Thanks!

[Bug 33002] logout dialog UI regression -- please revert

2006-02-27 Thread Eric Feliksik
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/33002

Comment:
SHORT STORY: Move reboot out of the way, lets emphasise user switching
and energy saving options (maybe in 2 different dialogs)

LONG STORY:
Although the dialog looks really shiny, I agree it's a bit confusing.
The problem is that all these actions are somewhat related, but can't really be
divided in a one-dimensional way.

(We need an option for monospace fonts in malone!)
__
| user stops working | end login | other user | save energy | ACTION
||___|||__
|v___|_v_|_?__|v___| shutdown
||_v_|_?__|| reboot
|v___|_v_|_v__|| logout
|v___|___|_v__|| switch_user
|v___|___||v___| hibernate
|v___|___||| lock_screen
|v___|___||v___|_sleep_

I don't know how helpful this is, but take a look.
I divided the action-caterories in "user stops working", "end login", "other
user", "power down", which are all quite self-explanatory. Probably countless
other combinations of logout-actions can be chosen, but what is really
relevant?

Computers are often shared between people, so "other user" is useful and
moreover it must be visible to make people aware of the possibilities.

Maybe it would be nice to remove switch user, and let people lock screen
and choose it then. But how to make people aware of the possibility?

Huh, reboot? When does one need to reboot? After very few updates. Of
course the option has been the very first in every menu since win95, but
the reasons are not relevant anymore*.

Completely removing reboot would maybe be extremely gnome-ish :-D let
the user just shut down and power up again! (Moreover, maybe this would
have practical problems when user can't access the power button). But
let agree it's seldomly needed, and let's not put it together with
logout/hibernate/sleep because we are used to that.

What about the following division? People want to stop working, or pause
working. How to do that is secondary:

PROPOSAL:

Pause working
 - switch user <- at the top, so people see it? Or merged with lock?
 - lock screen
 - hibernate
 - sleep

Stop working
 - logout
 - shutdown

Maybe the first time this is a surprising subdivision, but I think it is
welcoming exploration and makes sense once seen.

* Maybe update-manager and reboot-icon say "you must reboot" when they actually
mean you must logout to make gnome refresh, the sound-daemon restart, etcetera,
like all helpdesks say when you need a dhcp lease; if so, we might want a
"re-login" thing, too. Otherwise, reboot is only necessary for low-level (like
kernel) updates

ogra: you are bang on, g-p-m has to be taught to ingore DPMS control events
when the lid is shut. This is quite easy to do in the current framework.
src/gpm-manager.c (idle_changed_cb): needs patching. I'll have to test this on
another laptop, as my toshiba supports hardware blanking, and so does not
wake-up when I move my mouse.
Give me a few days, and I'll attach a patch -- Ben, are you able to test a
patch against CVS or do I need to test this locally first?
Thanks.

Public bug report changed:

Ok, that link 20-debconf-no-sub-pixel.conf is the problem.

You can either delete it or (better) run 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure
fontconfig' and answer positively if you want subpixel rendering.

That text you see on the fonts dialog boxes are bitmaps so they don't
depend on settings.

Anyway I think that the settings the user chooses for himself should
always be honored on this regard and not be dependent on /etc settings.

[Bug 30459] Icons in GDM options menu are broken

2006-02-27 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30459

Task: ubuntu gdm
 Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

Comment:
Right, that change fixes the issue:

 gtk+2.0 (2.8.13-1ubuntu1) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * Sync with Debian
 New upstream version:
 - gtk.Notebook.get_current_page() returns incorrect page number
   when pages hidden (Ubuntu: #30348)
   * debian/control.in:
 - clear the Build-Depends on xlibs-static-pic | xlibs-pic, not required
   * debian/patches/001_fs_documents.patch:
 - use GTK_DEFAULT_FILECHOOSER_DIR by default
 - if GTK_DEFAULT_FILECHOOSER_DIR is not defined use the "Documents" folder
   * debian/patches/001_default_fallback_icon_theme.patch:
 - set the default fallback icon theme to "gnome", fixes the issues with
   the moves of icons from hicolor to gnome

I really like the comments posted by Eric Feliksik. If we can group all
the icons in manageble, meaningful divisions it is much easier to select
the right button without much thinking.
