[Bug 34426] Scrollbars should be more visible

2006-03-11 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34426

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Hi,
Since you are creating a new ubuntu artwork for breezy (currently very orange),
I suggest to make the scroolbar a very visible shiny orange pod. It should
stick very clearly from the scrollbar background, and from all the other
widgets (like it happens in OSX and in Windows XP).

Why? Because it is very useful to be able to reach for the scrollbar
without looking. I believe in english you say with the back of an eye.
In Gnome, in maximized firefox and nautilus windows this is very
desirable, since the scrollbar is attached to the corner according to
fitt's law.

[Bug 34428] Titlebar buttons should be wider

2006-03-11 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34428

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Hi,

I noticed in the latest ubuntu-artwork, titlebar buttons (maximize,
close...) are a bit wider than tall. Like in Vista, though less
elongated.

I propose to make them much wider. This would enable the titlebar height
(and area) to be decreased, thus sparing screen space, while keeping the
same clickable area for the buttons.

I tested this and it works like a charm: edit
/usr/share/themes/Human/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml
and change aspect_ratio from 0.9 to 0.3 (in both places).

This works well for small titlebars, but not for thick titlebars. To
solve this, the button width could be made to depend on the titlebar
height. I.e. the button AREA should be a constant, and the width should
be computer with the formula

current_button_width =
constant_area / current_titlebar_height

[Bug 23002] GDM/NFS doesn't pick up my face

2006-03-11 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/23002

Comment:
upstream comments about that:

Hmm, this problem is a bit tricky. It probably isn't good for the daemon to
syslog the problem since some users might setup GDM on a network, turn on face
browsing and not care that some users faces don't show up. If IncludeAll is
turned on, this could cause tons of messages to fill up the syslog when it
wouldn't necessarily be a problem.

You are right that it would be nice if gdmphotosetup let you know that your
$HOME directory is using NFS and it won't work. However, all the logic for
checking if the home directory is local is in the daemon code and GDM doesn't
currently link any daemon code directly into the GUI code. It would be a bit
messy to change this, and copying the code from the daemon to gdmphotosetup
would create nasty maintenance problems.

One way this could be fixed is to create a gdmflexiserver --command that allows
gdmphotosetup to ask the daemon is this file/directory local and it would
return yes/no. Then gdmphotosetup could get the information from the daemon and
display a dialog to let the user know that their face image will be ignored by
GDM. However, this won't help users who set their face via the About Me
capplet unless that code is also changed to also do the same thing.

However, this may be overkill. The GDM manual is very clear about the fact
that face images are not supported over NIS/NFS. I'd expect that most
sysadmins would check the manual if the face browser isn't working and
notice this. To work around this, using the GlobalFaceDir to store user
images make sense.

There are some other options that we could explore. We could add a gdm.conf
option AllowFaceOverNFS option that would be false by default. It could
be set to true by sysadmins who want to turn it on - and then it would
simply not do the is_local check for face images. This might be the
easiest solution.

I'd accept a patch to improve the behavior.

Note, you may find that changing the RelaxPermissions in gdm.conf may make this
work better. I haven't tested, but an idea.

[Bug 30031] Google video AVI files fail to demux

Affects: gst-plugins-good0.10 (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)

 Status: Fix Committed

Description:
Files on Google Video do not play in totem and it does not seem to be
able to even demux the file. However mplayer plays them fine (it's
output is below).

Download a short video from:
http://vp.video.google.com/videodownload?version=0secureurl=lQch5gp4cw2KYetJ_P9sOZUdxC2rlFBuN8CBsQFFYu51Y8mwNNK9p3NWvDNxR34953jFf0JpET_6As9l8TOwkZpGC0Ylztd_8kDX0lUDTHoBbWu7_FIT7MZsv86MHbqyQ9hTU_EadAKYd7N1g53hdxig1uYWsUw-sBQ0BTJV8TkAwBK9RyZtRTNTo6QOR-r0HOEG_sj3P3nykQ_DFOI7YLosigh=FFNRN_ujRMsu7wbP2bfW9_qLVLsbegin=0len=32398docid=1880687558481941047

Or if that doesn't work:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1880687558481941047q=short
And click download in the right frame.

When I run totem on the stream I get an error messagebox:

Totem could not play 'file:///home/amp/Desktop/Johnnieshortclip.avi'.
Could not demultiplex stream.

The console output is uninteresting (only GTK error messages).

MPlayer output when playing the above file:

[Bug 34443] selecting an arabic keyboard changes the font size

2006-03-11 Thread Matthias Klose
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34443

Affects: control-center (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
current dapper:

- select an arabic keyboard (qwerty)
- gnome chooses to change all the fonts to a unreadable size
- during this change (about 20secs) the CPU goes up,
  and applications do not respond.
- the font change is reverted, when the keyboard is deselected.

looks like the keyboard chooser takes this huge amount of CPU time on
startup _and_ quit.

as a side node: the keyboard chooser get's confused, if you have your
nomal layout (in this case DE), then choose an arabic one, make arabic
the default, then remove arabic, then leave the keyboard selector. gnome
happily thinks of arabic beeing used ...

[Bug 33147] [Dapper] External Tools plug-in problems

2006-03-11 Thread Trouilliez vincent
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/33147

Comment:
Hi,

Okay, I just installed and tried the snipped plug-in... it's even worse !
That is, I tried all the combinations from Control + F1 through to Control +
F12, and NONE of them work.
I tried Control + any key but a Fn key and it works fine.
So somehow, it must have problems with the functions keys...

I have no audiosink in my Synaptic...

Only Alsa works...

[Bug 34489] if playing, totem uses 100% CPU after unsuspend

2006-03-11 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34489

Affects: totem (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Totem is a media player. If it is playing audio before a suspend to
RAM, then the player will consume 100% CPU after unsuspend and play no
audio.

Not much useful in the way of debugging:

  (gdb) bt
  #0 0xe410 in __kernel_vsyscall ()
  #1 0x771e4904 in poll () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6
  #2 0x773606e8 in g_main_context_iterate (context=0x80c1138, block=1,
dispatch=1, self=0x8086088) at gmain.c:2849
  #3 0x77360bb8 in IA__g_main_loop_run (loop=0x891e620) at gmain.c:2751
  #4 0x77b6e416 in gtk_main () from /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
  #5 0x08063dda in main ()
  (gdb) cont

and repeated five syscall loop consisting of:

  gettimeofday({1142103637, 360547}, NULL) = 0
  ioctl(3, FIONREAD, [0]) = 0
  gettimeofday({1142103637, 360587}, NULL) = 0
  poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8,
events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=14, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI},
{fd=ioctl(3, FIONREAD, [0]) = 0

This is a regression. Totem used to carry on playing fine across
suspend. Pressing pause, then play sometimes makes the progress bar
zoom at faster-than-realtime to catch up. On this occasion, totem has
frozen completely.

[Bug 34491] Net status missing datarate per second

2006-03-11 Thread Dhonn Lushine
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34491

Affects: gnome-netstatus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)

Description:
Net status should display the data rate per second. It is very useful.
I think its more useful than knowing the amount of packets sent.

It needs this to feel more complete.

[Bug 34428] Titlebar buttons should be wider

2006-03-11 Thread Daniel Borgmann
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34428

Comment:
You want to leave most space for the titlebar text. I also don't find
that aesthetically pleasing at all. Fitt's law is just one of many
aspects to consider. With small windows, the buttons could even be too
large to fit. Another problem is, that the same aspect ratio is being
used for the menu icon, so it would waste a lot of space for just a
small square icon.
