I am using Dapper on my HP nc6120 laptop.
I could open the recorder and when I press the record button, the timer at the
bottom start to count but the slider up there did not move at all. I tried some
adjustion to the mixer refering to a thread in the dapper development forum
but no help.
BTW I could hear myself from the speaker of my laptop while speaking with

[Bug 39515] bad perms hardcoded for multi-users

2006-04-13 Thread Nico
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-volume-manager (upstream)
   Severity: Unknown
   Priority: Unknown
 Status: Unknown
Affects: gnome-volume-manager (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
It looks like gnome-volume-manager uses pmount with hardcoded
permissions when a removable media is inserted.

This causes major issues when in a multi-user environment (different X
sessions on different ttys), as only the first logged-in user has access
to recordable CD/DVDs, USB or firewire storage.

GNOME is trying to push multi-users by incorporating "switch user" in
multiple places (screen saver, log-out, fusa), but basic desktop
functionnality is blocked by this hard coding.

Ubuntu is putting in great efforts in the user experience, this setup
dents it greatly, IMO.

A long-term fix would be to re-work the gnome-volume manager, with an
eventual interface alloring settings of permissions and/or users.

For now I'm fixing this by only placing one user in the plugdev group,
all other having no rights on removable devices.

I understand this is an upstream problem, and that upstream has been
aware of it for quite a few releases. Nevertheless it is still there.
Maybe a push from a popular distribution is all that is needed.

I'm dreaming of a fix in Dapper, but would understand a Dapper+1
effect...

[Bug 39511] Clicking a launcher repeatedly starts multiple instances of an application

2006-04-13 Thread Adam Gregory
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Minor
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Sometimes people get impatient waiting for a large application such as
evolution to start up, and they click the launcher again several times
to make sure it's starting.

The result is increased delay, and then lots of windows opening, which
can be confusing. Having startup notification helps, but I've seen it
happen still. I think maybe this behaviour should be considered a bug,
because I can't think of many occasions when having several instances of
the application start up at once is the desired outcome.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2006-04-13 Thread joehill
I really think a fork is in order here. I've heard dozens of people agreeing
that this philosophy (as Linus says "interface Nazis") is wrong, but only a
couple fanatics who say "you crybabies, real men don't even need GUIs, much
less stupid screensavers or the right to choose how many cows they want
bouncing on their screen! Just use Windows or KDE if you need configuration
options!"

If you don't like options, don't use them. Maybe have an option to disable
them. But I see no point in removing options just because someone has realized
in a zen moment that options are for losers.

I think most users are going to uninstall the "debian-desktop" package that
depends on this package and install the xscreen-savers and not care about dbus
and all that stuff.

[Bug 36581] Re: gam_server consumes lots of cpu time

2006-04-13 Thread Frank Siegert
Running Kubuntu Dapper up to date as of 2006-04-13, I see gam_server constantly
at 15% CPU usage and echoing a lot of messages into ~/.xsession-errors (more
than once a second):

Failed to process 26 bytes from server
invalid length 24902
invalid length 24902
invalid length 24902
invalid length 24902
many many times ... and then:
end from FAM server connection
invalid length 24902
invalid length 24902
invalid length 24902
invalid length 24902
invalid length 24902
... many many times

Funnily enough, after a reboot I was not able to reproduce it (using a VFAT
storage device, browsing pictures, whatever...). But then doing nothing while
writing this bug report (except for a look at "less ~/.xsession-errors")
suddenly gam_server went mad again. I don't know, if accessing
~/.xsession-errors could cause this problem, sounds too weird.

I followed the debugging instructions and sent gam_server a SIGUSR2, which
produced a big file in /tmp, of which I will attach a few hundred lines, which
seem to repeat afterwards. maybe it is of help to track this annoying bug.

Btw... There seem to be a few duplicates of this: #30868, #31329, #3814

Sorry, but "(dé)connection" is incorrect (a common mistake).

The noun is "(dé)connexion" (with an "x" in standard French orthography),
even though the verb is "(dé)connecter".

And "périphérique" (with "ph") is the only correct French orthography.

So the second one will be "déconnexion du périphérique"...

Thanks.

[Bug 39461] Re: X-chat Gnome crashes on connect

2006-04-13 Thread aamukahvi
Here:
[/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/netmonitor.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/dbus.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/notification.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/notification.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/soundnotification.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/notifyosd.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/autoaway.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/dbus.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/soundnotification.so,
/usr/lib/xchat-gnome/plugins/soundnotification.so]

No plugins are selected in xchat-gnome preferences, though. Some, including
auto-away, were selected when the first crash occurred. I then tried without
the plugins. When it crashed again, with (seemingly) no plugins, I thought it
wasn't the plugins.

If not, maybe /usr/share/icons/gnome/48x48/stock/generic/stock_example.png

[Bug 33002] Re: logout dialog UI objections

2006-04-13 Thread floid
If this amateur UI nerd can throw into the fray...

Part of the problem is the decision to make a switch to a full dialog from a
pulldown menu. Presumably this is inspired by a desire for consistency with
Windows.

The irony is, within the various Gnome metaphors, what's needed is an inverse
of the Windows 'Start' menu -- that is, a rapidly-accessed 'Exit' menu that
details all the various ways to depart a session.

There's been some haphazard rearranging of these features in recent GUIs; first
the Mac had its shutdown item buried in a menu; some subset of followon GUIs
moved it to a more-easily-located dedicated widget when 'docks' and 'launchers'
became popular.

Then came Windows 9x, with the Start menu, OS X with the tweak in concept for
their Apple menu, and fast-user-switching on both of the big remaining personal
computing platforms standardizing on the upper-right corner.

...

What I see is the germ of a pretty damn good idea here; the 'exit' icon, while
initially unfamiliar (as hieroglyphs always are), is an appropriate
categorization for all these 'You are about to invoke a dramatic switch in
mode' options. Why have FUS in one widget and logout and shutdown buried
elsewhere, when they're all related to session management and the user may
still be decision-making while invoking the menu or dialog? Also, for whatever
weird confluence of reasons, the positional consistency for 'close button' has
moved from upper left to upper right in the past decade, so there's some
familiarity for the average MS migrant there.

That's the good part. The bad part is making it a full blocking dialog when it
doesn't deserve to be. A dropdown combining the FUS list with shutdown and
logout options is much more easily dismissed (by 'clicking off' to change
focus) when invoked accidentally, no 'Cancel' or 'exit' item needed, and no
consideration of focus required. Only destructive selections (a full logout or
shutdown) then deserve a blocking confirmation dialog when selected to prove
the user's really sure.

This probably amounts to wishlisting a *third* rewrite of the whole
functionality; I haven't seen Gnome's official approach yet, and bumped into
Ubuntu's current direction in the past day or two. I can also appreciate that
the existing approach is probably guaranteed to survive across GNOME/KDE/XFCE
distributions, while a panel applet that does more of the heavy lifting itself
rather than invoking another X client might not, but such is life.

(Off-topic, but when it comes to panel layout and use of screen corners, I like
to put the window list applet in the top left. This bumps the Applications
menu out of that spot, but serves my need for OS/2 Warpcenter nostalgia and is
a bit more convenient than strafing desktops or sliding along the Windows-style
switcher. The changing icon also provides a cute and consistently-placed
reminder of what has focus without having to visually interpret a messy
desktop. Since 'preferred' applications wind up with their own launcher icons
anyway, far from screen corners, anyone higher-up want to try this for a while
and decide if it's worth considering as a basic UI feature?)

2006-04-13 Thread Lakin Wecker
Thanks for your bug report. I'm reassigning this to gnome-screensaver as it
seems to be the appropriate package. I'm also reducing the severity to
wishlist as this seems to be a feature request. The package maintainer can
change this as they see fit.

[Bug 39467] unknown keyboard language when unlocking screen

2006-04-13 Thread Lutz
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Wishlist
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I use Ubuntu on a computer with a QWERTY keyboard. Sometime I change the
keyboard setting to QWERTZ to write in a non-english language. Unfortunately my
password contains a Y. Thus I run into trouble when I try to unlock my screen
after a coffee break because I don't know if it is configured to QWERTZ or
QWERTY. Thus a notification about the selected keyboard layout in the window
where I have to enter my password would be usefull.
It seems not usefull to show these notification to people who don't change
their default keyboard layout. Thus it should show up only if the keyboard is
configured to a non default layout or if the user has several keyboard layouts
available.

[Bug 38986] Re: beagle should replace search tool if installed

2006-04-13 Thread towolf
I think it was a bad idea to remap “Search” on the Places menu with
beagle-search.

Simply, how do we access the file finding tool now??

It's not about superiority -I like beagle- but they have entirely different use
cases. Only insane people let beagle index / recursively considering that
memory and cpu usage are immense. Also, beagle doesn't index all files; g-s-t
can be forced to look inside of all files; g-s-t is nifty in that it collates
the results of slocate and the find utility, which is much more powerful than
beagle is. How do you search for files of more than 50 Mo, with the owner of
xxx et cetera pp. Just look at the available criteria in g-s-t. The loss is
amazing.

There are numerous ways to access beagle already. I know of beagle-search on
the app-menu, deskbar-applet, F12 and the nautilus integrated search.
Gnome-search-tool was lost entirely. I don't think beagle-search is adequate as
the function that represents “Search” in the Places menu.

It was Ubuntu Dapper (current packages as of about a week ago). I didn't
do anything particularly special to get the hang - I have an FTP icon on
my desktop (username set, but no password, so I need to type my password
every time I double-click on it).

In this particular case, I browsed into a sub-folder, and dragged a
folder from there onto my desktop. The folder consisted of the following

[Bug 39482] nautilus tries to move when dragging and dropping from read-only folders, instead of copying

2006-04-13 Thread Matthew East
Public bug reported:

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
1. Open nautilus
2. Go to a directory where the user only has read access, not write access
(e.g. /usr/share/example-content)
3. Try and drag and drop a file onto the desktop

Expected Result: Nautilus copies the file only the desktop
Actual Result: Nautilus tries to move the file, and returns an error about
permissions
