[Bug 33002] Re: logout dialog UI objections
Now, I will first agree that there should be some work on making icons match other things, and having them be themable would be great, but it sounds like a lot of people are on that already. The main thing that irked me about the dialogue was the sheer size. I mean, it takes up what, 25% of the total screen area? I find that a bit excessive, and not what I would expect from a simple dialogue window. If some of the space between icons were removed, space around the border shrunk down, and maybe the icons themselves made just a tad smaller if necessary. Basically, my impression when the window popped up was that it was huge. So, just some trimming would be great in my opinion. -- logout dialog UI objections https://launchpad.net/bugs/33002 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 40259] Re: unrealistic shadows
There's nothing tasteful, professional, or artistic about the current shadows. Inkscape can do better, as seen. The original Tango (grey) icons had similar shadows but I think they were imported png's. Why do you think the original had them? It looks more professional. That was the original design/concept which falls inline with all other professional icon themes that use the concept. These dots do not acheive anything but an eye sore compared to my example above. So there's no reason to file a bug against tango. Jacob knows what looks better and since you are already in contact with him just point him to this page so he'll know how to acheive similar with svg. No one wants a round object sticking out below their square file or square folder. [Bug 40261] Re: navigation icons are too dark
Sorry, it wasn't intended to be commanding, but I definately see how it can easily be taken that way. What do you mean "I'm sure the people of the Ubuntu Art team will have look and see how their consensus is"? Because no one seems to be doing so. If you mean irc ubuntu-art...it's dead. If you mean irc dapper-looknothing is ever said, though peole are there for some reason other than discussing etc... The nav icons do not match anything anywhere in the desktop color scheme. It's close to progressbars, range slider trough, and checks/options, but those are that color because, as Mark puts it, they are not seen often. [Bug 38584] Re: [dapper] playable movies can't be played if inside a web page!
I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression with my previous comment - it was just a set of comments on my findings so far. To answer your questions as best I can: if you open a URL in the address bar with mms:, then a helper application will be called. That can show the URL in another window. However, that isn't much use when trying to use a plugin. The debug messages you see are just debug messages, and don't help with this problem. The nsPluginInstance comment is a reference to the way Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox communicates with plugins, though it's difficult to get good documentation on this :-) The model used by totem is that firefox downloads the content, and passes it to the totem backend. I don't know why the URL is passed to totem, and the argument doesn't look like it was used. This model makes sense for http: and ftp: URLs, but NOT for mms: URLs, as firefox cannot handle them itself (I think). My proposed way of handling this would be to check if the URL passed to the plugin starts with mms: - if it does, then pass the URL to totem instead of fd://0. I will be attaching a possible fix in a minute, though it does need a bit more testing than I have given it so far. -- [dapper] playable movies can't be played if inside a web page! https://launchpad.net/bugs/38584 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 36681] Re: changing gdm theme in dapper flight5 not possible
I have the same problem. The problem persists through to the current dapper beta release, I was hoping it would fix with updates but it hasn't. I am pretty new to linux but I try to figure out my own problems but this one has me stumped. Looking through documentation on GDM i should have a /etc/gdm/custom.conf file but I don't. I open up gdmsetup put in my password and It seems to work but then any changes I make, not just the greeter but I tried to disable the sound and make the greeting custom, are not saved. I tried before to change it manually but that also didn't work for some reason even though I told the file to save it reverted back to the default. The only way I got it to work was to delete the human theme and to change the folder of the theme I wanted to use to be called human, which is a really backwards messed up way of doing it any help would be appreciated. -- changing gdm theme in dapper flight5 not possible https://launchpad.net/bugs/36681 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 40441] audio-preview in nautilus is actually unpleasant
Public bug reported: Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: I think the audio-preview thing (hold your mouse one an audio-file in nautilus, hear it playing) should not be enabled by default. I understand this is a very subjective topic, but anyway: 1) Audio files can not be simultaneously previewed like images can. You always want to listen only one file at a time. 2) previewing an audio-file is interrupting in the sense that you can't ignore it. You can ignore an image thumbnail in nautilus. 3) If I want to hear a file, I open it in totem. Then I can scroll the track, and switch between files faster. The only time I use the nautilus-audio-preview feature is when it's activated accidentily, and then it's just alarming me (as in frightening/shocking). It's an interesting feature, but I personally don't think it's a very good idea after all. Beyond my given objections, it doesn't offer anything I can't do with totem. On top of that, if I *want* to use the feature, it doesn't even always work, so trying to use it is more frustrating than just using totem. (I understand that the last point is not against the feature itself, as that bug could be fixed - and should be, if we want to keep this behaviour). -- audio-preview in nautilus is actually unpleasant https://launchpad.net/bugs/40441 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 38584] Re: [dapper] playable movies can't be played if inside a web page!
fd://0 refers to stdin (the backend reads from the frontend through a pipe). It usually has to be done this way (rather than passing a URL) because firefox may have to pass cookies/authentication details/etc. to the website. Though that brings up an interesting point here - could it be that the only URLs to have trouble might be mms: URLs? Because Mozilla obviously wouldn't know how to download them... something to investigate. Further info: nsPluginInstance::SetWindow is called three times, but after that - nothing. No call to nsPluginInstance::Write or nsPluginInstance::WriteReady. Which is also a suggestion that firefox wasn't able to send any data. One more thing about the apparent hang of the UI - if you test totem-mozilla-viewer by passing a video in over stdin, the UI doesn't seem to be updated until a sufficient amount of data to display video is shown. -- [dapper] playable movies can't be played if inside a web page! https://launchpad.net/bugs/38584 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 40314] Re: Themable logout dialog
To follow-up on the "ZzZ" bit: as I note on bug #40324, gnome-power-manager HEAD has been switched to use Tango artwork. So upstream now officially uses the "ZzZ" in those icons. Bug #4032 is about switching g-p-m to use those new icons in Dapper. The current icon set in g-p-m is ugly, so I have a lot of faith that the Tango icons will make it in. If so, the "ZzZ" is already used in the desktop and you may as well use those icons (48x48 and svg versions now available in gnome CVS) in the logout dialog now. The "ZzZ" may be a problem for a few users, but you can argue that way for any icon, you will always find someone who doesn't get a metaphor. But the "ZzZ" icons are much better than the current (which macke no sense at all to me, dunno how they are releated to sleep and hibernate). Lastly, using what upstream does is another plus, as many other future distributions will ship those icons. -- Themable logout dialog https://launchpad.net/bugs/40314 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
