[Bug 33002] Re: logout dialog UI objections

2006-04-20 Thread Tony Yarusso
Now, I will first agree that there should be some work on making icons
match other things, and having them be themable would be great, but it
sounds like a lot of people are on that already. The main thing that
irked me about the dialogue was the sheer size. I mean, it takes up
what, 25% of the total screen area? I find that a bit excessive, and
not what I would expect from a simple dialogue window. If some of the
space between icons were removed, space around the border shrunk down,
and maybe the icons themselves made just a tad smaller if necessary.
Basically, my impression when the window popped up was that it was huge.
So, just some trimming would be great in my opinion.

Public bug reported:

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I dont feel that having flags on these menu items is apropriate.
Many people will disagree with the choice of flags from a personalisation point
of view ("why do only USA and Germany get flags there, why isnt it
localised?"), and many from a political perspective.
To many people the USA's and Germany's flags are things they would rather not
see again.
I'm asking that the flags be made some sort of colours only, without logos, or
the graphic changed entirely.

[Bug 40259] Re: unrealistic shadows

2006-04-20 Thread Billy Cantrell
There's nothing tasteful, professional, or artistic about the current shadows.
Inkscape can do better, as seen. The original Tango (grey) icons had similar
shadows but I think they were imported png's. Why do you think the original had
them? It looks more professional. That was the original design/concept which
falls inline with all other professional icon themes that use the concept.
These dots do not acheive anything but an eye sore compared to my example
above. So there's no reason to file a bug against tango. Jacob knows what looks
better and since you are already in contact with him just point him to this
page so he'll know how to acheive similar with svg.

No one wants a round object sticking out below their square file or square
folder. It's very odd and distracting.

[Bug 40261] Re: navigation icons are too dark

2006-04-20 Thread Billy Cantrell
Sorry, it wasn't intended to be commanding, but I definately see how it can
easily be taken that way.

What do you mean "I'm sure the people of the Ubuntu Art team will have look and
see how their consensus is"? Because no one seems to be doing so. If you mean
irc ubuntu-art...it's dead. If you mean irc dapper-looknothing is ever
said, though peole are there for some reason other than discussing etc...

The nav icons do not match anything anywhere in the desktop color scheme. It's
close to progressbars, range slider trough, and checks/options, but those are
that color because, as Mark puts it, they are not seen often. Nav icons are
seen often and really should be toned down to follow this concept and flow with
the rest of the desktop. Consistency.

[Bug 38584] Re: [dapper] playable movies can't be played if inside a web page!

2006-04-20 Thread Gary Coady
I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression with my previous comment - it was just
a set of comments on my findings so far.

To answer your questions as best I can:
if you open a URL in the address bar with mms:, then a helper application will
be called. That can show the URL in another window. However, that isn't much
use when trying to use a plugin.

The debug messages you see are just debug messages, and don't help with this
problem. The nsPluginInstance comment is a reference to the way
Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox communicates with plugins, though it's difficult to
get good documentation on this :-)

The model used by totem is that firefox downloads the content, and passes it to
the totem backend. I don't know why the URL is passed to totem, and the
argument doesn't look like it was used. This model makes sense for http: and
ftp: URLs, but NOT for mms: URLs, as firefox cannot handle them itself (I
think).

My proposed way of handling this would be to check if the URL passed to the
plugin starts with mms: - if it does, then pass the URL to totem instead of
fd://0.

I will be attaching a possible fix in a minute, though it does need a bit more
testing than I have given it so far.

[Bug 36681] Re: changing gdm theme in dapper flight5 not possible

2006-04-20 Thread Jacob
I have the same problem. The problem persists through to the current
dapper beta release, I was hoping it would fix with updates but it
hasn't. I am pretty new to linux but I try to figure out my own
problems but this one has me stumped. Looking through documentation on
GDM i should have a /etc/gdm/custom.conf file but I don't. I open up
gdmsetup put in my password and It seems to work but then any changes I
make, not just the greeter but I tried to disable the sound and make the
greeting custom, are not saved. I tried before to change it manually
but that also didn't work for some reason even though I told the file to
save it reverted back to the default. The only way I got it to work
was to delete the human theme and to change the folder of the theme I
wanted to use to be called human, which is a really backwards messed up
way of doing it any help would be appreciated.

[Bug 40248] Re: Default desktop icon is inaccessible

2006-04-20 Thread Ben Williams
This is a new installation but it was one of the earlier Flights, 3 or 4 I
think. It is an ntfs partition and the fstab line was created by the installer.
Here's the /etc/fstab line:
/dev/sda1 /media/sda1 ntfsdefaults0 0

I'm going to do a fresh install withe the Dapper Beta CD and see what happens.

[Bug 40441] audio-preview in nautilus is actually unpleasant

2006-04-20 Thread Eric Feliksik
Public bug reported:

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:

I think the audio-preview thing (hold your mouse one an audio-file in
nautilus, hear it playing) should not be enabled by default. I
understand this is a very subjective topic, but anyway:

1) Audio files can not be simultaneously previewed like images can. You always
want to listen only one file at a time.
2) previewing an audio-file is interrupting in the sense that you can't ignore
it. You can ignore an image thumbnail in nautilus.
3) If I want to hear a file, I open it in totem. Then I can scroll the track,
and switch between files faster. The only time I use the nautilus-audio-preview
feature is when it's activated accidentily, and then it's just alarming me (as
in frightening/shocking).

It's an interesting feature, but I personally don't think it's a very
good idea after all. Beyond my given objections, it doesn't offer
anything I can't do with totem.

On top of that, if I *want* to use the feature, it doesn't even always
work, so trying to use it is more frustrating than just using totem. (I
understand that the last point is not against the feature itself, as
that bug could be fixed - and should be, if we want to keep this
behaviour).

Description:
Hi Martin,

This property is used by gnome-vfs 2.14.1 to fix bug #21576 (copy from
CD being ro). Upstream discussion with patch is on
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/nautilus-list/2006-March/msg00045.html

I've backported the changes from CVS, that looks fine to me for dapper
but I prefer to have your opinion on that before uploading, patch coming
let me know what you think about it

I can confirm this also on a Thinkpad T40p using Dapper Beta freshly installed.

but when pushing the "up" volume button, it moves the progress bar up 1/30th

[Bug 40401] Re: Help strings translations losed in version 2.14.1-0ubuntu3

2006-04-20 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your bug. That's because the translations match and english
string. When the english string change the translations are outdated and
not used, you have to update them. Dapper is not string frozen yet,
translations may change like that, translators have to update to reflect
the change. I'm closing it since that's not a bug of the package, you
can update the translation on rosetta

[Bug 40401] Help strings translations losed in version 2.14.1-0ubuntu3

2006-04-20 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
The last package update to version 2.14.1-0ubuntu3 applies the
"debian/patches/11_session_dialog.patch" patch, but now the help strings
does not appear translated. The older version shows the help strings
translated.

Curiously, the help string for "Reboot" remains translated (it's the
only help string remaining translated).

[Bug 38584] Re: [dapper] playable movies can't be played if inside a web page!

2006-04-20 Thread Gary Coady
fd://0 refers to stdin (the backend reads from the frontend through a pipe). It
usually has to be done this way (rather than passing a URL) because firefox may
have to pass cookies/authentication details/etc. to the website.

Though that brings up an interesting point here - could it be that the only
URLs to have trouble might be mms: URLs? Because Mozilla obviously wouldn't
know how to download them... something to investigate.

Further info:
nsPluginInstance::SetWindow is called three times, but after that - nothing. No
call to nsPluginInstance::Write or nsPluginInstance::WriteReady. Which is also
a suggestion that firefox wasn't able to send any data.

One more thing about the apparent hang of the UI - if you test
totem-mozilla-viewer by passing a video in over stdin, the UI doesn't seem to
be updated until a sufficient amount of data to display video is shown.

[Bug 40314] Re: Themable logout dialog

2006-04-20 Thread Michael Monreal
To follow-up on the "ZzZ" bit: as I note on bug #40324, gnome-power-manager
HEAD has been switched to use Tango artwork. So upstream now officially uses
the "ZzZ" in those icons.

Bug #4032 is about switching g-p-m to use those new icons in Dapper. The
current icon set in g-p-m is ugly, so I have a lot of faith that the Tango
icons will make it in. If so, the "ZzZ" is already used in the desktop and you
may as well use those icons (48x48 and svg versions now available in gnome CVS)
in the logout dialog now.

The "ZzZ" may be a problem for a few users, but you can argue that way for any
icon, you will always find someone who doesn't get a metaphor. But the "ZzZ"
icons are much better than the current (which macke no sense at all to me,
dunno how they are releated to sleep and hibernate). Lastly, using what
upstream does is another plus, as many other future distributions will ship
those icons.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 34521 ***

OK, as long as there is still a bug open to move the signal strength bar
closer to the network status icon.

[Bug 40259] Re: unrealistic shadows

2006-04-20 Thread Lapo Calamandrei
I think this is mostly a matter of taste. Tango guidelines do not define
any rule for shadows at the moment, when inkscape and rsvg will have a
working mask support things may change. For now I'd keep the shadows as
they are.

[Bug 40339] Re: Gthumb crashes when entering fullscreen

2006-04-20 Thread Athurva Gore
The upstream bug number was #336851.

No offense intended by saying Dapper didn't package the release; I know version
freezes are a good thing. :-) I wasn't sure if the new version would be
pacakged, or if the patch would simply be added to the current version, though,
so I gave as much info as possible.

[Bug 40151] Re: trash icon looks like battery

2006-04-20 Thread Lapo Calamandrei
I did that trash icon as a "tangoification" of the original human
design, so I think this bug should be filled against human icon theme.
I'd prefer to leave those "strategic" icons as similar as possible to
the human one while keeping tango style.
