[Bug 40154] Re: [Bug 40154] Re: Gthumb's behavior inconsistent with rest of system and coutnerproductive
I am using Dapper, actually. I've not tried importing photos on a Breezy box, so I'm not sure how it would behave. I'm not sure that the problem is confined to this program--Gthumb just happens to be the "photo manager"-type program that is used by default. Since posting this bug initially, I've noticed that the "import photos" functionality used by Ubuntu is tied to Gthumb, and not independent of it, which is unfortunate. What I'm saying is that, from a usability standpoint, automatically dropping the user into a specialized program for photo management after importing photos from a camera is a fundamentally broken action, unless the same program is *always* used by default when the user enters a folder predominantly contains images, or unless it makes it VERY clear to the user a) that this is not their regular file manager and b) *why* this program has been opened rather than a simple Nautilus window, in which they would normally see photos when browsing around their home folder. Otherwise, any time the user sees photos from another source (the web or email, or saved from a previous OS), the interface and process for dealing with *those* photos is different from that presented when he or she plugs in a camera and imports photos. This problem is compounded by the fact that Gthumb in particular strongly resembles a Nautilus window with a tree-view left sidebar. As using Gthumb to open all folders containing a large number of photos would create entirely new problems, as well as being difficult to make happen in the first place, that does not seem to be a reasonable solution. I would recommend one of the following: 1. Use another program as the default photo manager, rather than Gthumb. Preferably one that is less-similar to Nautilus. I'm not sure what the development status is on F-Spot, but at least it *looks* like a photo manager, unlike Gthumb. Any other program would do, as long as it is more user-friendly and overtly helpful than Gthumb. 2. Use some kind of stand-alone camera interface to snag the photos, and when that dialogue is finished, send the user to a Nautilus window with the photo folder open. I'm not even sure that there *is* a stand-alone photo importing interface that matches the ease-of-use of the one in Gthumb (ha, the one thing it gets right!) or in F-Spot, but if there is, it could be used here. In my opinion, either of these would be better than the current solution. They both seem about equally good to me, though for different reasons. Again, I'm sorry if this isn't the proper place to discuss this sort of problem, but I'd seen it suggested in the forums that the bug reporting system was intended both for true bugs (I.E. "software package X crashes when I do this") and for suggestions (I.E. "it makes no sense that Ubuntu does Y when such-and-such thing happens, it should do Z instead"). -- Gthumb's behavior inconsistent with rest of system and coutnerproductive https://launchpad.net/bugs/40154 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 41312] Re: Video DVDs detected as DVD-ROMs
You probably have the totem-gstreamer backend installed. Getting DVDs to work through this is pretty difficult (or was with gst0.8). Did you use 'vlc %d' as your command? It's possible that the DVDs are getting mounted somewhere different than before; the %d variable should be the path to the mounted disc. Dennis, do you get any change if you alter the command? It'd also be interesting to see if this occurs on a fresh install of Dapper Beta. [Bug 39428] Re: [Dapper] Applications can't be added in nautilus open with dialog for directories
I have this exact same problem (using Ubuntu Dapper, up to date via online repositories). I tried creating a new "test" user, and logging in as that user, so that the default Ubuntu desktop settings would be applied. But the problem still exists for that user. On a folder in Nautilus, my right-click menu shows (among other things): Open with "Filelight" Open with "Konqueror" Open with Other Application... If I choose the "Other Application" option, I can select "XMMS music player" from the list, and that works (plays the music files). But this application is not remembered in the "Open with ..." choices in the right-click menu. Also, instead of choosing "Open with Other Application...", I can choose "Properties" from the bottom of that menu. This brings up a tabbed dialog. The "Open With" tab lists the options I can use to open a "folder": Filelight Konqueror Open Folder (this option is selected) Clicking the "+ Add" button is also ineffective at adding "XMMS" to the list of options. And clicking any of the two non-selected items fails to change the selected item - the radio bullet will not move from "Open Folder" to any other bullet-hole. In summary, it behaves as if the list is somehow "read-only". I wonder if this bug is a duplicate of #35463 ? ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed => Confirmed -- [Dapper] Applications can't be added in nautilus open with dialog for directories https://launchpad.net/bugs/39428 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 33727] Re: No admin menus with NIS users
The sound issue has to do with group membership. The only users that get "sound" are members of the audio group. You would have to set up nis to allow passing low GIDs and make the user on the server a member of audio (gid 29). Ubuntu (Debian) use a whole bunch of these... You need to be a member of "cdrom" to use CDs, "dialout" to use a modem, "plugdev" to use removable media like pen drives. This is a PITA with NIS because you have to manually add users to a bunch of groups and potentially dangerous since you need to export the low GIDs. Not a biggie on my home network, but... LDAP should handle these issues much more elegantly, but in its current form, it's a pain to set up, administer and use in a SOHO environment (read: overkill). Unfortunately, adding your NIS user to "admin" doesn't get you the menus, apparently because access to them is granted or denied locally BEFORE the NIS GIDs have been checked. All of the others (cdrom, plugdev, etc. work if mapped). -- No admin menus with NIS users https://launchpad.net/bugs/33727 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: At the risk of being considered picky, I just wanted to report that when using the default Human theme all the default icons in evolution are substituted by the theme's icons as expected, except for the "Not Junk" Icon, which appears as the default "GNOME" icon. Considering that the "Junk" and "Not Junk" actions are opposite and on the default icon theme their only difference is that the "Not Junk" icon theme has a small red cross at the bottom corner, it seems that on the Human theme this consistence is broken. That is, the "Junk" and "Not Junk" icons are completely different in this case, which leads to think that they are not related to each other -which is not true. -- [Dapper] Evolution's "Not Junk" icon is not themed using Human https://launchpad.net/bugs/41391 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 41208] Re: Sometimes crashes without reason
Yes, I think that is just a way of getting the panel blocked. And independently of the CPUfreq applet, when I startup linux I still get the panel blank. Just wondering, if it does have to do with CPUfreq applet, maybe the startup problem would be because it tries to load up the applet and fails. [Bug 41259] Re: Ctrl + click is broken and behaves badly
The issue with your description is that "unexpected behaviour" "strange behaviour" are not describing anything. It's easier to understand few steps described: "- press ctrl - click on 1 then 2 then 3 then 1 then 2 then 3 then 1 ... when clicking on 1 everything is unselected, only 1 should be changed" Anyway your issue doesn't happen on my box, marking as unconfirmed maybe somebody else will get it. [Bug 36915] Re: dapper flight5 - totem does not start
I have the same problem that the guy (or girl) who posted the bug. When I try to run totem from shell this is what I get: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ totem The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 69 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
