[Bug 48907] Re: Cant add and application launcher to panel

Also, you should be right-clicking, not left-clicking, the open the

[Bug 48226] Re: Autohide bugs

2006-06-07 Thread jmspeex
The following setup should make it easier to reproduce the bug:
1) Turn auto-hide on (of course) with an un-hide timeout of 0
2) Turn the HD DMA off
3) Make sure that the machine is swapping a bit
4) Lower the CPU frequency (e.g. 600 MHz - 1 GHz)

This is obviously extreme, but it should make the problem happen more often. My
actual setup (where the bug still happens) is:
Pentium-M 2.13 GHz (with powernowd often reducing speed to 800 MHz)
1 GB RAM, no swap
HD DMA on.

2006-06-07 Thread jmspeex
Not sure if would be part of the same bug because it's not only with
auto-hide. When the icons on the main menu take too long to load, the
menu shows up with the size it would take without the icons. Then, when
the icons appear, the menu does not grow and a vertical scrollbar
appears on the menu. This means that the appearance of the menus ends up
depending on the speed of the disk you have -- at least the first time
you use them.

[Bug 48936] GDM: Greeter application crashing

2006-06-07 Thread blaksaga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When logging out (quitting), the gdm themed greeter appears properly,
however, when using ctrl+alt+backspace to restart gdm, an error appears
along the lines of "The greeter application appears to be crashing."
Hitting ok then takes me to the non-themed greeter which works just
fine.

To reproduce:
1) Logout out into themed gdm greeter.
2) Ctrl+alt+backspace to restart gdm.

Others have been having similar problems on the ubuntu forums. A few
threads of significance:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=138321

however, I was unable to test the previous version as it no longer
exists on archive.ubuntu.com.

[Bug 48748] Re: The applications menu has gone

2006-06-07 Thread Miguel Angel Ramirez
I use Ubuntu 6.06, I just installed it.

I installed gnome-pim and more programs using synaptic, when I tried to
unselect some applications from the menu using alacarte I unselected the
Applications Submenu that gnome-pim used to put their two programs, I
unselect more programs, I created a new account to try to reproduce the
bug, and saw that unselecting only the Applications Submenu the
Application menu had gone.

If I run again alacarte using ALT+F2 I can select again the Applications
Submenu and the Application menu came back, but if I unselect the
Applications Submenu and close alacarte, when I run again alacarte and
the only thing I do, nothing else, is to push the Revert Button then I
lose the menu and can't make it to come back.

By the way I don't really need gnome-pim, I just installed it to try. I
uninstalled it but the menu didn't come back.

[Bug 45326] Re: undefined symbol in libbackup_conduit.so

note; I never had this personally until I started playing with sync

I find that this comes up when gpilotd is run on the commandline, and I
try to Enable one of the conduits through gpilotd-control-applet

(Seems currently limited to Backup. When I was running with no gpilotd,
it seemed to affect also the file and test conduits)

In gpilotd-control-applet, the error is: Unable to instantiate (Backup)
conduit.

It means I cannot change the settings for the conduit, but does not have an
effect on it working.

Hope it helps

2006-06-07 Thread Frank Rudzicz

Bug #43226 seems quite similar - maybe they should be merged? (sorry)

When I was in Suse 10.0 the problematic *odp stopped crashing openoffice
once I installed OpenOffice 2.0 as provided from their website. I thought it
was an issue with Java dependencies, since I had updated JDK after
installing the original OpenOffice 1.999 (I contacted OpenOffice directly at
that time).

Once I went to 2.0 I never went back, so I didn't observe the effect of
changing openoffices. Oddly, a presentation once crashed just when I was
just scrolling up and down on the left slides pane quickly with the
middle-scroll wheel on the mouse. The recovered *odp and the *odp I had
saved before the crash could then not be opened.

[Bug 48175] Re: Partition editor freezes on the install

2006-06-07 Thread Devin Ben-Hur
I'm getting similar freezes with a Dapper install on a newly built
system.

After some poking around, what I've found is that i can generally run
indefinately off the live CD, but once I run Gparted and it does it's
initial device scan, the next time the system accesses the CD (usually
when I Apply Gparted actions, but it could be anything that has to load
from disk), it gets a media error (bad sector) on /hda and locks up. If
I'm lucky, an open terminal or console will let me run dmesg (which is
where I see the media error for hda), though often I can't even get that
far and Alt-SysRq-t produces no output.

I've tried alternative boot options (acpi=off noapic nolapic) and a beta
mb BIOS (v3.35) to no avail. I've run a 4 hour memtest and verified the
CD media (all pass).

System:
MSI K8NGM2-FID (GeForce 6150 + nForce 430)
AMD64 X2 3800+
2GB OCZ PC3200 CAS-2 memory pair.
2 x 300GB 7200.9 Seagate Barracuda SATA2 drives.
NEC IDE DVD Burner ND-3550A

Here's what I could transcribe of the dmesg output:

[313.342049] hda: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady
SeekComplte Error }
[313.342058] hda: media error (bad sector): error=0x34 { AbortedCommand
LastFailedSense=0x03 }
[313.342066] end request: I/O error dev hda sector 161224
[313.342071] Buffer I/O error on device hda logical block 40306

This repeats twice on sequential sectors and then the system hangs.

I've successfully used cfdisk to write some partitions without the hang
problem (and i'm now exploring mkfs to see if I can follow thru and get
an install without using Gparted at all). The freeze appears to be set
up by something that happens in the Gparted device scan conducted when
launched.

[Bug 38845] Re: gnome confused when date not set correctly

2006-06-07 Thread LittleBuddha
I have a Wallstreet G3 Powerbook with a dead PRAM and my symptomps are
the same as described in this bug.

Could this not be fixed by setting some kind of date redefinition in the
init file for GDM that runs at startup. Something like, if date< 1970
then set date to something after 1970.

Thereby us that have old laptops could still use them, without buying a
new PRAM, that costs a bundle.

[Bug 48907] Cant add and application launcher to panel

2006-06-07 Thread Lukáš Zapletal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Hello,

after resume of hibernated machine I cannot add new application
shortcuts by leftclicking on a panel, "add to panel" and "application
starter". When the dialog is properly filled and Close button pressed,
nothing happens. No error message, nothing.

The drag and drop from menu do not work too. The only way to add a
shortcut on the panel is to restart GNOME.

I am not sure if the hibernate process triggers this bug. I have the
clean installation of Dapper Drake on ThinkPad R50e.

[Bug 48887] Re: Zooming/Text functions cause 100% CPU Utilization & possible memory leak?

2006-06-07 Thread Jordan Erickson
This actually seems to only happen when an existing drawing is being
edited (from the old version in Breezy?) and occurs for me usually when
mouse-scrolling and clicking around/editing in a text box. Things become
increasingly slower when I do this and eventually the system just grinds
to a halt.

[Bug 34112] Re: gnome programs don't respect ~/.cups/lpoptions

2006-06-07 Thread Dirk
@Pascal

I have not yet tried the patch, but the only printing that ever happens
in the current issue ubuntu is the whatever the default is for that
printer. You cannot change it with the gnome printer dialog. Any
changes/options one makes in the dialog is ignored. If the default is A4
600 dpi plain paper from the top tray, then that is what you get -
regardless that you select 6x4, 2400 dpi, glossy photopaper from the
bottom tray.

[Bug 37985] Re: Canon PIXMA iP4000 Printing Issues

2006-06-07 Thread Joseph Seaton
I have a canon pixma ip4000 printer, and I can reproduce all of the
printouts shown - exactly the same problem. I have Dapper Drake, fully
up-to-date, on x86. Currently the printer is almost working - just a
little missing off the bottom of the page. I am using the gutenprint
drivers, 600dpi resolution, with manual image type (nb this does affect
things a little).

A solution would really be appreciated here, I've got a rather angry
user that wants to use their printer :(

Thanks ppl, Green

[Bug 34112] Re: gnome programs don't respect ~/.cups/lpoptions

2006-06-07 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Thanks for including this patch in dapper-updates.

@Dirk
Tray selection in libgnomeprint based apps should have worked before the patch
and still should work with the patch.
I can't test this since I have a printer that has only one tray. Looking at
foomatic-rip.log this should work since the option InputSlot is applied, can
somebody verify that tray selection works?
If you still have the problem you should file a seperate bug report indicating
that tray selection does not work for you specific printer model.

[Bug 48887] Zooming/Text functions cause 100% CPU Utilization & possible memory leak?

2006-06-07 Thread Jordan Erickson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dia

First time using Dia after Dapper 6.06 LTS dist-upgrade, I opened an
existing (as well as new) Dia drawing and proceeded to add a text box,
as well as zoom to 200%. After a few random tasks within the drawing, my
CPU utilization would reach 100% and stay there, causing extremely slow
system response time. Upon attempting to 'kill -9' Dia process, it would
become 'defunct'. For some reason, this would cause firefox-bin and gaim
processes to get killed due to 'Out of Memory' errors (see below).

Here are some system logs that I assume are related:

[Bug 39377] Many missing icons in default KDE menu from GNOME applications

2006-06-07 Thread Lukas Sabota
Public bug reported:

When Ubuntu and Kubuntu are installed side-by-side, their menus should work
together nicely. All icons should be visible whether you are in KDE or in
GNOME. All icons should also be in the same places. When I have a default
Kubuntu-desktop and Ubuntu-desktop, I am missing many icons in my K menu in
KDE. Some of these include:
Epiphany (although not in default install)
Beep Media Player (althought not in default install)
Serpentine Audio CD Ripper
Language Support (Which is also in TWO menu folders: settings and system)
Screensaver
System Log
System Monitor
Calculator (gnumeric)
Take screenshot
Gedit

Also, there are two misplaced entries:
Orange (from xfce) should be in accessories.
Gnome Add/Remove Programs should be in Utilities.

I am using the latest Dapper. If I can give any more information I
would love to.

[Bug 48876] gnome-session fails when "alias ls='ls --color'" in .profile

2006-06-07 Thread Spliffster
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

the summary says it all.

my .profile file looks like this:

alias rr="ssh -X 10.0.0.32 sudo";

export PATH=.:/home/spliffy/bin:/home/spliffy/bin/bpmdj-2.9:$PATH
--

my default shell is bash. when i uncomment the first line in my .profile
file then after entering user/pw in gdm, launching the gnome-session
will fail with no meaningfull error message.

the .xsession-errors looks like this
--
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat .xsession-errors
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u

[Bug 34112] Re: gnome programs don't respect ~/.cups/lpoptions

2006-06-07 Thread Dirk
So does this mean that I need to open new bugs on gimp and acroread to
reflect the fact that they use different printing mechanisms and they
don't work?

Could I politely say that: not having printing working, to the extent of
offering non-default options on dialogs and then ignoring them, not
printing landscape correctly, if some are selected - on officially
released product - strikes me as pretty show stopping bug for any
serious or commercial user!

Please could you make sure that all the various paper location
selections (eg top tray, bottom tray) work. Again, this is because
commercial users will have different papers in these trays and will want
to print on the correct one. If you want a concrete example for (a less
serious) user, I have A4 normal paper in the top tray and thick 6x4
borderless glossy photo paper in the bottom tray of a Canon IP4000.
Currently I cannot print with *any* gnome based program (including gimp)
on the bottom tray - whether I select it or not.

KDE programs - meanwhile - work flawlessly. But I don't want to use KDE.

[Bug 47301] Re: gnome-volume-manager doesn't run

Hmm, that should be a session module, not an auth module. I checked the
differences between my machine at work and the machine with problems at
home (both running Dapper) and the machine at home was indeed missing
the pam_foreground settings. This is probably because of changes I made
to enable Kerberos. Hence, this bug is invalid, and can be closed.

[Bug 48815] Gnome desktop mouse action freeze on folder drag /open

2006-06-07 Thread Lars Schöning
Public bug reported:

When dragging a folder any coming up login request will freeze the
mouses functions (except of moving the cursor) and in my experience the
advanced keyboard options. The user will have to type in the password
and accept in order to get the mouse functioning again.

Reproduce (Example)
1) Create a new ftp connection which requires password
2) Select the folder on the desktop, enter to open - don't wait till it's done
but drag the folder around.
3) When the login pops up your mouse will have lost it's function as the
pointer will still be focussed on dragging on the desktop while the actual
focus is on the window (login)

Prinz Igor: Neither GIMP nor Acroread use gnome-print. They're GTK
applications, yes, but they're not GNOME applications. GIMP uses gimp-
print and Acroread uses something else. Neither of these programs'
problems should be related to this bug (theoretically). Are the
problems only occurring after installing the patched libgnomeprint
packages?

Well, those plugins are included by default and are unusable without
that package (same goes for most of the python plugins found on the

The CommonInstallHook solution would be nice, but in the meanwhile,
can't the dependency be added? It's in main and is already required by

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

First thing I do when I switch on my laptop is open evolution to read my
e-mails, liferea to get my news feeds and epiphany to browse some
forums. Not necessarily when switching it on, but overall I usually run
these programs together.

As of now, this requires too many clicks - I have to click applications,
internet, evolution, applications, internet, liferea, applications,
internet, epiphany.

It would be so much better if middle-clicking a launcher would launch
the program, but leave the menu open. Then I would only have to click
applications, internet, evolution (middle-click), liferea (middle-
click), epiphany.

What do you think about it?

[Bug 44874] Re: auto smbfs mount in /etc/fstab causes hald hang at boot

2006-06-07 Thread fraco
After the long hald timeout (which doesn't happen every time), I seem to also
get a long wait before the desktop initializes the menu and the icons (i get
the desktop background with empty bars for the menus) (this may not be related).
After waiting for a long time, the desktop comes through. However, mounting
samba shares when referring to hostnames still doesn't work (haven't tried ip)

regards
