Having to open Evolution every time that you want to write a task down

[Bug 49691] gaim does not deactivite 'paste' command when no buffer, and executing it causes crash

2006-06-14 Thread Trent Lloyd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gaim

In a gaim conversation window, if you right click in the text area it
allows you to choose 'Paste', however if the buffer is empty, it causes
gaim to crash.

I made this mistake by selecting somethign and trying to paste PRIMARY
with right-click paste rather than a middle click, as such it could be

[Bug 49641] Missing important items in System->Administration

2006-06-14 Thread pfb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

I did not know where to file this bug---it concerns all administrtation
choices in the Gnome System->Administration toolbar that require gksu.

Working-
If /etc/group shows me as in group admin, then update-manager and the rest of
the admin programs show up when I log in.

NOT working (just started under Dapper--worked fine with Breezy and Hoary)-
If I am in group admin via NIS these do not show up. The nice thing about NIS
is that it allows us to set groups for users in one place then send all group
information (except for group root) via NIS to all other machines, but this is
now broken.

To rephrase, dapper isn't showing my administration programs in gnome
unless I am put myself in group admin in the /etc/group file of the
local machine. This worked fine under hoary and breezy.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'gnome-
admin'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

[Bug 49703] Evolution marks all my mails as junk

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution is marking all my mail from all sources as junk. I have
deactivated first the "remote tests" feature and even then it still
happens.

Furthermore, junk mail ends up tagged with the "read" flag, so I cannot

is definitely most annoying and it has lead me to several troubles at

As said debug packages are nice but have a cost, we don't want to one
for every single app using the standard mirror. App developers are
usually able to build a debug package if they need it, the question is
to know if upstream face often the situation where users send crachers
and where they would like to have a debug package to point. Note we will
try for edgy to set up a debug mirror or make debug available for
everything if possible

[Bug 49567] Re: list view doesn't expand subfolder when clicking on arrow if entry is selected

2006-06-14 Thread sblom
OK, I will try to be more precise:

I am using Dapper, nautilus in spatial mode.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open any folder with some sub- and sub-subfolders in spatial mode
2) Make sure the mode is "list view" (or whatever the exact english equivalent
of "Listenansicht" is).
3) in this view expand a folder by clicking on the arrow left to its name,
result: you see the list of folders and files contained in it
4) out of this list select a folder by clicking on its name once
5) try to expand this folder while it is selected by clicking on the
corresponding arrow. On my computer, this does not work.
6) deselect that folder by clicking somewhere else and try expanding again by
clicking on the arrow: now it does work.

this is at least inconsistent and when using the list view on deep
hierachies intensivly it gets annoying.

Hope this clarifies my problem

[Bug 49631] Copy text from a PDF document and paste it, display strange characters

2006-06-14 Thread Nicola Jelmorini
Public bug reported:

Here how to reproduce it:

1) I have created a little text file with gedit editor
2) Then I have printed it with the "Create a PDF document" option in gedit.
3) Now open the PDF document created with Evince
4) Select the text and copy
5) Return to gedit and paste the text copied out from the PDF
6) All the text is composed of strange characters. The original gedit text is
lost.

For Instance I wrote in gedit the following text:
"Text to testing PDF production"
and I have created a PDF document. I open the PDF in Evince and I select and
copy the text.
Then I paste the text into gedit again and following strange character are
displayed:
"8I\X XS XIWXMRK 4(* TVSHYGXMSR"

I attach to this post the two files (txt and pdf), so you can test if
the problem is present on your PC too.

[Bug 49607] Missing PCM volume control limits laptop sound volume

2006-06-14 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

I'm running a version of Dapper that's fully patched as of 12 June 2006
evening EST.

>From the perspective of a regular, non-super-techie user, my laptop has
a problem where the speakers, even when volume is maxed out, are too
quiet. Here's the deal:

I played a DVD on my laptop (HP dv4150, which is a variation of dv4000
model). I was using Kaffeine (xine backend) and the Gnome desktop.

I had Kaffeine's volume slider maxed, and the Gnome "Volume Applet
2.14.1" volumes maxed, but I was still thinking that the sound coming
from the laptop was too quiet to be useful.

Suspicious, I went to the command line and launcherd alsamixer. I found
that the PCM volume was low, maybe in the 60-70% range (I forget the
actual number). When I moved it up to 90-100%, the laptop's speakers
were just as loud as I wanted, and I perceived no distortion.

The problem is this: It's only because I'm a cmd-line geek that I knew
to check alsamixer. AFAIK, a regular Dapper user, of the ilk that
Canonical is trying to get to use Dapper, wouldn't have known to do this
fix. From all indications of the GUI, there are exactly two places
where volume is controlled: the application, and a system-wide volume
controlled by the Volume Applet.

[Bug 49346] Gnome mistakes window closing confirmation as frozen programme.

Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 6.06, when an application was closed by clicking on the "Close

2006-06-14 Thread Jim Tarvid
Dapper upgrade from Breezy which bombed half way through the install
phase followed by dpkg --configure -a which made the machine apparently
functional.

On a fresh install of abiword on Dapper and setting System, Preferences,
Preferred applications, Browser, Firefox, the abiword page opens as the
note above suggests.

So the problem appears to be in casual (as opposed to intentional)
desktop configuration.

[Bug 49607] Re: Missing PCM volume control limits laptop sound volume

2006-06-14 Thread Christian Convey
I'd like to suggest that this be reclassified as a bug rather than a
wishlist item. Although it's not a bug with any one particular
component involved, it is a bug in Ubuntu.

The reason I say this it that using Ubuntu as intended, my laptop is too
quiet to be useful despite the hardware being capable of adequite
volume.

I suppose this hinges on whether or not you consider it a bug that (a)
the speakers are too quiet to be uesful, and (b) the solution involves
the user running alsaconf from the cmd-line. But it seems to me that in
this regard Dapper doesn't give the intended user experience.

[Bug 49537] Re: mixer applet no longer works

2006-06-14 Thread Sebastian Dröge
Do you, for any change, use gstreamer 0.10.7 or another version than the
one from current dapper?

This looks exactly like http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344474
which was introduced with gstreamer 0.10.7 and fixed in 0.10.8

[Bug 38319] Re: patch

2006-06-14 Thread Phorque
About applying the patch:

We add/remove the appropriate lines in the C source file, restart
Nautilus and then we're good to go, or does this require a re-compile?

I don't get it. Isn't this kind of dodgy when we're using pre-compiled
binaries from deb packages?

[Bug 49550] Re: Cannot burn CDs ord DVDs using Nautilus, but works with Gnomebaker

2006-06-14 Thread Sebastian
I tested with a fresh installation of Dapper on the second Harddrive of the
same machine, the problem is still the same. So it occurs on a brand ne
installed system as well. Nautilus cdrecord does't work but gnomebaker do.
Burner is a siemens-fujitsu 4x speed CD-writer.

[Bug 38319] Re: Nautilus uses wrong icons for text files

2006-06-14 Thread Alexander Kirillov
Phorque: this patch is for developers information. Users like you and me
better wait until developers test the patch, approve it, after which
they will put updated packages in the repositories. Then you can get it
using update-manager.

Of course, experienced users can also test the patch themselves. Judging
by your question, you are not an experienced user - so better leave this
to developers.

[Bug 49714] Unable to play >1 track

2006-06-14 Thread Nicholas O'Leary
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu Dapper, I have enabled mp3 support in Rhythmbox by installing
the appropriate gstreamer packages.

I can play 1 track without issue. If I try to play another track it
fails to play and skips to the next track, which fails to play and skips
to the next track etc etc etc. Occasionally, I will hear <1second of the
track before it moves on.

Have run with the -d debug flag and am seeing the following line when I
try to play these tracks:

[0x8123890] [rb_shell_player_error] rb-shell-player.c:2214 (13:54:37):
playback error while playing: not negotiated

I have to restart RB to play another track.

This occurs for both ogg and mp3 files - not tried any other file types.

I have the full -d output available if required.
