Good day! Sorry for the long reply but I was on holidays!
Here's the output:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

[Bug 58545] mp3 plugin causes very bad sound distortion

2006-09-02 Thread saads
Public bug reported:

When playing some mp3's that have deep electronic beats I would often get very
strong distortion from my speakers or headset. The distortion would persist
even at low volume levels and even when the PCM output volume was low. I
discovered a recommendation at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1437919postcount=10

It involved removing the gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 package and making
sure that the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly package is installed. This
worked perfectly for me and others and well. Now I have absolutely no
distortion.

I would recommend removing this package unless it is essential for
playback of certain media types that cannot be handled by the ugly
package.

[Bug 27951] Re: gst0.10 doesn't play DVD/message confusing for it

2006-09-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Comment from upstream:

Can't reproduce this with up-to-date totem (1.5.92) and gst-plugins-ugly
(0.10.4).

With dvdreadsrc installed, opening a DVD iso file works just fine (totem will
pass a dvd:///path/to/foo.iso URI), without dvdreadsrc installed it will throw
an error telling you about the missing dvd handler.

gst-typefind-0.10 doesn't recognise the ISO file, but that's actually not a
problem, since totem does and prefixes the dvd:// bit, so only dvdreadsrc needs
to be able to handle this right.

If this is still a problem with current totem/gst-plugins-ugly, could you run
totem like this:

 $ GST_DEBUG=totem:5,dvdreadsrc:5  totem dvd:///path/to/file.iso  2dbg.log
 ... wait for error ...
 press control+C
 $ gzip dbg.log

and attach the dbg.log.gz file?

[Bug 58558] Places entries show twice

2006-09-02 Thread Don Scorgie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have two hard drive partition entries in the Places menu.

Both of these show up twice (as Partition and Partition (2)). Only
1 entry for each can be found in fstab. In the Computer location,
only 1 copy of each partition shows up (as Partition (2)).

Other entried in the Places menu (e.g. CD's and Computer) only show up
once. This is in Edgy.

In current edgy ac3 the problem seems to be gone. Problem is I have that
many problems with playing sound streams in xmms, banshee, ... that I
don't know whether it is due to another bug or intentional %-)

I can confirm this bug.
For me the dublicated icons are not only in the places menu of Nautilus but
also on the desktop and any other file-chooser/SaveAs-Dialog, that is why I
marked this bug as duplicate of #57701 and #57901

[Bug 58578] menu editor crashed

2006-09-02 Thread hanzo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The menu editor (the standard one) crashed shortly after I had opened it
(bevore I could do anything with it), Bugzilla stated the program could not be
identified and and sayed something about python (who seemed to be responsible
for crashing). After i quitted bugzilla gnome-panle restarted.
The only program I had running at that time was the update manager performing
an update, updating seems to have been done fine, without problems.
this is the report bugzilla sayed to attach:

[Bug 58595] Rotation when importing photos from camera

2006-09-02 Thread Vikthor
Public bug reported:

When I try to transfer the pictures from my digital camera (Canon S80), gthumb
rotates the vertical ones without changing the EXIF information.
This generates two problems:
-Probably a loss of quality in the pictures due to recompression (JPEG).
-The programs that do understand and interpretate correctly the orientation
parameter (gthumb doesn't) show the pictures with a double rotation.

Step to reproduce:
- Make a photo with the camera in vertical position.
- Transfer to hard drive with gthumb software.
- If you open it with gthumb it'll apparently display it correctly, if you use
another program, like gwenview (kde) or faststone (win32), the picture will
appear rotated.

Suggested solution:
- Don't modify the pictures when transferring them.
- Use orientation parameter (EXIF) to diplay the pictures properly.

[Bug 58598] (PATCH INCLUDED) Seeking bar jumps to zero when dragging or scrolling

2006-09-02 Thread Liu Qishuai
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When playing rmvb files in totem-xine, if I scroll the mouse, the
seeking bar jumps to zero and then jumps to the correct place. If I
scroll the mouse quickly, it may jump to the start.

Steps to reproduct:
1. Install totem-xine (apt-get install totem-xine) and some codecs.
2. Open an rmvb movie.
3. Drag the seeking bar to a place.
4. Watch the seeking bar carefully when doing step 3. It firstly jump to zero
and then jump to the correct place.
5. Scroll the mouse quickly. It will probably jump to start of the movie. This
should not happen.

Apply this patch to solve the bug:

2) ok it's mmsh, so I have to install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, which
contains a package that supports mssh.
ERROR: there is no codec to play this file
DEBUG: don't know how to handle video/x-ms-asf

3) I know it's a .asf file so I decided to install w32codecs (I think
the codec is here). since there is no package in repositories I used a
previously downloaded one (fond in RestrictedFormats wiki page)
w32codecs_20060611-1plf1_i386.deb which installs all the plugins in
/usr/lib/codecs
as you told me gstreamer0.10-pitfdll is required to handle w32codecs,
so I installed it, but the error continues, as if w32codecs package
does not contain any package to handle video/x-ms-asf

4) the package which unblock the error is gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly,
but I get no video and no audio.
NO ERROR: DEBUG MESSAGE: DMO dll supports VO Optimizations 0 1

(note that this package is not enough to unblock the error, I tried to
uninstall pitfdll+w32codecs to see what would have happened and totem
gived me a debug message:
don't know how to handle video/x-wma .. some values ... don't know how
to handle video/x-wmv ... )

5) I installed the multiverse and ffmpeg plugins but the situation is
the same. I'm wondering how did I get in my last configuration the
audio working!!

this is the list of packages installed (only gstreamer) at the end of the tests:
gstreamer0.10-alsa

note that the problems do NOT appear anymore if I use compiz. this might
be related to offscreen pixmaps, and compiz disabling them -i think i

[Bug 6290] Re: use /dev/video1394, not /dev/raw1394

2006-09-02 Thread Stefan Richter
A note on /dev/raw1394's security implications:

1. You cannot access local memory through raw1394, except for ROMs and
CSRs that are exposed to other nodes any way.

2. It is extremely hard to manipulate data on attached SBP-2 devices
(FireWire storage devices).

3. You can disturb operation of the FireWire bus, e.g. creating a DoS
situation for audio/video applications, for SBP-2 devices, or eth1394
network interfaces.

4. If another PC is attached to the FireWire bus, it may be possible to
read or overwrite the entire RAM of that remote PC. This depends on the
PC's configuration. Most FireWire controllers support this feature (yes,
it's not a bug, or at least wasn't intended to be one...) but not all
OSs enable the feature.

This feature is called physical DMA and is enabled by Linux' ohci1394 driver
per default. It speeds up SBP-2. Linux' sbp2 driver does not work correctly
without physical DMA at the moment. Some slides:
http://md.hudora.de/presentations/#firewire-pacsec
http://md.hudora.de/presentations/#firewire-21c3

Jody McIntyre's plans to improve raw1394's security:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.firewire.devel/6395/focus=6395
Neither Jody nor anybody else got around to implement these ideas yet.

I hope to get sbp2 to work correctly (if slowly) without physical DMA
too. Furthermore I am thinking about implementing filtered physical DMA
for SBP-2.

Jouni,

I think you maybe confusing matters.

I think the initial reporter and myself are talking about sending jobs
to network printers using the IPP protocol.

I have a printer connect via parallel and ethernet to my dapper machine.
The parallel port queue works perfectly, the other queue (ipp via
ethernet to the printer) jobs never complete.

2006-09-02 Thread Stefan Richter
Except if you don't load ohci1394 or load ohci1394 with the parameter
phys_dma=0. Switching physical DMA off will work fine with raw1394,
dv1394, video1394... It will just break sbp2 until I get
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6393 fixed. (It's not high on
my list, and it is a nuisance to implement in an platform independent
way.) I don't know if eth1394 works without physical DMA..
