[Bug 60022] Re: [edgy] Number of workspaces / desktops reduced to 2
Hmm. It appears that it's not just if I boot to an older kernel. The desktops have returned (with the right names) in any kernel (unsurprising really). Looks like if you upgrade to edgy you drop to two desktops, if you then increase the number up again, then restart x it gives your desktops the old names they had. Less of an issue, but still an issue IMO. -- [edgy] Number of workspaces / desktops reduced to 2 https://launchpad.net/bugs/60022 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 60022] Re: [edgy] Number of workspaces / desktops reduced to 2
Ok. When I posted my first comment https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/60022/comments/2 I was mistaken because I have two edgy machines. One *has* four desktops I named myself as "Dev | Web | Mail | IRC". I upgraded a *different* machine however. That one now only has two workspaces and they are named "Desk 1" and "Desk 2". I realised my mistake and posted https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/60022/comments/3 . However I have now upgraded the first machine that had four desktops and it has indeed dropped to two. So I have lost the two workspaces and their repective labels. If I choose 'preferences' from the context menu for the workspace switcher I can of course increase the number - but they get the names "workspace 3" "workspace 4". So my point kinda still stands. The number of workspaces I had was set at four and they had names, now there's two and the names of my others have been lost. My current production laptop which is still running dapper has 8 desktops in use all day. So when I upgrade to edgy (in the current state) I will lose 6 of them and the names will be gone. Yeah, minor thing of course, I can add them back in. But I don't think I should have to. Just because the developer thinks 2 workspaces is enough shouldn't force me to use 2 after an upgrade when I had a different number before hand? There is also the inconsistency that on one machine the workspaces are called "Desk 1" and "Desk 2" yet on my other machine when I increase the number of workspaces they're called "Workspace 3" and "Workspace 4". Hope that all makes some kind of sense. -- [edgy] Number of workspaces / desktops reduced to 2 https://launchpad.net/bugs/60022 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 44874] Re: auto smbfs mount in /etc/fstab causes hald hang at boot
Same here. When the samba share is auto mounted in /etc/fstab, HAL fails to initialise, the desktop is stalled for a couple of minutes. Then the desktop appears, and the samba share gets mounted. When doing lshal immediately in a terminal I got a message saying that HAL could not be connected to, either it was not running or not ready. After a couple of minutes trying lshal again shows me 94 entries from the global list. In other words, HAL seems stalled itself, waiting (too) long for samba to finish (even though it has nothing to do with samba I feel but it is in fstab the share is mounted so...). The work around, putting noauto in the fstab and after the desktop appears, mounting the share by hand seems to do it... for now. Let someone please take a look at this... Duh. I have automatic login enabled. I always forget about that... [Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver
As a relatively new Ubuntu user, I am befuddled as to why this is even an issue. As has been stated time and time again, many (if not most) screensavers are useless without config options. I need to be able to configure how many cows, what my text says, what pictures to show...it's stupid to say that obviously, GNOME users would rather muddle around with config files than have a GUI. I like to call myself a geek, but I'm not opposed to a GUI - If it's so obvious that config files are the way to go, why even have gnome-screensaver? Why not just have the user find a list of screensavers and specify that in a config file? And why even have GNOME? Obviously, it would be better just to do everything from terminal, since we are so opposed to GUI's. It's ridiculous. If I read the way-above linked FAQ...I have to create or find a whole theme to change my preferences? Ugh! If this is typical, I see why Torvalds was so anti-GNOME (http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/12/13/1340215). When I first read that, I thought "that's crazy. No one could be that stupid." Well...I'd say, if Windoze XP (drives me nuts because I can't configure anything) has the option for something, GNOME can definitely support it. -- no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver https://launchpad.net/bugs/22007 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 56452] Re: Edgy: at-spi Crashes frequently
Hi Daniel. Please forgive my ignorance/newbieness but The page you link to has you do the following: 1. Start GDB and attach it to the process that crashes 2. Continue the process 3. **When the process crashes** retrieve a backtrack of the crash The problem I'm having is that the process doesn't crash **until I reboot**. It just keeps running. Therefore, I do not see how I can use this method to obtain the backtrace. I did try rebooting into single-user mode figuring that I could do the above and then launch X and hopefully get a backtrace that way. But it seems that at-spi-registryd doesn't get a PID until you launch GDM -- and by that point the crash has taken place. The page you link to links to "Another useful how-to". Bug Buddy never appears with the at-spi crash, so I'm looking at "Obtaining a stack trace using just GDB." The section "Obtaining a stack trace for an applet using just GDB" seems to be the relevant one. I have tried the procedure outlined there (using /usr/lib/at-spi/at-spi-registryd). All that does is cause at-spi-registryd to run and exit. Nothing crashes. So what am I missing/doing wrong? I do want to help by getting a backtrace, but I'm afraid I'm going to need more explicit directions. My apologies, and thanks much in advance for your help. -- Edgy: at-spi Crashes frequently https://launchpad.net/bugs/56452 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 60095] PGN files detected as text/plain not application/x-chess-pgn
Public bug reported: Nautilus does not correctly identify PGN (portable game notation) files. [Bug 56452] Re: Edgy: at-spi Crashes frequently
*For me*, the crash nearly always appears on reboot and not before. Logging out and back in is not sufficient -- which rules out live CD replication. All I have to do is launch Orca, quit Orca, and reboot. I can reproduce this 100% of the time on all three of my Edgy boxes. I'd get a backtrace if I could, but I'm not sure how I'd go about doing so given that the crash occurs on reboot. But I'm quite new to all of this. Therefore, if there's a way to pull the backtrace off under these conditions, do please let me know how, and I shall do it. In terms of trying it with a new user: Under installed Edgy i386, latest updates, Orca from CVS HEAD, Fonix DECtalk installed: 1. Create a new user -- give the new user permission to administer the system (so that the crash report icon appears upon reboot). Leave all other settings alone. 2. Log in as the new user 3. Run Orca and go through the setup process 4. Log out, then back in 5. Launch Orca 6. Quit Orca 7. Reboot and log back in as new user Crash report icon appears. -- Edgy: at-spi Crashes frequently https://launchpad.net/bugs/56452 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
