Hi Sebastien, thanks for your answer.

libglib2.0-0-dbg installation went ok, but
libgnomevfs2-0-dbg didn't:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get install libgnomevfs2-0-dbg

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean
that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using
the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet
been created

Since you only requested a single operation it is
extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report
against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the
situation:

[Bug 60174] control which popups appear

2006-09-12 Thread sardion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: notification-daemon

wishlist: it would be nice if one could control which popups do/do not
appear in the notification area (for instance, i would like to not see
"connected to wireless network " every time i log in to my machine).
currently some applets let you do this themselves (i.e. gnome-power-
manager). would be nice to have a central place for these settings.

[Bug 26023] Re: Can't change font size for printing messages in evolution, and default size is too large

Yep. Evolution. I have this exact same problem with font size when
printing. It was INSANELY large on printed paper. I have to tape the
paper on the wall and read it from a comfort distance (literally).

There are quite few threads on this issue at ubuntuforums. Thus, it has
been NOT resolved for a long time. Past due.

[Bug 60157] breezy hal missing a patch needed to work with 2.6.18 kernel

2006-09-12 Thread Jody Belka
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

The version of hal in breezy (0.5.3) is missing a patch that is needed
for hald to run on a 2.6.18 kernel. It fixes a bug in how hald deals
with the sysfs tree. Without it, a change in 2.6.18 results in hald
failing to start up successfully. The patch has been in hal for a long
time now (since November 2005), and i've verified that adding it to
0.5.3-0ubuntu14 gets things working again.

[Bug 34435] Re: Cairo and ATI RENDER extension cause scrambled buttons in UbuntuLooks

2006-09-12 Thread Dave Airlie
No, it disables the hardware accelerated repeat case for render (you
can't do this config options) it leaves the more-used blend case
alone, I'm sure we might get this fixed for Xorg 7.2 if we get the
chance, but the safest thing for dapper is just to fallback to software
rendering for the repeat case.

[Bug 60022] Re: [edgy] Number of workspaces / desktops reduced to 2

2006-09-12 Thread Alan Pope
Hmm. It appears that it's not just if I boot to an older kernel. The
desktops have returned (with the right names) in any kernel
(unsurprising really).

Looks like if you upgrade to edgy you drop to two desktops, if you then
increase the number up again, then restart x it gives your desktops the
old names they had. Less of an issue, but still an issue IMO.

[Bug 60022] Re: [edgy] Number of workspaces / desktops reduced to 2

2006-09-12 Thread Alan Pope
Ok. When I posted my first comment
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/60022/comments/2
I was mistaken because I have two edgy machines. One *has* four desktops
I named myself as "Dev | Web | Mail | IRC". I upgraded a *different*
machine however. That one now only has two workspaces and they are named
"Desk 1" and "Desk 2".

I realised my mistake and posted
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/60022/comments/3
.

However I have now upgraded the first machine that had four desktops and
it has indeed dropped to two. So I have lost the two workspaces and
their repective labels. If I choose 'preferences' from the context menu
for the workspace switcher I can of course increase the number - but
they get the names "workspace 3" "workspace 4".

So my point kinda still stands. The number of workspaces I had was set
at four and they had names, now there's two and the names of my others
have been lost.

My current production laptop which is still running dapper has 8
desktops in use all day. So when I upgrade to edgy (in the current
state) I will lose 6 of them and the names will be gone. Yeah, minor
thing of course, I can add them back in. But I don't think I should have
to. Just because the developer thinks 2 workspaces is enough shouldn't
force me to use 2 after an upgrade when I had a different number before
hand?

There is also the inconsistency that on one machine the workspaces are
called "Desk 1" and "Desk 2" yet on my other machine when I increase the
number of workspaces they're called "Workspace 3" and "Workspace 4".

Hope that all makes some kind of sense.

[Bug 44874] Re: auto smbfs mount in /etc/fstab causes hald hang at boot

2006-09-12 Thread Azalin
Same here. When the samba share is auto mounted in /etc/fstab, HAL fails to
initialise, the desktop is stalled for a couple of minutes. Then the desktop
appears, and the samba share gets mounted. When doing lshal immediately in a
terminal I got a message saying that HAL could not be connected to, either it
was not running or not ready. After a couple of minutes trying lshal again
shows me 94 entries from the global list. In other words, HAL seems stalled
itself, waiting (too) long for samba to finish (even though it has nothing to
do with samba I feel but it is in fstab the share is mounted so...).
The work around, putting noauto in the fstab and after the desktop appears,
mounting the share by hand seems to do it... for now.
Let someone please take a look at this...

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

If you try to end a system process such as cron, syslogd, cupsd, etc.

[Bug 56452] Re: Edgy: at-spi Crashes frequently

2006-09-12 Thread Joanie
Duh. I have automatic login enabled. I always forget about that... I
just disabled it and tried again.

*Without accessible login enabled*, the at-spi-registryd process does
not yet exist when I do as you suggest.

*With accessible login enabled*, the first thing I see (before I can log
in) is a dialog stating, "The greeter application appears to be
crashing. Attempting to use a different one." Does that mean that at-
spi-registryd has already crashed??? Regardless, I then tried to attach
to each of the 2 at-spi-registryd processes that exist at that point and
log in. Neither of those processes crashed, but I once again had the
crash report icon in the notification area -- which leads me to believe
that at-spi-registryd crashed as soon as gdm attempted to present the
login dialog.

Thanks for your help!! If you have other things you'd like me to try,
just let me know.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2006-09-12 Thread 5of0
As a relatively new Ubuntu user, I am befuddled as to why this is even an
issue. As has been stated time and time again, many (if not most) screensavers
are useless without config options.
I need to be able to configure how many cows, what my text says, what pictures
to show...it's stupid to say that obviously, GNOME users would rather muddle
around with config files than have a GUI. I like to call myself a geek, but
I'm not opposed to a GUI - If it's so obvious that config files are the way to
go, why even have gnome-screensaver? Why not just have the user find a list of
screensavers and specify that in a config file? And why even have GNOME?
Obviously, it would be better just to do everything from terminal, since we are
so opposed to GUI's.
It's ridiculous. If I read the way-above linked FAQ...I have to create or find
a whole theme to change my preferences? Ugh! If this is typical, I see why
Torvalds was so anti-GNOME
(http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/12/13/1340215). When I first read
that, I thought "that's crazy. No one could be that stupid." Well...I'd say,
if Windoze XP (drives me nuts because I can't configure anything) has the
option for something, GNOME can definitely support it.

[Bug 56452] Re: Edgy: at-spi Crashes frequently

2006-09-12 Thread Joanie
Hi Daniel. Please forgive my ignorance/newbieness but

The page you link to has you do the following:
1. Start GDB and attach it to the process that crashes
2. Continue the process
3. **When the process crashes** retrieve a backtrack of the crash

The problem I'm having is that the process doesn't crash **until I
reboot**. It just keeps running. Therefore, I do not see how I can use
this method to obtain the backtrace.

I did try rebooting into single-user mode figuring that I could do the
above and then launch X and hopefully get a backtrace that way. But it
seems that at-spi-registryd doesn't get a PID until you launch GDM --
and by that point the crash has taken place.

The page you link to links to "Another useful how-to". Bug Buddy never
appears with the at-spi crash, so I'm looking at "Obtaining a stack
trace using just GDB." The section "Obtaining a stack trace for an
applet using just GDB" seems to be the relevant one. I have tried the
procedure outlined there (using /usr/lib/at-spi/at-spi-registryd). All
that does is cause at-spi-registryd to run and exit. Nothing crashes.

So what am I missing/doing wrong?

I do want to help by getting a backtrace, but I'm afraid I'm going to
need more explicit directions. My apologies, and thanks much in advance
for your help.

[Bug 60095] PGN files detected as text/plain not application/x-chess-pgn

2006-09-12 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

Nautilus does not correctly identify PGN (portable game notation) files.

To reproduce save the following as foo.pgn:

[Event "Local chess game"]
[Site "?"]
[Date ".??.??"]
[Round "?"]
[White "White"]
[Black "Black"]
[Result "*"]

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Na6 3. Bb5+ *

Browsing with Nautilus will display a thumbnail of the text of the file
and right-clicking to get the file properties will show the MIME type as
text/plain.

However /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml has an entry for .pgn
files:

PGN chess game

If you edit this file and add after
running update-mime-database then nautilus identifies correctly.

Now, I am unsure if this is a bug in shared-mime-info or nautilus or
both. PGN is a sub-type of text/plain, however there is nothing
ambiguous about the .pgn glob matching.

I am using Ubuntu Dapper (nautilus 2.14.3-0ubuntu1, shared-mime-info

[Bug 60000] Re: Deskbar applet crashed

2006-09-12 Thread Daniel Holbach
Thanks for your bug report. Which version of deskbar-applet was that? Do
you remember what you were trying to do with deskbar-applet or did it
just crash at startup?

[Bug 56452] Re: Edgy: at-spi Crashes frequently

2006-09-12 Thread Joanie
*For me*, the crash nearly always appears on reboot and not before.
Logging out and back in is not sufficient -- which rules out live CD
replication. All I have to do is launch Orca, quit Orca, and reboot.
I can reproduce this 100% of the time on all three of my Edgy boxes.
I'd get a backtrace if I could, but I'm not sure how I'd go about doing
so given that the crash occurs on reboot. But I'm quite new to all of
this. Therefore, if there's a way to pull the backtrace off under these
conditions, do please let me know how, and I shall do it.

In terms of trying it with a new user:

Under installed Edgy i386, latest updates, Orca from CVS HEAD, Fonix
DECtalk installed:

1. Create a new user -- give the new user permission to administer the system
(so that the crash report icon appears upon reboot). Leave all other settings
alone.
2. Log in as the new user
3. Run Orca and go through the setup process
4. Log out, then back in
5. Launch Orca
6. Quit Orca
7. Reboot and log back in as new user

Crash report icon appears.

[Bug 38403] Re: wrong size fonts used in firefox GUI

2006-09-12 Thread Xavier
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 19524 ***

I assume this was using firefox 1.5 , which is using 96 dpi by default ?
In this case, you need to either tell firefox to use 120 dpi, or tell it to use
system defaults.

The behavior has changed with firefox 2.0b1 which uses a minimum dpi of 96 by
default.
So if you set gnome dpi to 120, firefox will also use that, and you should get
the same font size.

[Bug 60078] Re: [Edgy] Crash when accessing menu item on "Places" menu

2006-09-12 Thread mlind
Ah, sorry. I though all necessary version numbers were in the backtrace.

Edgy Knot 2
Architecture: i386
Version: 2.16.0-0ubuntu2

I haven't yet found a way to reliably reproduce this.
