[Bug 60157] Re: breezy hal missing a patch needed to work with 2.6.18 kernel
You will probably find several other things in Breezy that do not work with 2.6.18. 2.6.15 had a completely overhauled hotplug architecture, thus needs a matching udev, etc. pp. This patch is not the type of thing we fix in stable releases, since it is not a high-impact/data- loss/security bug, nor can it be guaranteed that the patch does not induce any regressions when using the standard breezy kernel. [Bug 60022] Re: [edgy] Number of workspaces / desktops reduced to 2
Your comments are confusing. First the way gconf works, the schemas apply if you have no user setting, it only sets a default value to use if there is no custom value yet. On your box with 8 desktops their is no reason the number of workspaces should change, the user settings are respected. The only upgrade case issue is if you never played with the number of workspaces and then don't have an user key for it. About the naming, those are to gconf key too so your custom names should not be dropped and you should get your custom names again if you set the number of workspaces to 4 by example The linux version has nothing to do with the desktop and gconf, the comments about using an older version are not revelant to that bug -- [edgy] Number of workspaces / desktops reduced to 2 https://launchpad.net/bugs/60022 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 60186] The burner cannot burn CD's and does not show speeds under 16x
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner Steps to reproduce on my system: 1. Install a 4x-12x CD RW disc into the CD RW drive. 2. Launch the GNOME CD/DVD burner (for burning a data CD). 3. Copy some data into the burner. 4. Start writing the CD by clicking the write button in the burner. Select the maximum supported speed in the dialog. Expected results: The burner shall burn the CD without errors. Actual results: Bugs: 1. The dialog that is shown after pressing the write button does not show speeds under 16x. 2. The buttons in the dialog for writing are initially coloured dark brown. When I move mouse over the buttons they get coloured normally. 3. Public bug reported: I would just like to draw attention to two issues with thumbnails being created without frames and/or cropped if source image is portrait. This is more of an aesthetic issue than anything major. When browsing directories in Nautilus in list view at any given view %, in my case the default 50%: 1) Some thumbnails are created without frames, this seems dependent on the file-type from my experience, for instance .jpg, .png seems to receive frames in nautilus (which look very nice imo) but, for instance, .psd files do not receive frames. 2) If an image is portrait, i.e. height is greater than width, then they seem to be cropped, such that the bottom of the thumbnail is hidden beneath the next list line in nautilus. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Nautilus thumnails - Not all thumbnails are created equal https://launchpad.net/bugs/59741 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 19524] Re: Firefox does not pay attention to GNOME DPI setting, nor work with its own setting
I don't think bug 33055 is a duplicate, as I said on it. bug 34211 and bug 38403 are, and they should be fixed in edgy, with its current firefox (I've no clue if a newer firefox version will get it, and if it'll change something about dpi). However bug 20116 show that they are actually some users who want a dpi lower than 96. [Bug 59333] Re: gaim window size unrestricted
If a user makes a decision to resize a window such that part of a menu is hidden, why should I, the developer, prevent him? Who am I to say that the "Help" menu _must_ be seen? Perhaps that user never uses the menu, and so does not see any loss. I know I don't use the Help menu on any application 90% of the time. So, yes, I am saying that the user should be able to resize a window such that widgets (and therefore features) are hidden from view. Once I make that stipulation, putting an absolute limit on how small a window can get is clearly an impossible task. How small is "too small"? 75% of the window? 50%? what about the buddy list, where its vertical height could be reasonably resized to show only a single buddy entry. Add to that, the fact that a single buddy entry might be one of two sizes. How do I compute "too small"? I think that users should be expected to exercise a little bit of responsibility here. IF they resize a window "too small," I would expect them to immediately increase its size. If they need a feature, I expect them to not hide it from view when they resize the window. Consistency is certainly of importance. But I don't agree that consistency is a sufficient excuse to repeat the mistakes other programmers are making in many cases. Here I still see no compelling reason to place an arbitrary restriction on what you can decide to do with your use of gaim. If gaim claimed to be part of GNOME, it might be a different story. GNOME makes specific promises to users about how applications will behave, as outlined in their HIG and other documents. Failure to follow the GNOME HIG is a bug - for GNOME applications. Gaim is not however, and so what, exactly, we are supposed to be consistent with is far less certain, far less clear-cut. In many cases, true consistency is clearly impossible. Gaim runs in GNOME, in KDE, in pretty much any X11 environment with any or no window manager or desktop environment. It also runs in Windows, and in OSX. the behavior of windows in these diverse environments can differ quite drastically. For that reason, most arguments for "consistency" fail to convince. They tend to boil down to "prefer my environment and my use patterns, who cares about anyone else." Any such decision often increases consistency with one environment only at the expense of consistency with some other environment. -- gaim window size unrestricted https://launchpad.net/bugs/59333 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 59011] gparted moves to backgroud, leads to a stuck install
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity-frontend-gtk Note: I tried this on Knot 1, am downloading Knot 2 right now to see if this persists. The problem is when you choose to manually edit the partition table in the installer, and you click on 'Next' -- the window that is the confirmation window for gparted is not brought to the front (it remains behind the installer's main window). Thus, to the user, it appears the computer has frozen/stuck/is not responsive. What makes this problem worse, is that the gparted confirmation window in the background has focus, so even if you try to click on the main installer window, nothing happens. Eventually, (after a few clicks) the installer crashes with an error. To avoid this error, after you click Next on the installer window, you must move the window down, click Apply on the gparted Window, then click close before the main installer window moves to the next step. However, another problem creeps up. The installer doesn't read the new partition layout! You must then quit the installer, restart it again, click 'Manually edit' on the partition step, then click Next (with no changes to the disk layout) and then it will detect the correct partition table and you can move along. ** Affects: gparted (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- gparted moves to backgroud, leads to a stuck install https://launchpad.net/bugs/59011 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 59333] Re: gaim window size unrestricted
I'm in agreement with Luke here. My buddy list is currently not wide enough to display all of "Help", but I don't care. I want it that size. If I were using the German translation, I'd probably cut off half the menu. Who cares? I think we'd all agree that sizing the window so that you can't see any of the buddy list widgets is "unreasonable". Perhaps we'd all agree on some size that's "reasonable". But still, why should we bother to write, debug, and maintain code to stop the user from doing something that's 1) stupid (or, if you prefer, "unreasonable"), 2) what they requested, and 3) easy to undo with no harmful effects? In any case, this sounds like a "hypothetical" bug. We try to avoid addressing bugs unless it's a real problem for the submitter personally. This 1) saves us time, 2) helps us better resolve bugs. When someone is just speculating, they don't have as good of a view as someone who is actually affected by it. This is the same idea as the legal concept of "standing". Now, this isn't a hard and fast rule. I'd also like to quickly counter a couple of your other points about unreasonably small windows: "unrecognizable" - If you have a task bar, you can still click the tiny title bar (in the absolute worst case) that's left, and see from the task bar which window is selected. "cosmetic bugs" - I don't think these are a huge problem, given that the user has done something unreasonable. However, if they bother you, they can be filed as bug reports on the appropriate software and fixed. -- gaim window size unrestricted https://launchpad.net/bugs/59333 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
