[Bug 48289] Re: Gnome desktop screen is offset to the right by 1/2 Icon

Oops, you're right, xorg.conf is in /etc/X11. I'm asking myself why I
wrote /etc/init.d ;)

Anyway, you could try to follow

adjust your screen resolution.

[Bug 59045] edgy desktop/liveCD Trashcan does not work

2006-09-27 Thread Chip Piller
Public bug reported:

I tested the September 5, 2006 release of the edgy i386 desktop CD and
ran it as a liveCD. The Trash icon in the lower right corner of the
desktop always says it's empty, even when it is not empty.

Files dropped into the trashcan will go into the ~/.Trash directory as
expected and can be removed manually. The Trash file browser shows that
it is empty even when it is not, and it does not allow one to empty the
trash (that option is grayed out).

[Bug 61706] Re: HAL error after return out of hibernation

2006-09-27 Thread teardrop_onthefire
I'm afraid to say, trouble is back and worse. I can only see this problem as
the cause.
-Since hibenation worked I continued using it, untill the last time, the error
message returned.
Since all progrmams worked I ignored it.
I did a liitle work, even changing users showed no problems.
But then I logged back into my own account, I by just pointing the mouse at the
clock applet made it crash. While trying to send an error report X crashed, I
tried to reboot, but mouting of hda1 with the root dir failed, fsck automatic
failed. I ran fsck manualy with the option -v.
All bad inodes fixed, the system runs normal again (even a bit faster as
before).
I'm never hibernating the system again !

For some reason the problem has gone away. I suspect that this may have

[Bug 61050] [Edgy] Knot-3 Live CD sets up keyboard in English instead of Spanish

2006-09-27 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot from Knot-3 Live CD (desktop CD)
2. Press F2 and select "Spanish - Español"
3. Press F3 to make sure keyboard "Spanish - Español" is selected (this step is
optional).
4. Start Ubuntu.
5. Go into GNOME, and the keyboard is in English instead of Spanish (no dead
keys, no ñ, ç, ¿, ¡ keys, and so on...).
6. If you go to System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Preferences, into the
"Layout" tab, you can see that "English" is the only layout selected. If you
remove the English layout and add the Spain layout, then the keyboard works
perfectly in Spanish.

This problem is NOT in other Live CD releases (Dapper, Breezy, Hoary and
Warty).

[Bug 48289] Re: Gnome desktop screen is offset to the right by 1/2 Icon

2006-09-27 Thread Martins
To Start, i'm now running Edgy. And xorg.conf was in /etc/X11, not
/etc/init.d.

Luca,

I just tried your fix, but X failed to start, probably because of a
syntax error. However, for some reason, my backup copy of xorg.conf
failed to be saved, and I didn't realize it until I had removed my
modified version. Disaster, you say? No! Ubuntu must have a fail-safe
backup file somewhere, and gnome starts up anyway -- only now the screen
offset is gone!

The response is much slower, so the radeon driver probably isn't being
loaded. Also, when I use the system/preferences menu to change the
resolution, it doesn't work. I think that I can live with this until
edgy is released, then I'll re-install and get the xorg.conf file back
that way.

Just my $.02. I've been in "discussion" with the developer
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316654) on and off for close
to a year on this.

And his rather odd position continues to be "any screensaver theme that
requires configuration is inherently broken."

Recently he suggested someone else fix his work. An Ubuntu user I was
hoping I could persuade someone at Ubuntu to do just that.

[Bug 36846] Re: The filesystem type of a volume is identified incorrectly.

2006-09-27 Thread Tormod Volden
A way to "fix" the partition, so that it doesn't get detected as a
msdos/vfat partition, is to take away the msdos magic:

 echo "T" | sudo dd of=/dev/hda5 seek=510 count=1 bs=1

(where hda5 is the misdetected partition of course)

If you for any reason would like the msdos magic back:

 echo "U" | sudo dd of=/dev/hda5 seek=510 count=1 bs=1

The origin of the problem is that the libvolume.c checks for a vfat
partition (and is happy with the magic match) before it checks for e.g.
a ext2/3 partition.

[Bug 31286] Re: Displays repeated keyring dialogs on resume from suspend

2006-09-27 Thread Gabriel Bauman
I am affected by this when first logging into GNOME after a fresh boot.
As soon as the desktop appears I get two (sometimes three) overlapping
'Unlock keyring' dialog boxes. I have to cancel them both and manually
select my network, after which the unlock dialog reappears (once this
time) and then everything works fine.

I only get this on resume when the machine has been suspended or
hibernated long enough for the gnome-keyring session to have expired.

I'm on a Dell Latitude D620 with the ipw3945 chipset, and an up-to-date
Dapper.

[Bug 48289] Gnome desktop screen is offset to the right by 1/2 Icon

2006-09-27 Thread Martins
Public bug reported:

After logging in the ntire desktop screen is at the right resolution but
offset to the right by about half an Icon. There is a dark stripe along
the left and the trash can is half way off to the right.

When you change the resolution to another supported value, say, 800X600
and then choose the "use previous resolution" button. the screen comes
back properly centered with everything visible. Sometimes the screen
corrects itself when comimg back on after the screen saver.

This behaviour happens in Suse 10.0 and 10.1 also.

The resolution I'm using is 1280 X1024
I have an HP Pavilion760n with an ATI radeon all-in-wonder 7500 and Princeton
VL1916 LCD
monitor running on the DVI connector

I haven't tried the 3d acceleration or the tv functionality yet.

My Laptop, an Averatec 6110 with a resolution of 1280 X 800 doesn't do
this. I did an online upgrade from Breezy to Dapper on that machine that
went flawlessly.

[Bug 62660] File Chooser: changing the path in the location bar does not update list view

2006-09-27 Thread Amos Brocco
Public bug reported:

(problem in edgy)

In the file chooser, changing the location using the location/address bar does
not update
the list.

for example, if I want to select a file located in /usr/lib/jvm :

- with the old (dapper) file dialog I would
press CTRL+L, type /usr/lib/jvm, press Enter (the list view gets updated to the
path I've chosen) and then choose the file by browsing the list.

- with the new (edgy) file dialog, if I type /usr/lib/jvm in the address
bar and then press Enter, the open button gets clicked (so to open the
file, without entering the whole path including the filename in the
address bar, I'm forced to navigate in the file list)

I observed the same behavior today but I just updated a lot of packages

O.k., but it is not the same problem. My problem is, when installing
Ubuntu 6.06 in the only drive I have. The drive is recognized, but
partitions not. These are my partitios on an IBM-HITACHI 80gb:

1) FAT 16 - primary
2) Extended with: fat32,ext3,swap,ext3

The only partition recognized is FAT 16, and gparted says it is a 80 gb.
partition (the hole disk). Cfdisk and every other program (except
Qtparted), recognize partitions o.k.
Gparted and Qtparted uses parted libs, so it seems the problem is parted
libs...
As I can't use another program during installation, I simply can't
install Ubuntu. Maybe I should contact libparted developers...

2006-09-27 Thread Bernat Tallaferro

/media/debian/etch  -> ext3 partition

/media/windows/D -> vfat partition with label DATA

which show up in Nautilus' Places as follows:

ubuntu/breezy
debian/etch
WINXP
DATA

ok so I guess all I said is either wrong or not understandable, which in both
case is a waste of time. I will still have a last try :
I believe it works fine when you increase Xft dpi (like setting it to 120), but
not when you decrease it (eg 85).
If you _really_ want firefox to work at smaller dpi than 96, you need to set

[Bug 62649] Message window hangs in Evolution

2006-09-27 Thread Robert Persson
Public bug reported:

This bug is with Evolution 2.6.1 in Dapper.

On a few occasions I have found that the message display window has
frozen, even though other parts of Evolution appear to be working. In
other words I can select other messages in the message list, or go to
other folders and select messages there. And if the messages are unread
they will be marked as read when I select them. However the message
window will appear to be stuck on the same message and won't move.

Last time it happened I tried to close Evolution from the file menu, but
all that happened was that the Evolution main window (the only one I had
open at the time) got greyed out yet would not close. Clicking on the
window manager close-window button did not work either. However running
"evolution --force-shutdown" did work and the window finally closed.

[Bug 62642] files deleted from usb storage devices mishandled

2006-09-27 Thread muszek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When user "deletes" file(s) from a USB storage device (such as an mp3 player or
pendrive), they're moved to /media/$devicename/.Trash-$username and the space
is not freed. Problems:
1. user experiences a shrinking space on the device (because those files are
not really deleted).
2. those files do not appear in Gnome's Trash utility and can't be deleted via
it.
3. nautilus doesn't show hidden folders by default, so user can't see
.Trash-$username

It should be handled differently. Possible solutions:
1. Files are deleted permamenly from USB devices.
2. While nautilus shows contents of USB devices, it also shows hidden folders.
3. Gnome's Trash utility also checks for .Trash-$username of USB devices.

[Bug 18284] Option to use blank screen automatically in stead of selected screensavers when laptop is battery

2006-09-27 Thread Pander
Public bug reported:

Extend the settings for xscreensaver-gnome so that when laptop is plugged into
power outlet it will cycle through the selected screensavers as normal. However,
when the laptop is running on battery it should automatically just use the blank
screen so that the system can run longer onits battery.

Perhaps also include this feature (request of implementation) in
kscreensaver.

[Bug 61973] Re: GParted sees only one disk

This happened to me also. I have confirmed it is a problem with Edgy and not
GParted here:

A workaround is to specify the drives manually.

[Bug 62633] Only First Hard Drive Accessible

2006-09-27 Thread Jeff Greene
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

I am using the latest version of Edgy and GParted only detects my first hard
drive. It was detected in Dapper and using the livecd for GParted. The only
workaround that I know of is to manually run GParted with the hard drives
specified.
(For instance: gparted /dev/sda /dev/sdb)

I compiled the latest version of GParted and tried it again in Edgy, but
it still did not work.

I had reported this bug to GParted earlier, but found that it is a problem with
Edgy itself. You can refer to the bug report here:

[Bug 53132] [time-admin] We need a GUI to enable/disable utc

2006-09-27 Thread x
Public bug reported:

Currently utc is causing people problems as they might not understand
what it does if enabled during the installation and they want to change
the setting later when they experience problems.

Example of such problem is when user has a dualboot machine, where
Windows and Linux are in different time, because utc is enabled. ( I
recently fixed such problem myself. )

Obvious place to look for such setting is the date & time settings, so
we should add there an option where utc could be enabled or disabled.
