[Bug 70535] Re: Nautilus copy to USB hard drive crashed

Workaround: Divide files > 4GB with 'split', then copy the pieces, then
join them again with 'cat'.

[Bug 70535] Re: Nautilus copy to USB hard drive crashed

2006-11-05 Thread wild.ideas
This is odd: Nautilus was able to copy this file initially from one
internal HD to another, without crashing at 4GB. In this case, the
source HD was NTFS and the destination was ext3.

[Bug 46010] alias in .profile prevents gnome from being started

2006-11-05 Thread Joerg Domaschka
Public bug reported:

Hi everybody,

recently I got some problems updating from breezy to dapper beta, so I
removed the update and re-installed it on a clean partition. After
changing my home directory to a NFS mounted directory the same problems
as before occured. I found out that it is about this line in my
~/.profile file:

alias ls="ls --color=always"

removing it let's gnome start without failure, inserting it prints an
error message like "I could not start your session..."; the message is
printed in /etc/gdm/Xsession

there are quite a lot of other alias statements in this file, but this
is the only one that makes problems; perhaps it's because of the
recursive definition?

my .profile is actually intended to be used as a script for the bash
log-in, as described in "man bash" (I know ubuntu uses .bash_profile
instead); Obviously /etc/gdm/Xsession also uses a file called
~/.profile.

Is this the same file or is this just a name clash?

However, even this does not explain why gnome fails because of such a
simple command...

regards,
Joerg

2006-11-05 Thread Constantine Evans
Thank you for your comments. I believe that you do make good points, but
bug reports are not the proper venue for discussing such changes. Your
ideas would be better received as a specification
(https://features.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs, and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureSpecifications), especially since, if
such changes were to be made, it would be best if they were made
consistently throughout packages in Ubuntu's main.

[Bug 70520] "Open with" behaviour by file type does not work as expected with zip archives renamed, such as rosegarden or xournal files

2006-11-05 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I use edgy. If I try to associate xournal to .xoj files, by right
clicking on an xoj file, and then selecting "properties" and "open
with", I can associate xournal to "zipped archives" (I am using italian
locale so forgive me some english translation fuzzyness). The problem is
that .xoj files are zip archives renamed, like openoffice files. Now I
want to associate rosegarden to .rg files, that also are zip archives
renamed, and this means unassociate xournal. I need the option to set
files by extension, and also I claim that not giving this as a visible
option affects usability of the file manager, since users will not
understand why the system insists on talking about archives, when I am
providing xournal or rosegarden files. Also, this causes confusion,
since openoffice files are correctly managed by extension, and I would
like to be able to replicate the same behavior for xournal files.

Am I wrong, or is there no way to configure mimetypes in nautilus
(something like a searchable list or tree of mimetypes and their
matching conditions)?

line and then reboot.

blacklist asus_acpi

For some reason the hal daemon in Edgy doesn't like this module (Asus
notebook acpi extras) on the A6 series notebooks. This line will prevent
the module from loading and make hald, suspend etc. work again.

The downside is you'll lose some acpi controlled functionality, like the
LCD brightness buttons.

[Bug 70489] Reovable media gets mounted halfway through format

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

When I format of partition a removable drive in gparted, it gets mounted
halfway through the format and the filesystem becomes corrupted. My workaround

Surely gparted should do this itself when it formats a drive?

[Bug 70479] Firefox/flash fights over audio device with other apps (and finally looses)

2006-11-05 Thread Joakim Larsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

To reproduce:

- Install Dapper Drake 6.06 x86 (well whatever, might not be needed)
- Install Gstreamer pacjages for MP3 etc
- Startup http://youtube.com/
- Click on the webpage to auto install the needed flashplugin for the youtube
videos (flash 7)
- Start to watch a lengthy video
- In the meantime double click on an MP3 file on the desktop so it starts to
play

[There is NO audio from the MP3!]

- Load another page in firefox without flash content

[There IS now audio from the MP3!]

- Go back to youtube.com and start the video again

[There is NO audio from the video]

- Quit the MP3 player

[There is still NO audio from the video]

So this is the bug, Firefox/flash never recovers from this state and
needs to be restarted. Problem is that people doesn't realize the cause
and thinks something is really broken. I changed the audio card and
almost reinstalled Ubuntu before I realized that it was reproduzable and
not a random error.

I don't know what software part to blame but audio apps should be able
to cope with each other.

burn a second CD the drive icon never showed up on the desktop when I
inserted an empty CD-R disc. Nautilus-cd-burner informed me that it
could not find a suitable media to write the disc on but the device was
listed in the pulldown. I tried in several ways to have the drive and
media to be detected:

- pulled the firewire connector and connected it agian
- changed the CD-R disc

Lastly I rebooted and it was detected normally with same CD-R disc and i
could proceed. The error is not repeatable su I guess I had a bad Karma

[Bug 70464] Please disable bug-buddy crash notifications!

2006-11-05 Thread Dennis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bug-buddy

Ubuntu Edgy has been spamming bugs.gnome.org with a large volume of
useless bug reports [1]. Because Edgy does not come with debugging
symbols installed, crashes do not contain information that can help
track their true cause. Asking the bug reporters for additional
information has resulted in no additional response. There are a limited

them to waste their limited time on these invalid bug reports. Please

There is a configuration dialog in Evolution to choose the publishing

Second, there could be option to auto-publish marked calendar after a

The rules in 10-storage-policy.fdi set the desired_mount_point for iPods

because of all the upgrade issues :(

[Bug 59946] Re: Admin tools require admin group membership

2006-11-05 Thread Christian Niemeyer
Sorry forgot something:

Now after Rebooting I experienced, that e.g. services-admin starts without
asking permissions. Then you need to run alacarte menu editor and check the
section >System >Administration and put gksu before these commands:
gksu gdmsetup
gksu users-admin
gksu time-admin
gksu services-admin
gksu network-admin

[Bug 59946] Re: Admin tools require admin group membership

2006-11-05 Thread Christian Niemeyer
For me the error occured when I wanted to disable some services via
"services-admin". Accidentally I unchecked dbus. And since there was the
problem.

Fix:
Run Synaptic (should still work)
Re-Install following packages:
-gnome-system-tools
-system-tools-backend
-dbus
-libdbus-1-3
(or simply all packages in which names occur "dbus", don't know exactly, so I
did)

Now try to run services-admin again and check that dbus there is
enabled. Maybe Re-Login or Reboot is needed.

Hope this was helpful
Regards,
Chris

I have the same problem: after click on "About Ubuntu" at System menu, a

disappears without launching any application.

Running from the terminal the command line:

I have the output:

yelp: error while loading shared libraries: libgtkembedmoz.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

My distro is Dapper Drake and Gnome 2.14.3. Firefox 2.0 installed.

Even uninstalling Mozilla browser the problem continues...

2006-11-05 Thread José M . López-Cepero
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

I suggest having windows raised not on mouse-button-down (as they are
now), but in mouse-button-up; making that the default behavior and/or
adding an option to turn it on.

Furthermore, I suggest raising windows if the cursor stays over them for
a few seconds when in a drag&drop operation.

Rationale:

 - There are two main "click" operations which can be done in a window:
click (button down, button up) and drag (button down, move mouse holding
button), as in drag&drop operations.

 - If the user clicks in a window, the new behavior would be almost the
same as it is now, with no noticeable differences other than the (very
small) delay between mouse-down and mouse-up.

 - If the user wants to do a drag&drop operation, the new behavior would
allow him to do the drag&drop between _all visible items_ the moment the
operation begins, whereas the old behavior does not.

Say you have two partially overlapping Nautilus windows open. In the one
in the foreground there is a folder, and in the one in the background
there is a file which is not obscured by the foreground window. You want
to drag that file to the folder. With the current behavior, clicking and
dragging on the file immediately raises the background window, changing
the screen distribution (counter-intuitive) and obscuring a significant
part of the foreground window (likely including the intended drag&drop
target). With the new behavior, you just drag the (visible) file to the
(visible) folder and that's it.

Let's say now that the situation is reversed. You want to drag a file
from a foreground window to a folder in a background window. The
background window is obscured by the foreground window, so the target
folder is not visible. With the current behavior the best way to
drag&drop is either moving the windows (so the drag&drop is not direct)
or using the task bar (rather inconvenient). With the proposed behavior
it's just drag the file to the visible part of the background screen -
linger for 2 seconds with the button down - the background screens is
raised - drag to the (now visible) folder and release the button.

The suggested behavior would make dragging & dropping more convenient
and more intuitive, and I have seen it implemented to good use in
several other file managers. I have filed the bug against Metacity
because I suppose that it's possible to control this policy in the
window manager.

Thanks for your time and keep up the good work.

[Bug 70413] column resizing behavior is not predictable

2006-11-05 Thread Olivier Grégoire
Public bug reported:

I only use six columns in Rhythmbox in this order : currently playing,
track, title, artist, album and length.

When I try to make the title-column smaller, I click on the title-artist
separation. Then I drag it to the left to reduce the column size.

But, as soon as I start dragging it to the left, the title column takes
more place and my cursor does not correspond to the column separator
anymore (the separator is hundreds of pixels right of my cursor). And
when I go left past beyond the title-column title, "Title", my movements
do not seem to be 'heard' by the application.

During this whole operation, the columns on the right of the title-
column (artist and album) are resized too, though it would logically be
only the artist-column that be resized to fill the title-place I use, or
all the columns are moved to the left, creating a column-less space on
the right of the length-column.

Sorry for my English, I'm still learning it. If you don't understand
what I mean, could you let me converse about it with a French-speaking
person who could then explain it clearly to you ?
