[Bug 14692] Re: hal detects written DVD as empty

2006-11-22 Thread Jose Herran

I have the same problem too. Before the update to Edgy works fine, but after it
does not work. Nowadays i only can read/write cdroms and read dvd format, but
can't read nor write data dvds.

This is the output of the revised script:

$ ./cdcaps.py /dev/hdc
CDO_USE_FFLAGS returned 13
got drive capabilities: 3bfbef
CDC_DVD_RAM support

[Bug 72718] [users-admin] doesn't change password when select the 'generate password' option

2006-11-22 Thread Mathieu ALORENT
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I've found on dapper that if I try to change the current password of one user
by a generated one using users-admin, the new password is not saved.
If I use the first option and choose myself a password, it is saved...

Step to reproduce :

1. start users-admin (Système - administration - users groups)
2. edit one user
3. select the generate random password (write it on a sheet of paper)
4. save quit
5. open a terminal
6. su - your_user, and try the old password the new one

In my case the good password is the old one.

This has not been tested on edgy.

[Bug 71200] No programs can be added in the startup list.

2006-11-22 Thread geokok
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: startup-tasks

This seems to be a random problem. Some have and some not.
To add a program to automatically startup I would go to :
system--preferences--sessions--startup programs.
There I can add an application to the the list but it is not saved (if I close
and reopen session manager it is not there and the app will not start on next
login).

In the forums a workaround was suggested at this link:

[Bug 72966] crash on opening empty text file

2006-11-22 Thread Stefan W.
Public bug reported:

I launched Gnumeric accidentally by double clicking on a file called
industries.csv which is 1 byte long (a newline character, 0x0a).

For what it's worth, Gnumeric also crashes when opening (double click in
nautilus, use gnome-open, or launch Gnumeric first and choose file-open
from the menu) an empty file called empty.csv but succeeds on
similarly named 1 byte files containing a comma (0x2c) or tab character
(0x09).

Bug Buddy reports the following error, so I'll just paste the traceback
details below...

Transcript of xterm session:

The program 'gnome-terminal' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.

that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 72948] Usb mass storage not mounting after some time

2006-11-22 Thread grzebo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

After restarting the system, once I plug in a USB mass storage device it
mounts properly. But after few times - it simply stops working - same
device, nothing changed.

The /dev/sda1 does not get created. There are no entries in syslog when
I plug in the device.

modprobe usb_storage works (returns no errors, appears in syslog), but
does not help.

[Bug 72947] System will be unresponsive, causing reboot

2006-11-22 Thread jeffk
Public bug reported:

Not sure what is causing this. Does not seem to matter what I am doing,
but mostly when system is idle. I have been trying to see if I log out,
then log back on when I am busy with other things. The 'bug' can happen
when logged out and idle. I did some investigating and discovered my
system, IBM Thinkcentre, has a dualcore processor. I see in
/var/log/messages that 2 cpu's are brought up. In the BIOS settings,
there is an option for hyperthreading. I wonder if disabling this will
make a difference. I have a 160Gb HD with WinXP, Ubuntu Edgy Eft, and
Xandros, 1Gb memory. Otherwise I love Ubuntu for it's looks, ease of
loading, hardware support, and the fact that it sees my digital camera
and PDA. Is there a file that gets created when things go haywire?
Ubuntu told me there was a gnome-session crash file, but I see no way of
attaching that file here. Thanks

Jeff K

[Bug 72935] Paren processes display incorrect memory usage

2006-11-22 Thread Kotatsu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Title says it all -- some processes display an odd number for memory
usage on the generic Memory (not resident, virtual, etc.) column. This
is on an AMD64 system, perhaps that has something to do with the
incorrect calculation (17179869180.0 GiB).

[Bug 72928] Clearing recent documents clears only the list in panel

2006-11-22 Thread Antti Laisi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Steps to reproduce:
 - open a movie file from nautilus with totem, close when done
 - open a image from nautilus with eog, close when done
 - gnome-panel: Places-Recent documents-Clear recent documents
 - the list in Places-Recent documents is now empty
 - open totem or eog: the files are still visible in the File menu!

[Bug 72898] gdm crashed from illegal instruction

2006-11-22 Thread Eric Raehn
Public bug reported:

When I booted up my Ubuntu 6.10, gnome booted up to the background but
the splash screen did not start up and gnome freezed up. I pressed
ctrl+alt+backspace. Gnome died but did not start up. I was able to
startx from the command line from tty1, but gdm, apt-get and shutdown
commands brought a illegal instruction message to the command line and
the above commands would not execute.

[Bug 72857] Re: Alacarte lack a way to change all the users' menu in a snapshot

2006-11-22 Thread sid
I'm having quite a similar setup here: 15 LTSP Clients with up to 800 users. I
tried to use alacarte and sabayon for administration, but also had a lot of
trouble with it. If you just want to remove the entries from users' desktops,
you can go to /usr/share/applications and find and rename all the entries you
don't want to be displayed. I just added a .disabled after the file names, i.e.
applicationname.desktop.disabled.
Alternatively you could set the permissions of the relevant bin files to 750,
so that users are not allowed to start the programs anymore. But of course that
doesnt remove the desktop entries...

[Bug 72857] Alacarte lack a way to change all the users' menu in a snapshot

2006-11-22 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

Working with edubuntu with many users (I have about 500 students on my
edubuntu system) it's very important to have a way to modify all the
users' menus in a snapshot.

In dapper it was easy: sudo smeg --root.

Unfortunatly that's not possible in edgy. That feature isn't in edgy's
alacarte.

Alacarte only permits to edit user specific menus, and it is impossible
to add or delete a menu enty for all users on a machine with alacarte
without launching it for each user, or asking each user to do it himself
by following a procedure...

In my case it's important, because with 40 clients I need to deactivate
all the graphic education programs, because they eat rapidly all the
processor cpu time. Also I need to remove the games from the menu,
because the students are tempted to use them and they don't work in the
teaching.
