[Bug 81098] a meaningful name should be given to compressed files if there is only one file to compress

[Bug 72287] Re: Apple MacBook backlight brightness doesn't work

2007-01-23 Thread Ryan Lortie
It turns out that on suspend/resume, the backlight control register is
clobbered to all-zeros.

The only way to fix this is to use vbetool to save/restore the BIOS
state. This is currently broken on the macbook due to the init scripts
being out of order (vbesave runs before acpid, and on macbook this
causes vbesave to fail to detect that we're a laptop).

There is, however, another fix. The attached program (which is a
hackish modification of part of the patch submitted upstream) will reset
the value of the register. This seems to be sufficient to get the card
working properly again (ie: no need for a full vbetool state restore).

Link with -lpci.

This code needs to be somewhere -- be it in the kernel, the X server,
HAL or the system resume scripts -- but only run for Macbooks. I'm
guessing that for now, HAL or system resume scripts is the easy
answer.

Also: to do this properly we should probably look at the value of the
backlight at suspend, save this value, then write the same value back on
resume. The current code just sets to max value on resume.

David is currently romping around in the aussie outback. I'll try to
nail him down to find out what he thinks :)

[Bug 81104] Re: network and network tools in control panel should be on internet network

2007-01-23 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Do you have
an internet network category listed? What items are listed there?
The category is definied by the .desktop shipped by the application,
misplaced item are a request for the application to update its desktop
file, not for the control-center package

[Bug 81111] Isn't up-to-date, is still compiled for epiphany 2.15 not 2.17

2007-01-23 Thread andreas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-extension-gwget

sudo apt-get install epiphany-extension-gwget

Open epiphany-Tools-Extentions

Gwget extension is not there.

Take a look at:

dpkg -L epiphany-extension-gwget

You will see the files are placed in /usr/lib/epiphany/2.15/extensions
not in /usr/lib/epiphany/2.17/extensions as they should

Creating a link doesn't work, since they seem to have been compiled

[Bug 81104] Re: network and network tools in control panel should be on internet network

2007-01-23 Thread Emilio Pozuelo
Hi Sebastien.

Sorry for missing the info. I use Feisty fawn up-to-date.

Yes, I have this categories:
Hardware
Internet and Network
Look and Feel
Personal
System
Other

And Internet and Network just has the Proxy.
And the Network and the Network Tools are in the System category. I think they
should be on the Internet and Network category.

And Seb: I've found other things that I think should be on other
category. Do you want me to post them here or to file a new bug?

Thanks
Pochu

[Bug 52017] Re: changing settings (like paper size) have no effect in CUPS

2007-01-23 Thread Chris Burgan
I can confirm a very similar problem however this was in Edgy and the
printer being used was a HP Deskjet 940C.

The problem was that by using: System - Administration - Printing
menu to go in and change the printer properties, in this case default
print type from normal to normal grayscale would have no effect in the
printer's ppd file or anywhere else for that matter... resulting in the
printer always printing in color. By manually changing the
*DefaultPrintoutMode from Normal to Normal.Gray we were able to
create a workaround.

[Bug 81122] Some media files are not recognised as such (ogm, mkv, mka)

2007-01-23 Thread Phil Housley
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shared-mime-info

Certain types of media files are not recognised as being media in
nautilus; as can be seen when thumbnailing fails and you just get a
blank-page icon. Some I've noticed:

Matroska audio, with .mka extension
Matroska video, with .mkv extension
Ogg with video, with .ogm extension

[Bug 81135] File Save Window default height

2007-01-23 Thread Don Capo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

When saving a file in many applications (Firefox, Open Office, etc.),
gnome offers the file save dialogue window. If one chooses to browse
for other folders, the window grows slightly but only reveals ONE
folder name. Only if I expand the window vertically may I see a usable
number.

When I am wanting to save a file quickly, I would not be disappointed
for gnome to take up more of the vertical space available.

I have seen this problem in Dapper @ 1024x768, and sometimes at higher
screen resolutions.

It seems to me that the window is trying to get bigger but bumps in to
the bottom of the visible space.

[Bug 81176] [Feisty] No sound

2007-01-23 Thread Vassilis Pandis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Booting into Feisty, I had no sound. I realised that the reason for this
was that the 'headphones' were selected from the volume applet, and
their volume was max while the system volume was zero. So the fix was
simply to change the volumes. Of course, no headphones were plugged in.

Please let me know what information is needed to resolve this problem.

[Bug 76623] Re: default screensaver cumbersome on old hardware

added 01_ubuntu_floaters.patch and default to it

Wow, I'm really glad to see that this was implemented. So, fresh ubuntu
installs will show ubuntu floaters unless changed? cool!

I have two more suggestions:

-I'd rather have one big logo than several small ones. How big can the
logo get now that it's on SVG graphics?

-The logo should move slowlier and maybe have a slight spinning motion.
A huge logo where only a part of it is onscreen, slowly rotating and
slowly moving through the screen, would be ideal.

[Bug 52017] Re: changing settings (like paper size) have no effect in CUPS

2007-01-23 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
@Chris

For printing bugs it is difficult to tell if they are the same at a high
level, as a printing bug triager I can only determine that a printing
bug is a duplicate of another one when enough low level information has
been provided. So generally for printing bugs it is best to file a new
bug report instead of making other bugs difficult to triage by posting
possibly unrelated comments.

Please open a separate bug report for your problem and attach the output
of the printingbug info script
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript) for some basic
information about your printing setup.

[Bug 80339] Re: /etc/init.d/gdm restart in X fails to start gdm

2007-01-23 Thread Pascal Potvin
It doesn't work because the command is run within a gdm session.

It causes one of those two things :

1- The xterm is closed, as the script, and gdm just doesn't start
2- xterm makes X stays open while gdm is down, and gdm cannot start a new X
session.

One easy workaround is to start the command in screen.

[Bug 74703] Re: There is no way to install .pdb .prc files

2007-01-23 Thread Alan Pope
The command line tool gpilot-install-file can be used to install files
such as pdb and prc to the palm device. The device must first be
configured in gpilot-control-applet (single click on the applet to start
this). Once done I found I could right click a .prc and choose Open
with other application then Use custom command. The command gpilot-
install-file was then used which popped up a dialog, waited for me to
press the hotsync button, then installed the file okay.

It would indeed be nice to have a context menu (perhaps under Send to)
to do this, especially if one could click multiple files at once and
then send them to the palm device.

Well, I used the live cd 0.3.3 but it directly doesn't recognize the
partition table. Only recognize the disk model, capacity, etc., but in
the item Partition table type, it says unknown and no patitions are
shown. No one. If you need any kind of information about my partitions,

[Bug 81205] Re: Clock applet doesn't allow me to choose Monday as the starting day of the week

2007-01-23 Thread Áron Sisak
Upstream reports the above. However there should be an easy and
intuitive way in Ubuntu to change it. I might write a specification
about this later.

---

There are three solutions:

+ you can change your locale setting for LC_TIME
+ you can open a bug against GTK+ to ask for this for the GtkCalendar widgets
(they might close it as WONTFIX, though)
+ you can wait for http://live.gnome.org/LocaleProject

Right now, there is really nothing we can do in the clock applet to fix this.
So I'm closing the bug, but feel free to open it again if GTK+ maintainers
agree that fixing GtkCalendar is the right way to do this.

[Bug 80798] Re: Confinguration of Network-based printer unclear

2007-01-23 Thread Till Kamppeter
This is solved by both CUPS 1.2 (with its SNMP backend which scans for
network printers) and by printerdrake, the planned replacement of the
gnome-cups-manager (providing a GUI frontend for the SNMP backend).

Problem of Ubuntu here is that the SNMP backend is deactivated by
default (by putting it into /usr/lib/cups/backend-available/). My
suggestion is to make it active for Feisty. The scan takes only 3-4 sec
and is very useful, especially for unexperienced users.
