>From a personal email from the upstream author:

Yes. That bug is a request to support the xscreensaver configuration
mechanism. We don't want to support that for a variety of reasons.

I've opened bug 354805 [1] and put some thoughts on how one might
implement configuration support in a sensible way that is consistent
with KDE and can store settings in gconf. I'd accept patches for that.
It really is a completely different thing than the xscreensaver config
support.

[Bug 35217] Re: Unable to login when disk space is exhausted

2007-02-12 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
There already is reserved space (for root, and gdm is launched as root)
however this space can be filled by root itself using e.g. apt or
pbuilder. Reserving space for a single program might be interesting but
would require kernel modification.

I have a simpler solution in mind, but I am still waiting to find the
time to try this :) The idea is to make gdm write _all_ of its temporary
files, which are small, on a ramfs. Mounting a ramfs is really easy,
however I didn't have the time to modify gdm in order to write all files
in a user-defined directory. The next step would then be to check how
many programs of the default gnome session crash if disk space is
exhausted and perhaps use the same trick (even if I suspect non-root
applications writing to a temporary filesystem could lead to denial of
service attacks).

In "man mount" one can find

===
Mount options for ramfs
Ramfs is a memory based filesystem. Mount it and you have it. Unmount
it and it is gone. Present since Linux 2.3.99pre4. There are no mount
   options.

===

Actually, it is not necessary to use a ramfs. A loopback ext2 mount on
a fixed-size file would probably be easier, and raise less security
problems. The fixed-size file would act as the space "reserved for gdm".
A temporary directory for the logged in user could be created, even with
quotas, to allow writing temporary sockets to all session applications.

In both cases, the main problem remains, to make gdm write into a
precise directory and not where she wants, i.e. in /tmp. First of all,
let's see what are the files that gdm absolutely needs to write. Quoting
from the upstream bug, the files gdm writes at login are:

===
+ /tmp/.gdm_socket for the GDM daemon and GUI program to talk to each other
properly. Without the socket being setup, GDM probably would still work
though the GUI program wouldn't be able to access the config file and would
instead revert to the compiled-in defaults (e.g. your theming would probably
be wrong). Features that require the socket to be working (such as
automatic/timed login or any gdmflexiserver --commands) would also not work.
Perhaps moving the socket to /var/tmp might make it less likely you'd have
  problems here?

+ GDM uses /tmp for the fallback Xauth key directory if the normal xauth
directory (UserAuthDir in the GDM configuraiton) is also full. If GDM can't
write xauth files, then it probably wouldn't let the user login. If both
UserAuthDir and /tmp are full, this could be a problem with GDM not allowing
users to log in at all.

+ /tmp/.ICE-unix, /tmp/.X11-lock, and /tmp/.X11-unix are also used. Not sure
how GDM will break if it couldn't write these files. I'm guessing this might
be the problem that causes GDM to fail to allow login when /tmp is full.

+ If the user's $HOME is full, it will put the .xsession-errors file in /tmp
instead. Probably not a big deal if these don't get written, though I'm not
sure what GDM does if it can't write them.
===

Then, I e-mailed Brian Cameron directly, asking him where are the
locations of all these files decided in the code, this was the reply:

===
You'ld need to edit the daemon/gdm.h file and modify this line:

#define GDM_SUP_SOCKET "/tmp/.gdm_socket"

Might be nice if this could be configured in the GDM configuration
file rather than being hardcoded in the code. If you find that fixing
this corrects the problems with GDM not working when /tmp is full, then
I'd be happy to accept a patch that allows people to configure this.
Also perhaps adding some user docs to explain how you can use ad-hoc
ramfs to avoid GDM problems when /tmp is full, etc.
===

That's all :)

[Bug 26618] Re: Only the foreground user should be able to trigger suspends

2007-02-12 Thread Sebastien Bacher
That upload fixes the problem:

 gdm (2.17.7-0ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream version:
 - New sockets command FLEXI_XNEST_USER and FLEXI_XSERVER_USER. This is
used to start login procedure by programs like gnome-screensaver and the
   Fast User Switch applet.
 - Improvements to PAM logic so that it works more generically with PAM
   modules.
 - Better fix for not showing the face browser if the userlist is empty.
This avoids a needless selection "changed" signal from getting generated.
 - Fix so ConsoleKit logic does not use dbus-glib bindings to using the
lower level API instead. Fixes bug #400793.
 - Fixes for compiler warnings and for c99 compile issues.
 - Avoid catching sigchld when trying to call XOpenDisplay. This corrects
an issue where GDM catches a second SIGCHLD when trying to restart.
This causes the slave to freeze even though the Xserver and the session
are killed, causing the display to no longer manage.
 - Improvements to PAM documentation in GDM docs.
 - Translation updates
   * debian/patches/11_powermanagement.patch:
 - updated with change by Matthew Garrett to limit suspend and hibernate
to the foreground user (Ubuntu: #26618)

Fastguy, if you are patient then the installation may complete -- I had
to leave it sit for a couple of minutes each time it went to look for
hardware (ie after most interactions.) It's pretty annoying but the
installation did complete. (May not work for you.)

[Bug 84709] wrong dependency from gs?

2007-02-12 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

In the default feisty installation, evince does not display postscript
files at all. The fact that it gives no error has been reported in other
bugs and fixed upstream, however the dependencies of evince are somewhat
wrong: it depends on "gs-esp-x | gs" however "gs-esp" (notice, without
the final "-x") provides gs. So in the default install, gs-esp is
installed without gs-esp-x. BTW, I had to install kghostview to get an
error, and I had to blindly try to guess from "unknown device x11" and
"apt-cache search ghostview", that I had to install "gs-esp-x".

Clearly installing gs-esp-x solves the problem, I don't know if the "gs"
feature is not supposed to provide x11, so that would be a bug of
evince, that should tighten its dependencies, or if it is supposed to
provide it, in that case the bug is in gs-esp providing gs which is
wrong.

[Bug 84710] allow entering text when the deskbar icon is clicked

2007-02-12 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

I use deskbar as a panel entry, not a panel button.

Sometimes I click the magnifying glass icon, expecting deskbar to select
all entered text and allow me to replace it. The text is selected
indeed, but deskbar does not let me write over it.

Other apps like Epiphany select all the text and let the user overwrite
it when the icon is clicked, so it would be just logical that deskbar
should have the same behaviour, wouldn't it?

So, could hitting alt+F3 show the history results too and allow access

[Bug 2066] Re: Unable to load any usable fontset

2007-02-12 Thread Simon Martin
I can confirm this behaviour. I modified /etc/environment to LANG="C",
LANGUAGE="C", and things came back to life. I then set it to
LANG="en_GB" and LANGUAGE="en_GB" and it still worked. Now with the
default of LANG="en_GB.UTF-8" and LANGUAGE="en_GB:en" then I get the
font problems.

Definitely looks like a locale problem.

[Bug 24430] Re: "connect to server" feature don't manage NFS shares

2007-02-12 Thread scananza
I have the same problem and, for what I've found out, it is related to NFS
protocol not being supported by current version of gnomevfs2.
I read somewhere that NFS got dropped switching from gnomevfs to gnomevfs2 and
that support is now available only through a patch. I think ubuntu package
lacks that patch.
This is really annoying since it forces user to browse NFS shares in nautilus
via fstab and you have to change it by hand if you connect your laptop to
different LANs.
I think NFS support should be enable back again in feisty in order to surf Unix
networks in nautilus like we can actually surf SMB shares at the time.

greyed out.

When looked to see what the diffs were between gthumb under Feisty and
Edgy I noticed there were depend libs missing from the Feisty build of
gthumbs.

The libs missing are:
libgphoto2-2
libgphoto2-port0

[Bug 84722] deskbar-applet requires too many keystrokes

2007-02-12 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

The deskbar applet is a bit annoying by needing too many
clicks/keystrokes to use. There's a bit too much redundancy. Consider
the attached screenshot: I write picard in the entry. The first line
accessible with the arrows is the "Action" category -- which is
unnecessary because there's no other category right now. Also, assuming
the deskbar guessed right, it seems that you have to click 'down' twice
to get at the first result.

(I know I just have to press Enter, but that's not obvious; perhaps the
"active" line should be selected, so I have a suggestion of what would
happen when I press Enter.)

Then, running Picard is presented twice. There's no difference between
the two options. Perhaps they should be combined, or at least move the
least likely one at the bottom of the list (the one taken from the apps
menu is prettier). As it is now, if I wanted to actually search for
picard in beagle, I would have to press 'down' four times, then Enter,
when it fact it is the second option.

As it should be, the first entry should be always selected (and
activated at the first Enter press), the 'search in picard' should be
immediately below it, and the first 'down arrow' press should select it.

Another thing: since the deskbar is supposed to allow keyboard
navigation, the most likely entries should have shortcuts, either like
Alt+3 to _run_ the third option or Alt+b to choose beagle search, Alt+g
for google, etc. for some standard ones.

Actually, since beagle also searches for applications and stuff, perhaps
it would be nice to actually display beagle search _results_ in real
time in the box. It would jump over one new window display and one Enter
press.

[Bug 78756] Re: photo import does not work any more

2007-02-12 Thread Conrad Knauer
Dale: As part of the original description for this bug, I mentioned that
I was able to extract the images off my camera using gtkam; among its
dependencies are libgphoto2-2 and libgphoto2-port0 :)

Unfortunately, having them installed on my system doesn't seem to help
the dbus error problem with running gnome-volume-manager-gthumb on my
system.

However, if running gtkam lets you get to your pics, then consider it a
workaround until this bug is solved.

[Bug 84722] Re: deskbar-applet requires too many keystrokes

2007-02-12 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
But I still don't like it because of navigation issues :-)

For the same simple search ("picard"), I get a screen-high list of
things --- with a scrollbar, that can' be mouse-clicked! -- that is
near-impossible to walk through.

In this example, categories with more than, say, five entries, should display
only the likeliest three (or the first if there's no other info) and allow easy
navigation: for instance, in this example:
- the Files section should display only three entries, among which should be
the picard folder (that's currently near the bottom)
- the Files section should have an Alt-F shortcut marked near its title. When I
press it, the section should be selected, and:
   - left/right should navigate between pages
   - space should toggle between the contracted and and "expanded" list
   - enter should probably open the first hit, and 'down arrow' should probably
select the second hit.

[Bug 66933] Re: Recent Documents doesn't include files opened from within OOO

As a heavy OpenOffice user, who works on several documents
simultaneously and keeps opening and closing them, I find this bug
extremely annoying. It actually makes the recent document list quite
useless for me. Maybe we can raise its importance?

yup attached are the files. Briefly, what are these? i gather that
/var/log/message is what the OS is instructed to tell you and
/var/log/syslog is a log of the system (or system events i suppose) but
what's Xorg.0.log? (briefly, just a quick explanation)

[Bug 84729] Mpeg playback from windows share really choppy

2007-02-12 Thread tlimon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Playback of MPEG files recorded at high quality (720x480 @ 384Kbps) is
limited to a few seconds before the buffer reloads whilst playing over
the network. I can playback low quality (e.g. cartoons 480x480 @
256Kbps) fine over the network. Local copies of high quality video play
fine too. The network is fast enough as I've been able to copy the
entire hours worth of high quality video in 4 minutes to the local drive
over the network. Something in Totem causes higher bitrate files to re-
buffer every few seconds. See
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=255906&highlight=totem+video+buffer
for the exact same issue.

Xorg.0.log are the log from the graphical server. Did you get those log
after a crash? at what time the crash happened? from a quick look I
didn't spot any probolem, that's not a totem bug for sure, not sure if
that's xorg or the videodriver or linux to blame though
