Almost any data DVDs I have do not get automounted with kubuntu 7.04
  beta.

The bug seems the same as the following in debian etch:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=370186

And it got fixed with the following patch:

  http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/h/hal/hal_0.5.8.1-9/changelog

+ ~~~
  * debian/patches/30_cdrom_bogus_tocinfo.patch

the
-TOC, causing hal to not detect the filesystem. Work around this by
-rescanning at offset 0 for discs when filesystem detection fails.
+ - Added. Some cdrom drives/discs report a wrong start of the session in he
TOC, causing hal to not detect the filesystem. Work around this by

So, if this patch isn't already in Feisty hal package, I think it should
  be included.

  Thanks

Re: [Bug 84603] Re: Hard disk I/O randomly freezes when hald is running and optical drive is empty

2007-03-27 Thread Kevin P
My problem began after a Feisty update as well.

Try booting into recovery mode and running e2fsck on each partition.
Then add the kernel options acpi=off pci=bios That seems to have got my
system working again. I did some tests last night and could boot with
acpi=off but without the option I had problems. I have also noticed some
hard disk corruption now as well. The same disk worked with no problems
when I booted using an old knoppix disk. So I conclude there is a
problem somewhere between the libata driver and the hardware.

[Bug 84603] Re: Hard disk I/O randomly freezes when hald is running and optical drive is empty

2007-03-27 Thread Kevin P
Ran some tests last night:

1. Adding acpi=off as a boot parameter appears to make the system more
stable. I tried various bios and kernel parameter options but the best
combination was leaving the bios in all default settings and adding the
acpi=off to the kernel. This could be a red herring as the problem seems
to be intermittent anyway.

2. I only get problems with a 250GB Maxtor maxline iii drive. An 80Gb
Samsung Spinpoint works with no issues.

3. Booting the system from an old Knoppix disk I got no issues. The
issue appears to lie with how recent kernels interact with the maxline
disk.

4. I am seeing some corruption and had to e2fsck my root partition.

[Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2007-03-27 Thread David Balažic
I just did some file browsing with the latest Feisty beta, using the keyboard.
Then, I had to reach for the mouse to move the pointer out of the way, becasue
it was covering the name of the file...

Besides, this is not GNOME specific. Not all apps are GNOME/GTK+.

[Bug 94048] Re: [feisty] Slow gnome application startup due to /etc/hosts misconfiguration

2007-03-27 Thread Jarmo Ilonen
Vipul,

Unfortunately there does not seem to be any clear difference between
starting times before or after the change. Looking at the strace logs
the total times are before 1.71s and 0.76s, and after 0.61 and 0.65. The
only one that stands out of those is is strace-before-1.log and looking
at it seems that normal file handling operations etc were a bit slower,
it was probably the first run and files were not yet cached. Also time-*
logs show 1-1.5s elapsed times for all runs, so in this case the
/etc/hosts modification does not seem to make a difference.

Strace log would be interesting from a case where the startup of gnome-
terminal is significantly slower than it is after the /etc/hosts
modification, for example, from a ~10s startup like the original bug
reporter mentions.
