[Bug 116329] Re: Login screen missing when login reconfigured

2007-05-22 Thread Martin Pitt
Tentatively setting to gdm for now, and removing security flag (that's
not a security vulnerability at all).

What is "thread #6130"? Can you please give us an URL for this? Can you
please describe how you get to that problem in more detail? ("picked too
many parameters")

Thank you!

[Bug 116329] Login screen missing when login reconfigured

2007-05-22 Thread Al
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have Ubuntu 7.04 updated.
I had the same problem as thread #6130. I picked too many parameters and I got
the "black screen of pause" when I booted up again. No Ubuntu Xwindows screen,
just a small round clock-like icon waiting for something.

I had to set the "enable automatic login" parameter in "Windows Login
Preferences" in order for the Ubuntu Xwindows session to come up again,
however, I cannot get a login screen resulting in a security issue. I
have to have the system automatically log me in because when I disable
"automatic login" I get the black screen of pause again. This is a bug
with the configuration parameters in the preferences interface.

I was getting cute with the Login Window configuration. I followed the
thread entitled "No Graphic Login screen to get to desktop" #6130. Very
helpful.

HOWEVER! I have something to add.

How to fix the problem temporarily

CTRL/ALT/F2
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
startx

(start a terminal session when you get in to the Xwindows session)
(The Login Windows Preferences will not start unless you start gdm again)

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

(you will get a hideous screen, ignore it, hit CTRL/ALT/F7 to get in to the
Xwindows session again)
(set your Windows Preferences parameters, preferably auto login by disabling
automatic login)

exit out and restart the computer

HOPEFULLY the Ubuntu brains will find and publish a fix.

This bug is a local security vulnerability.

[Bug 116327] Disk Mounter applet fails to appear on panel

2007-05-22 Thread Jud Ketvirtis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

When I attempt to add "Disk Mounter" from the "Add to Panel" dialog, the
applet fails to appear. What does happen is a thin (perhaps a pixel-
wide) discoloration appears in the Notification Area of the panel, and a
program called drivemount_applet2 shows itself as running in the System
Monitor.

I'm using the standard Gnome with Ubuntu 7.04.

I believe others have experienced this problem but have not yet filed a
report. This discussion at Ubuntu Forums seems to be about the same
issue:

appear to be leaks; I'll attach the valgrind log.

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ubuntu 7.04 feisty with rythmbox version 0.10.0

Let's keep it simple.

1- I plug my ipod (ipod nano 4GB)
2- rhythmbox pop in a "Apple ipod" under my playlists in the source location.
Cool.
3- I look at my ipod and I see "do not disconnect"
4- I transfer songs on the ipod, nothing happens.

I actually have to use another program to transfer songs. Yuk!

[Bug 113092] Re: nautilus in feisty can't open http:// URI which affects service-discovery-applet

2007-05-22 Thread Joe Clifford
"gnome-open URL" works correctly and opens the URL in a new tab in
firefox which is my preferred browser. This works fine for http:// URLs
but does not for ftp:// URLs. Using the work-around explained in my
initial report where I replaced "nautilus" with "gnome-open" in
/usr/share/service-discovery-applet/plugins/nautilus.py allows me to
open web sites published via Zeroconf/avahi BUT it breaks the ability to
open ftp:// URLs from the service-discovery-applet therefore I am almost
sure this is either a nautilus or gnome-vfs bug.

[Bug 63208] Re: Patches For Compiz/Beryl Compatibility

2007-05-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher
0ubuntu1.1 is a non maintainer upload revision and has not been used in
any Ubuntu desktop upload, you can look at the changelog of the package
if you want to know from where it's coming

compiz is working, what is not is the wnck integration when using the
cube. Using the cube is only an option, not required. It's clear that
lot of users wants to try new cool software and that having compiz
available made people switch distro to try it. It's not clear that
people want the cube effect integrated nicely with the desktop switcher
enough to install a new distribution though, especially than compiz and
works fine on the GNOME desktop when you don't use the cube on feisty.

anyway enough discussion on the topic, I think everybody agree we should
fix integration problems and we are going to do that for gutsy!

[Bug 63208] Re: Patches For Compiz/Beryl Compatibility

2007-05-22 Thread garyjefferson
> > Compiz/Beryl *WORKED* in edgy, and the edgy libwnck packages *have
the patches applied*.

> no they didn't, you likely installed the patched version from the non-
Ubuntu compiz archive. We had some discussion with the guy working on
those packages after tracking a bunch of crasher sent on launchpad which
turned to be due to the patches, you can read bug #72804 about it

2.16.1-0ubuntu1.1 works. That sure looked to me like an official
package, but you must be right. Sorry for the lie.

> Lot of users are happy with compiz using workspaces as it's working at
the moment in Ubuntu, exageration is not a way to argue and I don't
think many users will switch distributions only because of the compiz
cube effect lacks make the workspace switcher display one area which is
a detail

I'm sure you know more about this than I do, but I could not get compiz
cube to work no matter what I tried, no matter how many forums or google
searches I did to try to find out the secret. The only thing that
worked for me was downgrading to old libwnck.

As for users switching, again, maybe you know lots more than I do, but I
can certainly give you anecdotal evidence. I convinced one friend to
move to ubuntu with edgy and all the beryl/compiz goodness. Now he is
going back to fedora because it works there out of the box but is broken
in feisty. I can also tell you that *a lot* of people moved to SLED
when Novell first started demo-ing compiz and spinny cube, both from
windows and from redhat. Sounds silly, I know, but these effects are
very attractive to a certain class of users, and the actual productivity
gains (not waiting for redraws while switching desktops, expose-like
functionality, alt-tab sanity, etc) really are things that are hard to
give up once you've experienced them. But, like I said, that's all
anecdotal, and your opinion on how valuable this stuff is certainly
carries more weight than mine.

Sorry if I came off as beligerant -- that wasn't my intent. Really.
You all do some awesome work, and it doesn't help to have whiners like
me pestering you. I'm only pushing because I really like ubuntu, and I
don't want ubuntu users (including myself) to live in pain (or to flee
to other distros) just because we've come to expect functioning
compiz/beryl.

Only my home printer, the HP-1000 was set up before I
changed /etc/papersize, so its default is still A4, but the others all
say "letter." Ironically, because it has very forgiving paper handling,
the HP-1000 prints the A4 pages, but leaves no bottom margin. The HP
printers at the office require manual feed of A4 and the 5Si chokes.

Output of "grep "DefaultPage" /etc/cups/ppd/*.ppd is:

[Bug 63208] Re: Patches For Compiz/Beryl Compatibility

2007-05-22 Thread Christian Holtje
Sebastien is correct. Ubuntu never had these patches. It would be nice
if they got added since beryl is in the repository, even if it is in the
unsupported parts.

There is a bug open in the beryl-project for this. I added a comment to
explain.

Re: [Bug 90258] Re: e-d-s does not exit with gnome-session

2007-05-22 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
Mm strange...
This is what I've done.
created new user
login, added the drivemount-applet (to check this bug)
logout.

ps uxw shows

chievo6384 0.3 0.6 40840 3248 ?Ssl 19:51 0:00
/usr/lib/bonobo-activation/bonobo-activation-server --ac-activate
--ior-output-fd=16
chievo6597 0.1 0.4 4932 2176 ?S19:52 0:00
/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 14

so nothing about evolution-data-server...

after some minutes I executed again ps uxw and obtained ONLY the
bonobo line (so gconfd was down)

then I did my login and the bug was there (the drivemount-applet didn't
show)

So are you still sure that the bug is caused by evolution-data-server
rather than bonobo-activation-server?

[Bug 114885] Re: Notifications won't work. Error After Logout/In again Ubuntu 7.04

2007-05-22 Thread DWHagar
The problem may be solved by installing Galago, then killing the
notification daemon and rebooting the computer.

Not sure why, but this seemed to have helped me.

[Bug 106836] blinking screen when on launchpad.net

2007-05-22 Thread timmay
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm having to write this from my laptop as I can't use this site with my
PC running feisty beta.

When I viewing launchpad.net the whole screen blinks randomly, this can
be simply annoying or can make it impossible to read, type and navigate
the site, it can be that bad! I've tried launchpad.net in bot Firefox
and Epiphany Web Browser (GNOME Web Browser 2.18.1). In both browsers I
have the same problem. If I close the browser, navigate to another web
page or switch to another desktop the screen stops blinking.

I've just made a recording of this bug and it appears the problem
happens on the report a bug page.

[Bug 63208] Re: Patches For Compiz/Beryl Compatibility

2007-05-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher
> Compiz/Beryl *WORKED* in edgy, and the edgy libwnck packages *have the
patches applied*.

no they didn't, you likely installed the patched version from the non-
Ubuntu compiz archive. We had some discussion with the guy working on
those packages after tracking a bunch of crasher sent on launchpad which
turned to be due to the patches, you can read bug #72804 about it

> You can't enable functionality like this in one version, then disable it in
> the next without users complaining.

That's why we didn't use those libwnck patches in Ubuntu

> So if ubuntu is now deciding to abandon that cutting edge advantage over a
> beauracratic upstream patch policy, I'd say that's a shame.

We don't do that, we just refuse to apply patches that might not be
accepted upstream and create a distribution specific API incompatibility
with them, especially that it's not easy to drop a patch and drop
compatibility then. Compiz works quite well in edgy, you just have to
use workspaces rather than the cube which is the default setup, it's
available on the desktop CD, there is a capplet to activate it and it's
also integrated with restricted-manager. Do you really think it's not as
easily to install and use than when it was on an external apt source?

The rest of your comment is just not worth replying. The cube is just an effect
and likely to not be used by default in the next. version. Lot of users are
happy with compiz using workspaces as it's working at the moment in Ubuntu,
exageration is not a way to argue and I don't think many users will switch
distributions only because of the compiz cube effect lacks make the workspace
switcher display one area which is a detail
