[Bug 130473] Drawer opens behind other windows when beryl window manager in use

2007-08-05 Thread John Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have a drawer in the top panel which opens behind any windows if I'm
using the beryl window manager. If I switch back to metacity, then
drawer opens on top of any open windows. I have focus follows mouse and
auto-raise enabled.

If I move the cursor away from the drawer button and over the uppermost
covering window (firefox in the screenshot), the drawer pops up. If I
move the cursor over another window which is covering the drawer (the
terminal window in the screenshot), then the drawer will not pop up
above other windows. I have to move them all away before I can access
the contents of the drawer.

[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd

2007-08-05 Thread Phil Bull
I have made some changes to the documentation. The section on 'Playing DVDs'
now reads as follows:

In order to play DVDs, you must install some additional software.
Unfortunately, DVD support cannot be provided by default in Ubuntu due to legal
and technical restrictions.

WARNING: Many commercial DVDs are encrypted and so require the use of
decryption software in order to play them. In some countries, the use of
such decryption software is not permitted by law. Verify that you are
within your rights in using it.

1. Install the following packages (see Add Applications):
* gxine
* libdvdnav4
* libdvdplay0
* libdvdread3
2. If you would like to play encrypted DVDs (see the legal note above), press
Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type the following into the screen
which appears, followed by the Return key:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

[Bug 94048] Re: [feisty] Slow gnome application startup due to /etc/hosts misconfiguration

2007-08-05 Thread Jhongy
Same problem here. Feisty 32bit. Using Network manager. AMD Turion x2
laptop. Atheros wireless.

The problem manifests itself for me as incredible desktop slowness when
connected to some wireless networks. Top shows no excessive CPU use or
any problem processes. Nothing interesting in the system log.

When I launch programs, they simply don't show up -- the panel shows
Starting x, and the application may load up after 30 seconds or
so, or even longer (sometimes not showing up at all). Right-clicking
network manager in Notification Area, and selecting Disable Wireless,
or changing to a different wireless Access Point, causes the
applications I am waiting for to suddenly appear!

slowness is a misnomer here -- uselessness is more like it.
Everything -- even gnome-terminal is affected. Firefox seems to have
connectivity -- but waiting for 30 seconds just for URLs to resolve
makes it pointless.

Interestingly, if I right-click and choose Disable networking, without
selecting disable wireless, the slowness usually does not stop.

It seems to be somewhat random -- it affects about 70% of APs I try to
connect to. (Invariably, only affecting the ones I *want* to connect
to). These are all unsecured, public access points.

Network Manager is managing all my connections -- the only change over
default I have made is adding some DNS server to the prepend list in
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf, as my router's DHCP/my ISP at home is flaky,
and I get DNS timeouts unless I statically configure DNS servers.
(problem has existed for years).

I notice that in my case, the loopback interface also didn't have a
hostname assigned in /etc/hosts. Will try adding and will report back as
to whether this fixes the problem.

*PLEASE* decide on an importance for this bug. Nothing more
irritating/embarrassing than taking your laptop to a coffee shop and
spending the entire time trying to figure out why everything is slow as
molasses.

No its not set in profile prefs.js because you don't have overwritten

For instance, the comment about gnome's bug #337252 points to a change in xterm

That's not recent.

By the way - to get correct information (rather than the miscellany of 2-3 year

So much about setting TERM=gnome - and here's your report.

Honestly: Does anybody at least know a work-around for this? It's pretty
annoying... Shift-F1 to Shift-F4 are completely unusable - regardless
whether one uses xterm or gnome terminal. Konsole also, even if it
simply eats the keystrokes (without displaying anything).

hmm - yes. It's a shame about the termcap package - hasn't been maintained for
several years. That's using a file that was last updated in March 2000. I
added the gnome entry late in 1999 - shortly after ncurses 5.0.

Eric Raymond's file is mostly (aside from reordering the entries to assert
creative input, and changing the version number) a copy of the ncurses 5.0
file with less than 500 lines added. At best it's a nuisance.

[Bug 130544] GNOME Panel menus close unexpectedly on specific mouse clicks

2007-08-05 Thread scott_karana
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When traversing down a Panel menu, the mouse selects the item under the
mouse. When traversing up the menu, there is a sort of dead area in
which the item under the mouse is NOT selected. For launchers, this is
merely a cosmetic error, of one pixel: for folders on the menu, the gap
has an additional pixel if the mouse is moved perfectly vertical: if the
mouse is quickly clicked on that second, higher, pixel, the menu will
disappear! If the mouse remains on the second pixel for a few moments
without clicking, or if it is moved horizontally, the selection seems to
catch up to the mouse, and there is no problem if you then click.

I found this error in regular use of the menus, however, so it's
certainly not arcane! It was rather disconcerting to have my menus close
on me for no apparent reason!

I cannot seem to take screenshots that contain the mouse, so I've not
provided one.

[Bug 128256] Re: Weird behavior of gtk controls

2007-08-05 Thread Tomasz
It looks like the bug is somehow triggered by having two keyboards
attached to the PC. One was connected by USB, second (my primary) by
PS/2. Now I have only the second one and I had no such misbehavior for
almost a week. I think I can still reproduce that bug, so if anyone can
help, I'm ready to test things.

[Bug 130545] Vino requires interactive keyring unlocking on the local display

2007-08-05 Thread Oded Arbel
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The problem is that when specifying a password under the remote
desktop preferences panel, whenever someone tries remotely to access
the computer, vino attempts to open the GNOME keyring. If the keyring
has yet to be opened, and interactive password dialog pops up on the
local display and the remote login process is paused until the keyring
password dialog is dismissed.

This problem makes vino useless as a remote control mechanism to allow a
user to control her own computer remotely as normally a user would log
in to her session and then go to another computer (possibly in a remote
location) and try to login remotely. If the keyring password has not
been entered yet, then the user would not be able to login remotely
unless the computer is attended locally by a person who has the keyring
password.

Steps to produce:
1. login to a new session
2. configure remote desktop to use a password and not to require confirmation
3. go to another computer and VNC to the first computer. After completing the
password entry dialog, a keyring password dialog would pop up on the first
computer and the VNC login would not complete until the keyring dialog is
dismissed.

[Bug 130581] rhythmbox plays distorted

2007-08-05 Thread Centaur5
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ever since I've upgraded to Gutsy Gibbon (which was at the release of
tribe 2) sound has been distorted when I play music. Until recently I
thought it was just the sound drivers but when I use a different program
to play mp3 and ogg files the sound is fine. Therefore, it must be a
problem with Rhythmbox.

[Bug 123078] Re: System - Quit takes a long time to appear

2007-08-05 Thread Paul van Genderen
When this happens, it might be caused by an unconfigured loopback
interface. To fix that, type this into a terminal:

sudo ifdown lo
sudo ifup lo

ifdown makes sure that /var/run/network/ifstate doesn't list lo
