[Bug 140610] Touchpad preferences panel doesn't appear with no xorg.conf

2007-09-17 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In the newly-updated version of gnome-control-center with touchpad
configuration options, touchpad options don't appear if the xorg.conf

this should probably be resolved.

[Bug 140611] terminal window opens up either too wide or too small, then text is not visible

2007-09-17 Thread Tommy Suriwong
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I did a sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade today (around 7pm)
and found that my terminal window is no longer usable. The cursor is
either off at the very top edge of the window when it starts up too
small. When the window opens up too wide (about the width of two
screens of my 1280 x 800 screen) the cursor is huge but again, no text
is visible.

If you try to type something, it seems like something is happening (for
example, cd to a new directory will change the title bar), but still
nothing is visible in the window

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are affected by bad X.org DPI detection

2007-09-17 Thread TJ
Sebastien, I'm not sure but I think the libgnome changes may be the
reason for a massive surge of reports about fonts becoming too small to
read and gnome-appearances-properties crashing, summed up by bug #140540
and all its duplicates. I found the problem and a fix and posted the
details there, but a patch will need to be released once the root cause
is found.

Summary: After the updates (which I thought might be caused by changes
in gnome-control-center & capplets-data) gconf is showing
/desktop/gnome/font_rendering/dpi = 50 rather than 96.

Could you check on this?

Public bug reported:

After installing the most recent upgrades (evening of 9/17/07, with
everything working fine after a previous update this morning), the
terminal becomes nonfunctional. Commands still appear to work, but it
opens with an extremely wide (about 3/4 of the screen) fixed width that
cannot be decreased, and typed commands do not appear, nor does the
standard command prompt ([EMAIL PROTECTED] `currentfolder`).
Occasionally a flashing horizontal black line will appear near the top
of the screen. Menu bars display but are non-functional. Disabling

[Bug 140602] Add two-finger scrolling/two-finger tapping to Touchpad options

2007-09-17 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I did notice that options for touchpad tapping, vertical scrolling, and
horizontal scrolling are now included in the Mouse preferences.
This is definitely a great improvement over having to configure these options
in xorg.conf - hardly a trivial task for new Windows converts.

However, there are still a few options that can't be configured from here that
would be incredibly helpful to have here.
The particular options I am referring to are:

* Sensitivity options - this is one of the things Walt Mossberg complained
about in his Ubuntu review...
* 1/2/3 finger tap - allow these to be assigned to right, middle, or left click
as the user wishes
* two-finger scrolling - this is what Macs use by default, and the synaptics
driver allows for this.
* circular scrolling - also available through Synaptics driver
* corner taps - these are quite useful on my MacBook, as I errantly tap a lot
but still want an actual button for right-click

Also, it may be a good idea to use Mac-like defaults for appletouch
touchpads and Windows-like defaults on all other touchpads - that way,
everything behaves as the user expects it to (in most cases)...

[Bug 140599] "Tap to click" option in Touchpad settings has no effect

2007-09-17 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

With the new updates to gnome-control-center in Gutsy, there is now options to
turn on/off tap-to-click, horizontal scroll, and vertical scroll.
However, checking "tap to click" does not enable tapping to click, even though
my touchpad (Apple touchpad on MacBook) supports it.
As a side note, I do have tapping disabled in my xorg.conf - but it seems like
the gnome-control-center options should still override this.

[Bug 140574] (Gutsy) gnome-mouse-properties does not switch touchpad tap-buttons

2007-09-17 Thread R. A. Rivas Diaz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When I check 'Left-handed mouse' on 'Mouse Orientation' the external
mouse and the synaptics touchpad buttons are correctly switched, but the
synaptics touchpad "tap-buttons" (simulated button clicks when you tap,
double-tap or triple-tap on the touchpad) keeps the default order (right
handed) which makes the tapping wrong. (single tapping keeps generating
the equivalent of the left click, but due to buttons being inverted, a
right click effect is what you get).

gsypantics also does not helps as this application does not have this
capability.

There are two ways to correct the "tap-buttons":

1. Editing xorg.conf and adding inside the synaptics input driver
configuration the following options:

Option "TapButton1""3"
Option "TapButton3""1"

2. Editing xorg.conf and adding inside the synaptics input driver
configuration the following option:

Option "SHMConfig" "true"

and using the synclient command to interactivelly update the tapbuttons,
with the following command:

  $ synclient TapButton1=3 TapButton3=1

The expected way is that this command should be executed whenever 'Left
handed mouse' is checked and the inverse executed when unchecked.

[Bug 140572] Gutsy Screen Birghtness using function keys Dell M1330

2007-09-17 Thread nick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Currently im working on a Dell xps M1330

The function keys to increase brightness are not working. I am able to
decrease the brightness at any point but to bring it back is not
possible. The screen does return to its brightness when i have left it
idle and then start using it again. This is a setting in the power-
management section that was changed.

The function keys were working before but this mornings round of patches
broke it.

thanks for all the help guys!!!

[Bug 136702] Re: nautilus 'replace file' dialog box could give more information

2007-09-17 Thread Rocko
I agree. It's even worse when nautilus hides the "skip all" etc window
behind another nautilus window so that it just appears to have frozen.

It would also be a nice feature in the "skip all" window if nautilus
continued to copy/move the files that is able to while it waits for your
input. At the moment you can set up a 1 file copy, leave the PC
because you expect it will take a long time, and when you come back you
discover it has copied only 10 files and is asking you about file 11.

[Bug 86670] Re: Flurry of password requests make evolution unusable with down email server

2007-09-17 Thread hggdh
OK, it happened again with me. I get a dialog with the usual "retry or
cancel" options. While I hit "retry", I am presented with the same
dialog again (for the same account). Evo only recovers when I cancel the
dialog -- I then can immediately hit send/receive, and it works.

I did save a backtrace, and will try to go thru it -- or, next time, I
will debug it to zero in the correct point in the code.

This is Evo 2.11.92/E-D-S 1.11.92. Since 2.12/1.12 is being uploaded
right now, I will also try it there.

[Bug 95946] Re: nautilus freezes when displaying a root system over sshfs

2007-09-17 Thread Louis
I have a very similar bug on Gutsy.

Nautilus hangs when I am accessing files (mp3) on a sshfs directory over
the internet. It hangs very rapidly (minutes) when over the internet
(ADSL) and it can take a few hours before hanging when over ethernet
(100mbps).

I on a P4 3ghz 64bit

2007-09-17 Thread Tanath
I have this problem too. The text can be copied & pasted, it's just too small
to be visible.
Started with gnome-terminal 2.18.1-1ubuntu2.
xterm works fine, and other fonts in most other apps are fine. amsn has an
error that pops up with invisible text too (the error started before, when I
first upgraded to gutsy).

[Bug 140571] "open with" in nautilus has a strange behavior

2007-09-17 Thread Louis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I select a text file in nautilus and go to the "open With" menu,
the sub-menu offers me Kate, Kwrite, Abiword, and Other. However,
regardless of which program I choose, nothing happens!

But, if I select a *.wmv file for instance, and choose to "open with"
VLC, then it opens in VLC just fine.

Also, if I only select the "open" option for the text file, it opens
normally in Gedit.

Finally, if I select a .JPG file, the same problem arises: nothing
happens if I select open with GIMP, or open with gthumb, or...

I am using ubuntu 7.10 on a P4 3.0ghz, 64bits.

Same problem here. This happened after an update for gutsy on Sept 17,

update released within 24 hours of this. Other users have reported the
same problem at this thread:

[Bug 140569] Gterminal not working on Gutsy as of latest updates 9/17/07 5:55pm pacific

2007-09-17 Thread nick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

As of 5:55pm pacific September 17 with the latest updates Gterminal not
working. It appears as though the font is just amazingly small. Attempts
to zoom in have not had any success. If i try to type i can see hat
appears to be a pixel moving across the screen, which im assuming is the
curser.

Im working on the new dell xps m1330 if that helps with anything.

thanks

[Bug 139857] Re: [Gutsy] Evolution right click "create rule from message" does not work

2007-09-17 Thread Peterix
I can confirm this - running evolution 2.11.92-0ubuntu1 package on Ubuntu Gutsy.
Creating filters/search folders from emails using the normal menu always works.

Using the right click menu, it's a little bit more complicated.
When left-clicking options in the 'create rule from message' it sometimes works
- but mostly it doesn't.
When right-clicking it always works.

Nevermind. Seems like the problem was the synaptics touchpad package,
which is being uploaded as i write. I tested the version in this thread
[1] and it works, so sorry for the spam.

[Bug 138277] Re: Gnome settings daemon doesn't work

2007-09-17 Thread Joey Stanford
Hi,

I've applied the fix that just hit the repositories. It worked however I
am unable to launch gnome-appearance-properties now. In fact, my
terminal font is so small that I've had to copy and paste this error
into gedit :-)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gnome-appearance-properties

I'm wondering if clearing out parts of .gnome2 might be worth a shot.

[Bug 135903] Re: gutsy: at-spi-registryd not starting automatically during gdmlogin

2007-09-17 Thread Francesco Fumanti
The problem has been fixed upstream: it was due because gdm looked for
at-spi-registryd at a wrong location. Now it is possible to specify the
location of the at-spi-registryd via the --with-at-spidir configure
argument. You can find more information in this thread on the gnome
mailing list:
