[Bug 145278] Re: [gutsy] getting "Error Printing: Too many failed attempts" error when printing through GtkPrintOperation

2007-10-10 Thread Herbert V. Riedel
to sum it up:

printing to file (either pdf or ps) works, since it doesn't get sent via
IPP

I haven't found yet(? -- see below for gedit)an application, which uses the gtk
printing API and does not fail to print via cups;
applications which I have tried so far:

gtk-demo
evince
evolution
eog
gnumeric
epiphany

except for gedit, which seems to be able to print; but I'm not sure which
printing API it uses, since the printing dialogs looks/feels different from the
applications listed above; maybe it uses the gnome printing API?

[Bug 66104] Re: scim: input freezes in various application under XIM mode

2007-10-10 Thread Ming Hua
** Summary changed:

- scim input freezes in various applications
+ scim: input freezes in various application under XIM mode

** Description changed:

- I filed a bug (#65489) against gnome-terminal. But since I've seen input
- freezing in firefox and gaim as well, I am opening a new bug against
- scim.
+ In gutsy, the default mode of scim (detemined by im-switch's settings
+ "scim") uses XIM mode. This may cause problems in some applications and
+ make it impossible to input anything, even if you choose the
+ English/Keyboard input method. This happens most often in nautilus, but
+ is also seen in gedit, gnome-terminal, etc.

- I am using edgy, and scim under en_US.UTF-8 locale. Sometimes, I cannot
- type anything into applications, such as gnome-terminal, firefox and
- gaim.
+ This bug has been around for a long time, it only became more visible
+ because of the change in the default settings of scim and the Ubuntu
+ package.

- Steps to reproduce:
+ There are two work arounds for this problem:

- 1. Make sure you are using scim. If you are not already, type "im-switch
- -s scim-pinyin" in a gnome terminal. Log out Gnome and then log back in.
+ 1. If you do not use any programs linked to libstdc++5 (very few of the
+ Ubuntu official packages do, one know exception is the fglrx video
+ driver for ATi cards; but plenty of third-party programs do, such as
+ firefox downloaded from www.mozilla.com, and Adobe's PDF reader), you
+ can use the scim-immodule setting in im-switch. To change the im-switch
+ setting, just run "im-switch -s scim-immodule" command.

- 2. Open a gnome-terminal.
+ 2. If you do not use the deadkeys (often seen on European keyboards, and if
you dont' know what a deadkey is, you are not using it), you can change scim's
"/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic" setting. The procedure to change this setting is:
+ (a) Set scim not to start automatically (because it's useless to change the
configuration file when scim is running) using the command "im-switch -s none".
 Log out and re-login.
+ (b) Edit your ~/.scim/config configuration file, change the
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic option to true.
+ (c) Reset scim to start automatically with command "im-switch -s scim". Log
out and re-login.

- 3. Press Ctrl-Shift-T for 5 times in very short intervals, to have 6
- tabs open in all.
-
- 4. If the gnome-terminal is still "alive" at this time. Type "exit" to
- close tabs one by one. You'll probably get a dead gnome-terminal when
- closing the second or third tab.
-
- For me, it's a show blocker, because it's very annoying and causes work
- loss.
+ If you are using programs linked to libstdc++5 as well as deadkeys,
+ there is no known workaround for you. You may try the scim-bridge
+ setting of im-switch (you need to install scim-bridge-* packages first),
+ but it's not clear whether it works or not.

I didn't want to fill the thread with more posts, so I emailed this to you.

That is interesting that it works for you. When I enable the restricted
driver and reboot. it says that my card does not support composite
extensions. I know it works, because I used to download the drivers and
install them from the ATI site, years ago with older Ubuntu releases.

Do you think I should file a bug report about it not working? I'm not
quite up-to-speed on how all the bug report procedures work in
launchpad. So I don't know if that is something they would care about.
Just wondering since you have more experience with it.

On a side note. I've often thought of just giving my video card to
Ubuntu, so they can make sure it works. It is kind of an obscure card.

ia32-libs package. I'm going to patch and rebuild and see if that fixes
it. Unfortunately, the ia32-libs package is almost 400MB of source

[Bug 151407] Re: Modified keyboard shortcuts not remembered

2007-10-10 Thread cwillu
Okay, it wasn't quite what I thought. If I close gedit normally, it
works.

It just happens that the only time I ever have it completely closed is
after a power failure, remote disconnect (running it over ssh), or other
similar circumstances.  My bad.

I would still expect the shortcuts to be saved even if the app was
killed later (as opposed to cleanly shut down).

[Bug 151145] Re: Evince print fails with Postscript driver

2007-10-10 Thread Matt Vickers
Thanks for taking a look Sebastien.

I attempted to print with eog, but exactly the same problem was
exhibited, the printer received data but never printed. Switching
drivers again worked. It is beginning to look like OpenOffice is the odd
one out in that it WILL print.

Obviously it's not only evince's problem, so thanks for helping get
closer to the cause. I haven't had experience troubleshooting printing
much before, so please let me know how to help and I will keep trying.

why not apply the workround in the installer or synaptic ?

I did look at some of the upstream reports a little while ago, but I
dont remember being convinced that there was any reason why a hack
couldnt be tacked onto the end of the gtk set sensitive code, providing
it respected the visibility status

Have you tried any experiments for yourself?

[Bug 150489] Re: Volume control jumps around with mousewheel

2007-10-10 Thread Eythian
If it makes any difference, I'm using the applet to control PCM volume.
It's pretty constant. What I got it doing yesterday (it's hard to tell,
but this is what it looks like), is that I turned the volume down one
wheel-click and it went from 76% to 0%, and then up one click and it
went from 0% to 76%. But that's not the normal distance, so for some
reason it's as if it thinks it should be muting. I guess, it's hard to
figure out.

Re: [Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it

2007-10-10 Thread ChrisC
This bug is VERY trivial I happened to be using monodevelop so heres
some mono code with 2 buttons, 1 with the bug and 1 using the work
round

(I have used this workround in c++ before)

protected virtual void OnGoButtonClicked (object sender,
System.EventArgs e)
{
woButton.Sensitive=false;
wButton.Sensitive=false;
}

click the go button

move the cursor over one of the 2 test buttons

hit the tab key and the go button looses the focus which re-enables the
buttons one with the work round

protected virtual void OnGoButtonFocusOutEvent (object o,
Gtk.FocusOutEventArgs args)
{
woButton.Sensitive=true;
wButton.Sensitive=true;

wButton.Hide();
wButton.Show();
}

The wButton shows the correct behaviour. afaik because is all a single
thread the button is never cleared and redrawn, but this hide/show is
enough to make it properly sensitive when the mouse cursor is over it

*** At the very least this should be implemented it synaptic and the
installer ***

I believe that with a simple bit of code in gtk set sensitive that
respects the visible status of the button, this issue would be fixed, I
am not even slightly convinced that this would have far reaching
consequences of a negative nature

At the very least sending a patch upstream would probably prompt what
they would feel the "correct" way of fixing it...

Given the very long history of this problem something like will have to
happen before a "proper" fix happens

[Bug 151417] alt+f2 should list history items from newest to oldest

2007-10-10 Thread Simon Ruggier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

In a terminal, as well as in KDE's alt+f2 dialog, hitting up arrow once
shows the most recently entered item. However, in GNOME's alt+f2

key until the widget scrolls up to if they want to see the most recent
item.

[Bug 116990] Re: Rhythmbox sound problems (clicking/snapping/crackling) when not using crossfading backend

2007-10-10 Thread Alexander Hunziker
This issue does *not* really have a workaround, because enabling the
crossfading backend can trigger other bugs. See Launchpad bug 149389 and
upstream bugs. Either or should really be fixed. Besides RB 0.11.x is an
unstable series.

[Bug 151407] Modified keyboard shortcuts not remembered

2007-10-10 Thread cwillu
Public bug reported:

Gnome has had the hidden preferences option to set keyboard shortcuts
directly for some time now. The functionality allows you to set a
keyboard shortcut by highlighting the menu item and pressing the key you
would like associated with it. This behaviour is broken in gedit.

Setting the shortcut works as expected as long as gedit remains open,
but those shortcuts are lost when you restart the program.

Normally, I'd consider such a problem to be my own fault, and duly
accept resetting my preferred shortcuts each launch as my penance for
using such non-standard behaviour. However, I've noticed that the
option is now exposed in the appearance control panel item in gutsy
('Interface | Editable menu shortcut keys'), and as such, I now feel
entitled to complain :p

My theory is that the menu accelerators are generated from the text of
the menu (or otherwise hardcoded), and that there is currently no
facility to override that. My theories being what they are, I don't
expect that I'm right, but anyways...

[Bug 125308] Re: [gutsy] esd makes diverse gnome apps freeze

2007-10-10 Thread Felipe Gil Castiñeira
I have built the amd64 packages with the patch applied, and it seems the
problem appears again (gnome-panel gets frozen).

In the next hours I will perform some tests (just now I'm far from the
computer with the problem), in order to confirm that the problem is
again esd.

  Open a Message.
  Select Menu Option: Message->Forward As->Redirect
  Add email address to TO field or CC field
  Send

[Bug 22876] Re: There is no way to control which sound device or mixer the keyboard shortcuts use

2007-10-10 Thread Guido Conaldi
Since the last updates I'm experiencing a similar issue on my dell xps
m1330 (Intel HDA audio with a Sigmetal STAC9228 codec): the multimedia
volume keys control the surround channel, which has no effect. It used
to control the Front channel.
