[Bug 150193] Re: Remote Login via XDMCP is not working in Ubuntu Gusty/7.10
Hi Jose Armando, make sure both machine have xnest (and openssh server) installed, and that you activated the XDMCP distant login on both. Make sure that the -geometry option is small enough to fit into your remote machine resolution (so, try 800x600). I also have a Dapper and a Gutsy and I managed to connect this way in both ways (A to B and B to A). Display :0 is the default display, used by the user logged locally on the target machine. You may try to connect to display :1, :2 or :3 whenever you get a /tmp/.Xn-lock error which simply means that display is already in use. In fact, when you log out abruptly, the machine doesn't automatically free up the display you were using. Answering to wormkid, I tried and successfully logout and login again no problem, so I don't know whay you're having this problem. You may try to close the Xnest window instead and reconnect using a different display, say :3 instead of :1. When you have used the 3 extra displays, you have to reboot the target machine in order for the /tmp to be cleaned up and have the 3 displays available again. brunus -- Remote Login via XDMCP is not working in Ubuntu Gusty/7.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150193 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I then connect the cable and try ping. I get: connect: Network is unreachable The I run the /etc/init.d/networking restart And suddenly, next ping works. [Bug 162664] Re: none of VLCs output modules play nice with Compiz
This bug actually applies to all of Ubuntu's video players, I'll edit it and attach it to the others I'm using (MPlayer and Totem). ** Also affects: mplayer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: totem (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Summary changed: - none of VLCs output modules play nice with Compiz + no video output module play nice with Compiz ** Description changed: - Binary package hint: vlc + This concerns Ubuntu Gutsy (and earlier versions). It was written for + VLC, but you can substitute [mplayer|totem|other video players] for VLC + anywhere in the following and it's still valid. It's a shame that even with Compiz working very well now, there is no suitable VLC output plugin that allows all the nice visual features to work correctly. I've tried everything I have installed by default: * X11 is the only one where Compiz effects work: Shadows are displayed correctly over running video, transparency works both for the VLC window and for windows above the video, and the window is correctly transformed by effects (eg, the cover-view task switcher). However, the video scaling is atrocious: it seems that only basic resizing is used, which looks horribly pixelated. Worse, subtitles are rendered in the video resolution, so even those are pixelated when the video is scaled (eg, full-screen). * XVideo looks great (eg, nicely-scaled, and even subtitles look good). However, all effects are broken: since only the "overlay patch" is seen by Compiz, shadows are drawn as black or green blobs, window transforms don't work (although when the transformed patch happens to appear over the "normal" area with the normal colors we get a patch of untransformed video), and any transparency disables the video. * The GL output is even worse than XVideo: it's simply drawn over everything, including VLC's menus (which are virtually unusable). * Funnily enough, the ASCII-art module actually works great—all transformations work correctly. But... it's ASCII. Something should be done to allow better interaction between VLC and Compiz's effects. I suppose an upgrade to the X11 mode would work (if I understand correctly it just paints the video on a normal window), perhaps using OpenGL in a background buffer to do pretty scaling, and drawing the OSD (including subtitles) above it, _after_ scaling. This is probably not lightning-fast, but that would only be a problem with HD video, which I don't expect to work through Compiz anyway except on very high-end machines. We might add some kind of automatic fall-back to whatever is the most efficient display mode in huge-video cases. -- no video output module play nice with Compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162664 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 162664] Re: no video output module play nice with Compiz
By the way, there is a patch that (almost) fixes this for MPlayer, there's some info at http://smspillaz.wordpress.com/2007/10/18 /unlocking-the-full-video-potential-of-your-video-card/ It's not perfect (maximizing breaks the aspect ratio, and if you make the window transparent you can see the (useless) blue rectangle of XV through it), but it's a start. It should probably be included in Ubuntu's mplayer. There are also a few hints on how to bypass Xv on other players at http://thedarkmaster.wordpress.com/2007/08/10/solving-video-playback-problems-in-compiz-fusion-beryl/ But this doesn't work great in VLC, because of scaling issues (as described above). -- no video output module play nice with Compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162664 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Linux is a progressive development and many of the tools I use have fixed issues I had in previous releases or added new functions that I now use. Balaji> I'm not expecting a significant change in the desktop. In fact between Feisty and Gutsy there IS a change in the desktop - Compiz. But I don't care about it. What I'm looking for is: 1. Better driver support for different printer, scanner models etc. 2. Better support of Wireless. My wireless connection setup is still a very complex procedure. 3. Bettter VPN support 4. POWER MANAGEMENT - This was promised to have improved in Gutsy. I see NO improvement at all. 5. Better Bluetooth support - I still can't send stuff to my laptop from my mobile. I don't know when I will send SMSes from my laptop. I know each one of them have a different software now, like vpnc or kbluetoothd etc. The thing is I want to use the GNOME version of these and reduce the disk space involved in installing multiple software. GNOME promised better work on this. Power management is a matter of the kernel. In the Gutsy release notes they said that the use of the new kernel improves power management. BULLSHIT. Driver support is dependent on their relationship with the community of programmers writing drivers like SANE or ALSA etc. I don't think they have good contacts anymore. Almost everything is broken once you migrate from Feisty. In migrating from one version of OS to the next, I don't want to keep redoing all the setup activities to work on every software and driver. Even restricted drivers was a problem. They don't have a generic kernel based driver from my laptop modem, but a 386 kernel based driver for the same modem is there! This is bad support indeed. There is no significant work for which UBUNTU charges for the services. I'm sure their services suck as much as Gutsy. Till Feisty I was a string supported of Ubuntu and loved it better than ANY OS. Gutsy is a gross disappointment indeed. They'll lose patrons at the rate they are rushing to ruin Linux. -Balaji On Nov 29, 2007 2:48 AM, anibal <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I do agree in one thing, is an anoying bug. [Bug 157099] Re: Automatic installation of DVD CSS support
Under the DMCA its illegal to develop, distribute, or use any tool that can break or bypass an encryption, which the libdvdcss2 library does just that, bypasses the CSS encryption system. Now there are certain exceptions, like security research, and the question is whether or not libdvdcss2 being used to only play back legally purchased DVDs on Linux because no other method exist, is a valid exception. This question can only be answered by passing legislation that modifies the DMCA or having a court decision saying that the libdvdcss2 library is a vaild exception to the DMCA. For the time being, I believe Ubuntu should handle this issue in a user- friendly but legally safe manner. This is what can be done when a user inserts a DVD with CSS encryption: Tell the user this disc cannot be played because of the CSS encryption Tell them that there is a library called libdvdcss2 that can be used to play back their DVD Tell them this library isn't included in Ubuntu for legal reasons, and that it can be found in third-party repositories -- Automatic installation of DVD CSS support https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157099 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I do not even think there has been a Canonical response to this bug yet! I said this earlier, but here it is again: This issue was totally fixed for me on two seperate laptops running amd64 Gutsy one day last week when a few updates came through Update Manager, and I use full Compiz, AWN and have nVidia Go 7600 on one of the laptops.. So if people have updated and still get this issue then it must have different reasons, but obviously someone is trying to fix it despite lack of communication on launchpad. By the way, disabling ipv6 didn't do squat for me. I think it was the updates that upgraded Gnome to 2.20.1 that did it. > 2. But then again, there is so much to monitor and I only look at what interests me, which i suspect most people do. But don't be fooled by the blandness of the desktop! Yes, it may look like Fiesty but don't forget that all packages are newer versions. To think that the desktop should look significantly different between releases is a side effect of having used Windows too long! Linux is a progressive development and many of the tools I use have fixed issues I had in previous releases or added new functions that I now use. > Balaji > -- GnuPG Key ID: ECB18ABA Fingerprint: FDF3 91FC F5BC 1164 E217 315E 337E 219B ECB1 8ABA -- [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151544 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for meta-gnome2 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot
That is not true. This is not a problem with nvidia. I think let us stop beating around the bush and concentrate on the problem. It was never a problem in Feisty. What has changed since October end is Ubuntu. I have had the same laptop since October 2006 and have been running Dapper, Edgy and Feisty with no issues whatsoever. It is only Gutsy that is the problem. So for goddamned sure. IT IS A PROBLEM WITH ONLY AND ONLY UBUNTU AND NO OTHER DEVICE OR OBJECT AROUND. It is really disappointing to see two phenomena here: 1. Ubuntu support is not taking enough action on this bug. This should be a priority. It is a shame to the Ubuntu makers that they can't give an important bug its rightful place. 2. They are simply beating around the bush to try to transfer the blame to someone else. It is the kernel that is the culprit. The 386 kernel is very very slow and I find that the generic kernel is not very much improved either. The older kernel 2.6.17 or 2.6.20 were way better. Even now, if you try using those kernels, GNOME loads fast. Clearly it is a problem with the kernel. It is the haughtiness of the kernel writers that they fail to recognized the problem and fix it. When Ubuntu has almost no market share as against Microsoft, these guys act so pricey and all as if they know everything about the problem and keep throwing the blame from one to another. I have no doubt that they can NEVER EVER stand Microsoft's competition, if things go down the path of ruin in this manner. There is NOTHING (I wish I could write in bigger letters to make it clear) significantly useful added in Gutsy at all. Why did they make this release? Most people have gone back to Feisty. I don't want Compiz or any other BULLSHIT - what I want is a fast useful machine. Re: [Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot
I also have ATI. In the ubuntu forums the conclusion was that there were several problems causing the same symptom (slow log in). One was the hosts file that vampire666 mentioned. It was fixed by adding you machine name to the localhost. Another problem was compiz beeing used as the window manager. Some people reported that replacing compiz with metacity (feisty Window Manager) the problem was solved... I guess I'll try that On Nov 28, 2007 5:10 PM, vampire666eng <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I guess it's not that as the problem effects also users that have Ati > cards, and removing completely compiz doesn't solve the problem (as said > by users in the uBuntu forums). > > > -- > [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151544 > You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber > of the bug. > -- [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151544 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for meta-gnome2 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 172628] Opening text document on samba share fails
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 95414 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/95414 Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit Browse to a smb:// share with Nautilus, the open a text document by double-clicking it's icon or by right-clicking and selecting 'Open with "Text Editor"'. Often times, and for unknown reasons I am presented with the following error: Could not open the file smb://path/to/file.txt Unexpected error: Internal error Along with the error is a "Cancel" button. After this initial error, subsequent attempts to open the same file will usually fail, in the same manner. One must first close gedit then try again(which may or may not work), or first click the cancel button, and then try again without closing gedit(which always works). [Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot
I guess it's not that as the problem effects also users that have Ati cards, and removing completely compiz doesn't solve the problem (as said by users in the uBuntu forums). -- [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151544 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for meta-gnome2 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
