[Bug 174323] Totem dies with ogg file

2007-12-05 Thread Ranjan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

[New Thread -1359291504 (LWP 20394)]
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 82 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I've stopped using compiz entirely as a result of this (and other compiz
related bugs). Out of curiosity, do you use multiple displays? I'm
wondering if the problem is related to Nvidia's TwinView, or something
more subtle.

[Bug 174313] next track isn't playing if current can't be played

2007-12-05 Thread aLTer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I have my favorite online music site. It was just fine when I used
winamp under ms windows, but now I use only Ubuntu and there is annoying
bug or wrong behavior.

When I press on some album I get m3u file like this:
#EXTM3U

#EXTINF:0, ..: Guns N' Roses

group: Guns N' Roses

#EXTINF:0, ..: Use Your Illusion [Part One] (1991)

album: Use Your Illusion [Part One] (1991)

#EXTINF:182,Guns N' Roses - Right Next Door To Hell

#EXTINF:184,Guns N' Roses - Live And Let Die
...etc...etc

It automatically handled by totem, but as you can see first two entrys are just
comments. winamp just skips them and sound is playing.
totem is not. He popups with something like (I can't place it here, cuz it
isn't in english) "address not found" and stops, so I have to manually click
"OK" and then click on 3rd entry (first song in album) to start playing.
It's *very* annoying. I tryed to find some option about "skip broken URLs" or
something, but seems there is no such option.

Please, add option (I assume it should be on by default) 'skip m3u-
comments' or 'skip current track on error' or something.

[Bug 164640] Re: Build Firefox 3 against a subpixel-patched cairo

2007-12-05 Thread Matvey Kozhev
There is another way to achieve this: build Firefox with --enable-
system-cairo, but apply a patch to the system libcairo 1.4 to export
cairo_surface_show_page - the only reason why Firefox depends on 1.5,
because this function was only exported in 1.5.

For a number of reasons which I hold to be obvious, using an external
Cairo is preferable. Attached is a debdiff that adds the export. It is
intended to be applied to version 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.1.

I built Firefox 3.0b2pre with a patched Cairo on my home machine, and it
builds and runs correctly.

[Bug 174301] desktop-file-utils has too many dependent packages

2007-12-05 Thread Allan MacKinnon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-file-utils

desktop-file-utils should only be a dependency of ubuntu-desktop (and
similar metapackages) and no other packages.

The reason: I need to change the default file associations in an Ubuntu-
based distro I'm making but as things stand now it will conflict with
the Ubuntu version and will be overwritten if it is updated. If I
change the name of desktop-file-utils to escape this problem I'll end up
having to repackage every package that refers to openoffice.org (at the
very least) and that's just crazy since it would mean repackaging dozens
or hundreds of packages.

If the ubuntu-desktop package was the only package listing desktop-file-
utils as a dependency I could easily rename the package and change the
defaults without worry. However the below packages are also dependent
on desktop-file-utils:

openoffice.org-common
xdg-utils
nautilus
gnome-control-center
thunar
zim
ufraw
gpar

I've read
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/70105 and
can see why that change was made. Still, I'm hoping for a way to unlink
the dependency. Would listing it as a 'Recommend' in the above packages
help any?

[Bug 173432] Re: gnome-appearance-properties no wallpaper add in GUI on Hardy

2007-12-05 Thread jerrylamos
As of 20071204 Hardy Ubuntu daily-live updated, Appearance Preferences
Background Add still doesn't work. That's using Ubuntu's normal display
manager Gnome.

FYI, 20071204 Hardy Xubuntu daily -live updated does add the background,
using Xubuntu's normal display manager XFCE.

Looking at the "black box", would seem to be either Gnome or else Gnome-
Ubuntu interaction.

(let's just say 75%). I later use [Fn + Down Arrow] to lower the
brightness to be below 75%. Within a few minutes, the brightness
automatically reverts to 75%, the level originally set by the Brightness
Applet.

I can't determine the frequency. It seems that the Brightness will only
revert to the level set in Brightness Applet once per boot, and that any
[Fn + Down] modifications made after that will not revert.

[Bug 173861] Re: firefox crashes after upgrading to libcairo2 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.1

2007-12-05 Thread ayurchen
This happens not only with Korean fonts!
I'm using Serene raster font from xfonts-bolkhov package for GUI interface.
After upgrade to libcairo2 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.1 no gtk-based program could be
started - all gave "Floating point exception". After logging out and logging
back in, the Gnome session was totally unusable. Rolling back to libcairo2
1.4.10-1ubuntu4 solved the problem.

There is a number of reports in Ubuntu forum about firefox giving off
"Floating point exception" at startup, and how disabling certain plugins
makes it work. So it seems that it is not limited to fonts.

[Bug 174212] Re: Cannot save file to FTP server (on desktop)

2007-12-05 Thread David Bensimon
@Pedro

1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
a) Places>Connect to server
b) Enter valid FTP server specifications
c) Desktop link is created automatically
d) Create document in Open Office or gedit
e) Save file directly to FTP server [Cannot find FTP from save menu]
f) Tried dragging and dropping FTP to the quick-save (favorites) menu

2. the behavior you expected, and
a) I expected the servers I am connected to to be in the list of disks (since
they are, in fact directories and should be represented as such in the GUI)
b) I expected to be able to drag and drop a link to a server into the
quick-save/favorites menu

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
a) FTP server was not added to the list
b) Open office crashed, gedit did not, either way, the file is still not able
to be saved directly to FTP

Workaround: Save to local disk, drag file to ftp server. (This is a
workaround, but if I am not able to write to disks it does not help
much)

Hope This Helps

D

[Bug 174225] [nautilus] thumbnails remain after pictures have been deleted

Nautilus has a bug: the automatically created thumbnails of pictures,
aren't automatically deleted when the pictures they refer to, are being

[Bug 174212] Re: Cannot save file to FTP server (on desktop)

2007-12-05 Thread David Bensimon
I also cannot rename the FTP server with a new "connection nickname"
once on the desktop.

Although the freeze is specific to Open Office, I still can't get a
program like gedit to save directly to FTP. This is a functionality that
those two other operation systems have, and definitely one which is
wanted on Ubuntu. The following is a screenshot of what happens when I
try adding the FTP to the quick-save menu.

[Bug 174212] Re: Cannot save file to FTP server (on desktop)

2007-12-05 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 174200] "Next Song" doesn't work with Last.fm

2007-12-05 Thread Dan Lenski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

First, I would just like to say that I am very happy to see Last.fm
support added to Rhythmbox... thank you!

Now, the one problem I have is that the "Next Song" button doesn't work
for me! When I am playing my Neighbor Radio stream, if I press the
"Next Song" button nothing happens other than that button getting grayed
out! The only way to skip a song is to stop and then restart the
stream, which causes a new song to be chosen.

( Because of this bug, as well as the lack of tag and neighbor display,
I mostly use BMPx for listening to Last.fm. I would consider Rhythmbox
to be a much better and more polished player overall, but BMPx does have
the edge in terms of a really nice Last.fm interface. )

[Bug 174191] Re: screensavers cause high CPU usage

2007-12-05 Thread Gene Caldwell
Actually you may very well be correct on my second part of the problem.
However I am not sure why that makes it less a bug because it only lasts
for 30 minutes before it goes to sleep ? why on earth would an
application designed to be "green" friendly race the CPU until it goes
to sleep ?

Second, I already know that I need to select a more PC friendly screen
saver, thats why I have reported the bug (doh ! ) ( :P ), however the
less curious people that are just now switching to linux will have no
clue that the screen saver they selected is racing the CPU unless the
have learned the TOP command or know that a CPU system monitor is
available AND that it is not normal for a CPU to race when NOT being
used. - most people don't know that %100 CPU is not good, and most
people would not know that it is happening either.

3rd, hummm, while I have been using Ubuntu for 3+ years now, I have
never been able to get xscreensave to work, I have no desire to be a
linux guru, or expert, just skilled enough to configure use, minor
repairs, etc. My first choice for a screensaver is ElectricSheep, thats
the only screen saver I want and it requires xscreensaver, and I have
never been able to get it to work even though its in the repo, which
leads to a second problem, if its in the repo, then it should work, but
after doing much research, it looks like the only people that are
capable of making ElectricSheep work on a Gnome system are the Linux
gurus.

4th, I have no clue what rss-glx is, but once again, why would removing
this fix the 100% CPU racing problem ? it will still be there in the
code will it not ? it will just remove the problem from my computer if
you are correct, but the bug will still exist in the code. (doh again !
)

So, just to be clear, I am trying to report a bug in the bug reporting
forum, not find a work around to a problem... :) but thanks for
confirming the problem , hehehe,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it,
which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in gnome-menus.

[Bug 174188] Re: Cannot open 'jpg' files

2007-12-05 Thread Murat Güneş
It's a PNG image, incorrectly named. When renamed to "tux", and then
back to "tux.jpg" again, eog will open it without complaining. I'll
search for the possible reasons of this behaviour in the upstream bug
tracker and elsewhere. This probably qualifies as a duplicate of bug
#172416.

[Bug 161091] Synaptic causes multiple menu items

2007-12-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Version: Ubuntu 7.10

When adding or removing software via Synaptic that registers (or un-
registers) Gnome menu items, the Gnome menu list shows duplicates of
menu items when viewed. For example, after installing Wireshark via
Synaptic, my Gnome menu shows duplicates of all existing items such as
under "Applications->Internet":

  Evolution Mail
  Evolution Mail
  Firefox Web Browser
  Firefox Web Browser
  Pidgin Internet Messenger
  Pidgin Internet Messenger
  Thunderbird
  Thunderbird
  Wireshark
  Wireshark
  Wireshark (as root)
  Wireshark (as root)

All menus show duplicates and Wireshark was just an example of an
application I installed recently that cause the menu to show these
duplicates.

[Bug 174191] Re: screensavers cause high CPU usage

2007-12-05 Thread Miguel Martinez
I first wanted to say that I've also seen that behaviour.

Now, I'd also like to point out that the second part of your bug isn't
strictly true. I believe that the default settings blank out the screen
after a certain amount of time (I think it's either 30 minutes or an
hour), so after that time the screensaver will stop draining CPU.
However, having high CPU usage during idle time is not something
desirable on laptops, so it might be interesting to modify the default
blank out time if a laptop is detected.

Finally, three possible workarounds if you want to have screensavers and still
have low CPU usage:
1) Select a specific non-draining screensaver/blank screen (doh!)
2) Substitute gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver. The added configurability
might also help (doh! number one revisited)
3) Uninstall rss-glx. This will remove the 3D screensavers, which are usually
the life-draining ones. (doh! This Miguel guy doesn't look really bright)
