[Bug 93847] Re: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor

2007-12-08 Thread FrankyT
I'm experiencing similar excessive usage. Intermittently spiking the CPU to
80-100%, (and reducing other high CPU tasks in the process), and running
normally at 10-30%. monitoring the system without dramatically affecting the
processes monitored is a must for this type of utility.

[Bug 175041] Re: the audio recording does not work while using the microphone

This bug is unfortunately invalid as reported. Firstly, it doesn't seem
to be directly related to the yelp package. Secondly the skype package
is not supported by Ubuntu. Thirdly, for audio issues, I'd recommend
you visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound and try the
troubleshooting techniques described at

[Bug 175038] segfault after installing font

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Install the font 'Dymsmall' from here:

crash.

When Nautilus crashes with this segfault it will do so in a very non-
friendly manner due to bug #153381.

This occurs on a Gutsy installation on a dual AMD64 system running the
i386 release.

[Bug 175037] tooltips disable mouse, take too long to go away

2007-12-08 Thread Sean Middleditch
Public bug reported:

Running Hardy, with gtk 2.12.3-1, metacity 1:2.21.2-0ubuntu2.

Whenever a GTK tooltip (like in the main menu, or toolbar buttons in
Epiphany, for example) appear, mouse buttons no longer work. Clicking
on anything has no effect at all. Furthermore, moving the cursor off of
the widget that invoked the tooltip does not immediately cause the
tooltip to disable. It takes a second or three for it to go away. This
basically results in tooltips popping up and disabling my desktop for
around 2 seconds at a time. This has been happening for a week or two
now, possibly ever since I upgraded to Hardy.

This is most noticable on bookmark toolbar entries in Epiphany, but it's
definitely happening in all other GTK based apps, too. This does NOT
happen with tooltips in Firefox, or with title-tag link/image tooltips
in the actual browser view of Epiphany. Only with the native GTK
tooltips.

This behavior also occurs when the pc is left on and the screensaver

[Bug 175031] file-roller right-click extract here (for RAR) does not work

2007-12-08 Thread Gaspard Leon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

file-roller hung when extracting from a solid rar archive with multiple
files.

I right-clicked a multi-part rar archive and tried to extract it, and it
failed to extract, waiting at the extracting screen forever.

I then tried opening the archive in file-roller, and it opened ok, I
clicked Extract, then in the Extract dialog, clicked Extract... nothing
happened

So then I went to a terminal and typed unrar e and it
worked..

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2007-12-08 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I have created a tracker bug about this issue in Gnome Bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=502609

The GStreamer and Totem bugs that this bug is currently linked to
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350311
and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344415
are not really on point (in that, even if they are solved, this bug would not
be fixed). Could somebody please remove those bug watches and link this
Launchpad bug to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=502609 ? Then we can
correctly depend on that upstream bug's status etc.

That bug has links to the other two bugs anyway.

Jeff, 34 seconds is still considered a long login time in my opinion, edgy
loaded much faster than this. Actually, my desktop with gusty loaded much
faster than my laptop.

[Bug 173861] Re: [CVE-2007-5503 security fix regression] firefox crashes after upgrading to libcairo2 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.1

2007-12-08 Thread Jason Kim
Adding onto severity of this situation:
Korean blogosphere is almost overloaded with warning messages telling readers:
"Do NOT update libcairo2!"

The majority of Korean users use Gulim.ttc and Batang.ttc, since using ones
supplied with Ubuntu (Baekmuk) isn't so great with anti-aliasing.
This update rendered, probably thousands of users' computers unusable.
Some linux-savvy users would have figured it out that it was the font problem
by checking logs etc,
but new users just can't do anything about it, and is left with absolutely no
applications running
(all of them that use cairo is crashing with floating point exception whenever
applicable font is used in application)

This "looks" like Firefox is the problem, but you have to realize that
many Asian users use English version of OS, and only time they encounter
their language is in a web browser, so that's why so many bugs are filed
about Firefox crashing.

[Bug 175003] Applet for viewport switching does not show correctly

2007-12-08 Thread MarioTani
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Yesterday there was not this problem.

My workspace switcher is set with 4 columns and 1 row, but today it does
appear in 4 column 2 rows... the lower row is "empty" as there are no
workspaces there but it make the other workspaces 1/4 then before (so it

[Bug 174980] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in Object::free()

2007-12-08 Thread Oliver Gerlich
The PDF file states that I'm not allowed to transfer it over the internet
without consent of the author. Also I didn't find exactly this file
(SPR6L45GR0.pdf) on the Toshiba homepage; but I found this similar user manual
on the web which also makes evince crash sometimes:
http://www.manualnguide.com/download/manual-guide/toshiba-equium-l40-users-manual.html

Also I found a PDF very similar to the original one on the Toshiba homepage, at
http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/userman-20070719163413.zip . This
PDF also makes evince crash immediately.
(if the link breaks, go to
http://de.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_manuals.jsp
and search for the german manual for Satellite L40 Notebooks).

[Bug 173861] Re: [CVE-2007-5503 security fix regression] firefox crashes after upgrading to libcairo2 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.1

2007-12-08 Thread Jason Kim
Same happened here, but I found out that ANY newly font will cause this problem.
For example, I was using anorexia, one of artwiz fonts (available by apt-get)
for Orage Clock in xfce-panel.
(For those who don't know, it's the clock application for Xubuntu, and I
changed the font of time display)

After updating, xfce-panel just did not start on bootup, so for an end-user,
the computer is completely broken.
(nothing can be done in X)
I had to delete my ~/.config, and took me a while to figure out why this
happened.

So, from what I tried,
artwiz fonts
Gulim.ttc, Batang.ttc (Korean fonts)
cause this problem, but there were absolutely no problems before doing an
update.

[Bug 174999] Gnome main menu can't be activated when clicking at the top of the screen

2007-12-08 Thread Oded Arbel
Public bug reported:

This problem appears only when "desktop effects" is enabled - with out
it the menu access is OK:

The problem is that for good usability you want the main menu to be very
accessible. In Ubuntu's GNOME this requirement is met by positioning the
menu on the top left corner of the screen making the target size to hit
it infinite in size (see Fits Law). The problem is that with "desktop
effects" enabled if the cursor is thrown to the top left corner then it
can't activate the menu - although it looks like it should, clicking the
first 2 top most pixels of the screen does not trigger the menu (or any
other launcher for that matter - it might not actually hit the panel).

The result is very poor usability - a-la MS-Windows 95 through 2000
where the start button was a few pixels off from the bottom left corner
- making it difficult to hit as you have to either carefully approach
the menu in order to click it or throw the mouse to the top of the
screen and then bring it back just a bit.

Thanks Sebastien

I was able to add the Gnome "start-up" buttons (in my case Applications,
Raccourcis, Sytème) but somehow its not as nice as Mint Linux look. In fact
I've had this happen a couple of times with Ubuntu in the past and there
still doesn't seem to be a bug fix that I've heard of.

Perhaps it might be better for me to switch to KDE if its more stable.

initial screen with various options came up with no problem and I was
able to navigate options with arrow and function keys. However when I
selected *any* particular option using enter on the keyboard the cd
light started flashing but the system just hung. This occurred for ALL
options in the menu and also occurred if I allowed the 30s to run down
without intervention from the keyboard.

This behavior also occurs when the pc is left on and the screensaver
kicks in. Attempting to switch users using the fast-user-switch-applet
results in a white screen. Pressing Alt+S will reload gdm, however this
is probably not the desired solution. A group of users have seen this
same issue as seen here:

[Bug 24280] Re: applications run through gksu cannot use themes in ~/.themes

2007-12-08 Thread Cameron Gorrie
How about this for a solution:

Situation:
The user changes her theme to a non-standard one installed by downloading an
archive file and installing it with GNOME's appearance properties application.

Problem:
Applications launched by the user via. a "sudo" or "gksu" command do not
reflect the user's theme.

Explanation:
The root user may not have had the user's theme selected, had their own theme
selected by an administrator using the root account graphically (which as far
as I know is not a good idea), or had the user's theme selected but cannot find
it because it is not in their .themes directory.

Solution:
Allow gksu to change environment in such a way that the program launched by
gksu has the user's theme. Whether this is by changing environment variables to
flag the GTK program, pointing the program to a different gconf configuration,
or something else (hopefully decided by someone with a much deeper knowledge of
GNOME and GTK than myself), it should not change GTK or GNOME properties for
any other root-run program but the one launched by gksu.

Rationale:
Modifying sudo to fix a minor gtk appearance bug seems like a very bad idea.
However, gksu is gtk-based and as such should integrate as perfectly as
possible into that environment. Also, this solution would allow the use cases
where the root account is using that account graphically in GNOME/GTK to act
correctly (i.e. run using the root's theme rather than the user's theme), if
implemented correctly.

What is the general consensus on this solution?

Hello Pedro,

long to send by mail. It mostly appears with mixes from Djs... These are
mostly large files for example: 70 mb to 100 mb.

The best I can do is give you a couple of examples.. I got them through
limewire.

These are the songnames:

dj cObK -electro.Minimal mix live 2007- (Antoine Clamaran, Sven Väth,
Eric Prydz, Fernando Spiggia, Blende, Tastemakers, alexander maier)
After Bar live villa rouge.mp3

dj PIGI - Winter Tribal Promo Mix 1.0 - 2007 - Italy - tribal tecno
house progressive minimal WMC dj vibe tenaglia zabiela ramirez ralf
massimino.mp3

Hope this will help you?!

thanks for your
 time,

Nuno

[Bug 174934] lcd-filter patch is using wrong parameters for FT_Library_SetLcdFilter

2007-12-08 Thread Sylvain Pasche
Public bug reported:

Brandon Wright found an issue with the lcd-filter patch:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10301#c21

quote:
". In fact, the original
Ubuntu-modified changeset to Cairo has a significant error where they use
FC_LCD_FILTER_* definitions where they should be using FT_LCD_FILTER_* to pass
to FT_Library_SetLcdFilter. I checked the headers, and the definitions don't
correspond. This leads me to believe that their changes never did what they
were supposed to in the first place."

[Bug 154679] Re: Can't mount a LUKS volume after unmounting

2007-12-08 Thread Peter Wainwright

Looks like it maybe related to Bug #148003.

IMHO, it's a race between udev and cryptsetup (libdevmapper).

I "fixed" it by removing /etc/udev/rules.d/65-dmsetup.rules.

This file seems to have been introduced by a recent Ubuntu patch.
Presumably there was a good reason for it, but it causes havoc.

[Bug 157762] Re: Yelp crashes for external documents, bookmarks

2007-12-08 Thread keyboardashtray
Thank you for the work on this, I appreciate it - I switched to Kubuntu
about a month back, so unfortunately I no longer have Yelp, Firefox,
etc. installed.

Just to give one last detail, in case it is relevant: I first noticed
and posted the bug after doing the automatic update from Ubuntu Feisty
to Ubuntu Gutsy. However, before I switched to Kubuntu, I attempted a
clean install of Ubuntu Gutsy from the Live CD, to check if Yelp works
alright from a clean install. I still encountered the same bug after the
default clean install.

Thanks again.

[Bug 156643] Re: Internal and external links diplay and print problem

2007-12-08 Thread Sisyphe
Adding the pdfborderstyle={/S/U/W 0} to the hyperref package when
producing a pdf suppresses all visual clues as to the existence of
hyperlinks in the document. A strange idea to me : you create a pdf with
hyperlinks yet there is nothing that tells the user that some part of
the text is a link until, by chance, his cursor changes when passing
over the link.

Anyway, let's not confuse the method of creation of the pdf with the
display and print of the document. Evince and kpdf do the latter and
usually the user (I mean the person reading the doc) has no control on
how it was produced.

When Michael above says that these boxes were probably present in the
documents in the past, he is right. For as long as I've used latex, I
have made documents with those red boxes around links. And for years now
I was able to see them in kpdf, xpdf and acroread (I don't use evince
much to remember how it was then) when displaying the document but
somehow they were ignored when printing. Now with latest versions of
evince and kpdf (but not xpdf nor acroread), those red boxes are also
printed and that is both ugly and useless.

Thank you Michael for your suggestion but I really want the best of both
worlds : pdf with hyperlinks clearly visible on screen but invisible on
paper. That's what we had in the past.

Now why has this changed ? Is this a bug or a feature ? When someone
creates a pdf and puts those red boxes around links, does he intend to
have them on screen only or on paper as well ? What shoud the reader do
? I for one wish this behaviour could be set as an option in the reader.
If it can't, I'd rather go back to the former behaviour.

[Bug 152917] Re: evolution appointment timezone issues

2007-12-08 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Yes, that's still a problem in gutsy. I just tried. I've also discovered
that the timezone configuration isn't displayed even though it's checked
in the view menu.

This time, I did the following:
1) opened evolution and selected calendar view.
2) double-clicked on the top field in my day-view to create an all-day event.
3) that dialog doesn't show the timezone setting. In the View-menu, it's
selected.
4) I unselected and selected the timezone setting in the view-menu. Now it's
visible again.
5) I selected a time-zone from the world map.
6) wrote a short summary
7) saved.
8) double-clicked the new event. The time-zone setting is not visible, even
though it's checked in the view-menu.
9) unselected and reselected the timezone setting in the view menu and had a
look at it. The old timezone is displayed.

[Bug 153256] Re: eog hangs when I try to open e second image

2007-12-08 Thread David Prieto
I am experiencing a very similar problem in Hardy, where only second
double-clicked image actually open EOG. I mean, if I double-click an
image file nothing happens, but if I doulble click it (or any other
image) again, EOG opens alright.

If I double-click a third image nothing happens, but the fourth works.
And so on.

[Bug 174877] Re: Notification Area icon the wrong size

2007-12-08 Thread CatKiller
I'm using 7.10 (Gutsy). Here are the screenshots. I made the panels a
bit bigger so that you could see that the icon doesn't scale. The
gnome-panel has icons of 48 pixels high, and the AWN has icons of 60
pixels high. The icon theme is Human, the Ubuntu default.

If there's anything else you need to know, just ask.

[Bug 164640] Re: Build Firefox 3 against a subpixel-patched cairo

2007-12-08 Thread Sylvain Pasche
By "subpixel-patched cairo", I'm guessing you mean the patch by David
Turner to enable LCD-filtering (known as 02-cairo-1.4.8-lcd-
filter-2.dpatch in Ubuntu cairo patches).

This patch has been ported for cairo 1.5, and is available at:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10301

I hope that this will be included in upstream cairo. Otherwise, patching
the bundled cairo version inside Xulrunner/Firefox would be the way to
go.

I'm actually using this patch in my own Firefox build (no system cairo)
and it works pretty well.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-12-08 Thread dennda
I am not perfectly sure that it is network-managers fault either.
I properly removed it but the difference wasn't that huge.
I still need to check that on other systems, though.

Isn't there any proper way to tell which process takes how long during login?
If that was possible we could easily find out what is making this huge
difference (that needs to be fixed as far as I am concerned).

Any hints on that?

regards

[Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot

2007-12-08 Thread Jeff Fortin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 128803 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/128803

You use system>admin>network. That way your interface is configured
without network manager and it is fast. The only problem is for laptop
users like me who need to switch between networks very often, network-
manager is VERY much better at that.

By the way you should comment on the main bug, not in the duplicate?
To remove network manager, just find it in synaptic and remove it. You have to
know how to configure your network with the other user interface afterwards
however, so I suggest you practice with that first.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-12-08 Thread Jeff Fortin
Oh yeah and I forgot to mention that of course all these tests were done
~empirically (cold boot, one thing changed at a time). The second "34
seconds!" time is, of course, not significative compared to "no network
interace configured".

Furthermore, removing compiz + awn reduces the login time by 5
additional seconds (much less than I thought; I thought it would chop
off 15 seconds).

Same issue for me in 2.20.0 under Ubuntu 7.10.
It can only find the file IF I happened to be AT the file folder in which the
file is contained. For example, it cannot find a file on the desktop when the
