I'm experiencing similar excessive usage. [Bug 175037] tooltips disable mouse, take too long to go away
Public bug reported: Running Hardy, with gtk 2.12.3-1, metacity 1:2.21.2-0ubuntu2. Whenever a GTK tooltip (like in the main menu, or toolbar buttons in Epiphany, for example) appear, mouse buttons no longer work. Clicking on anything has no effect at all. Furthermore, moving the cursor off of the widget that invoked the tooltip does not immediately cause the tooltip to disable. It takes a second or three for it to go away. This basically results in tooltips popping up and disabling my desktop for around 2 seconds at a time. This has been happening for a week or two now, possibly ever since I upgraded to Hardy. This is most noticable on bookmark toolbar entries in Epiphany, but it's definitely happening in all other GTK based apps, too. This does NOT happen with tooltips in Firefox, or with title-tag link/image tooltips in the actual browser view of Epiphany. [Bug 173861] Re: [CVE-2007-5503 security fix regression] firefox crashes after upgrading to libcairo2 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.1
Adding onto severity of this situation: Korean blogosphere is almost overloaded with warning messages telling readers: "Do NOT update libcairo2!" The majority of Korean users use Gulim.ttc and Batang.ttc, since using ones supplied with Ubuntu (Baekmuk) isn't so great with anti-aliasing. This update rendered, probably thousands of users' computers unusable. Some linux-savvy users would have figured it out that it was the font problem by checking logs etc, but new users just can't do anything about it, and is left with absolutely no applications running (all of them that use cairo is crashing with floating point exception whenever applicable font is used in application) This "looks" like Firefox is the problem, but you have to realize that many Asian users use English version of OS, and only time they encounter their language is in a web browser, so that's why so many bugs are filed about Firefox crashing. -- [CVE-2007-5503 security fix regression] firefox crashes after upgrading to libcairo2 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173861 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for libcairo in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

(For those who don't know, it's the clock application for Xubuntu, and I changed the font of time display) After updating, xfce-panel just did not start on bootup, so for an end-user, the computer is completely broken. (nothing can be done in X) I had to delete my ~/.config, and took me a while to figure out why this happened. So, from what I tried, artwiz fonts Gulim.ttc, Batang.ttc (Korean fonts) cause this problem, but there were absolutely no problems before doing an update.
[Bug 174999] Gnome main menu can't be activated when clicking at the top of the screen
Public bug reported: This problem appears only when "desktop effects" is enabled - with out it the menu access is OK: The problem is that for good usability you want the main menu to be very accessible. In Ubuntu's GNOME this requirement is met by positioning the menu on the top left corner of the screen making the target size to hit it infinite in size (see Fits Law). The problem is that with "desktop effects" enabled if the cursor is thrown to the top left corner then it can't activate the menu - although it looks like it should, clicking the first 2 top most pixels of the screen does not trigger the menu (or any other launcher for that matter - it might not actually hit the panel). The result is very poor usability - a-la MS-Windows 95 through 2000 where the start button was a few pixels off from the bottom left corner - making it difficult to hit as you have to either carefully approach the menu in order to click it or throw the mouse to the top of the screen and then bring it back just a bit. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gnome main menu can't be activated when clicking at the top of the screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174999 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 24280] Re: applications run through gksu cannot use themes in ~/.themes
How about this for a solution: Situation: The user changes her theme to a non-standard one installed by downloading an archive file and installing it with GNOME's appearance properties application. Problem: Applications launched by the user via. a "sudo" or "gksu" command do not reflect the user's theme. Explanation: The root user may not have had the user's theme selected, had their own theme selected by an administrator using the root account graphically (which as far as I know is not a good idea), or had the user's theme selected but cannot find it because it is not in their .themes directory. Solution: Allow gksu to change environment in such a way that the program launched by gksu has the user's theme. Whether this is by changing environment variables to flag the GTK program, pointing the program to a different gconf configuration, or something else (hopefully decided by someone with a much deeper knowledge of GNOME and GTK than myself), it should not change GTK or GNOME properties for any other root-run program but the one launched by gksu. Rationale: Modifying sudo to fix a minor gtk appearance bug seems like a very bad idea. However, gksu is gtk-based and as such should integrate as perfectly as possible into that environment. Also, this solution would allow the use cases where the root account is using that account graphically in GNOME/GTK to act correctly (i.e. run using the root's theme rather than the user's theme), if implemented correctly. [Bug 156643] Re: Internal and external links diplay and print problem
Adding the pdfborderstyle={/S/U/W 0} to the hyperref package when producing a pdf suppresses all visual clues as to the existence of hyperlinks in the document. A strange idea to me : you create a pdf with hyperlinks yet there is nothing that tells the user that some part of the text is a link until, by chance, his cursor changes when passing over the link. Anyway, let's not confuse the method of creation of the pdf with the display and print of the document. Evince and kpdf do the latter and usually the user (I mean the person reading the doc) has no control on how it was produced. When Michael above says that these boxes were probably present in the documents in the past, he is right. For as long as I've used latex, I have made documents with those red boxes around links. And for years now I was able to see them in kpdf, xpdf and acroread (I don't use evince much to remember how it was then) when displaying the document but somehow they were ignored when printing. Now with latest versions of evince and kpdf (but not xpdf nor acroread), those red boxes are also printed and that is both ugly and useless. Thank you Michael for your suggestion but I really want the best of both worlds : pdf with hyperlinks clearly visible on screen but invisible on paper. That's what we had in the past. Now why has this changed ? Is this a bug or a feature ? When someone creates a pdf and puts those red boxes around links, does he intend to have them on screen only or on paper as well ? What shoud the reader do ? I for one wish this behaviour could be set as an option in the reader. If it can't, I'd rather go back to the former behaviour. -- Internal and external links diplay and print problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156643 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 152917] Re: evolution appointment timezone issues
Yes, that's still a problem in gutsy. I just tried. I've also discovered that the timezone configuration isn't displayed even though it's checked in the view menu. This time, I did the following: 1) opened evolution and selected calendar view. 2) double-clicked on the top field in my day-view to create an all-day event. 3) that dialog doesn't show the timezone setting. In the View-menu, it's selected. 4) I unselected and selected the timezone setting in the view-menu. Now it's visible again. 5) I selected a time-zone from the world map. 6) wrote a short summary 7) saved. 8) double-clicked the new event. The time-zone setting is not visible, even though it's checked in the view-menu. 9) unselected and reselected the timezone setting in the view menu and had a look at it. Hi Jorge could you please install the -dbgsym packages, mentioned in the link from comment #5, before trying to obtain a backtrace, without debugging symbols there's no much useful information in the backtrace. [Bug 174887] After installing gtkam there was no start up menu left
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel I wanted to install a photo management package and used Synaptic to install Gtkam and, although some of the packages necessary weren't authenticated, went ahead with the install. The main program selection menu disappeared from the Mint 3.0 Cassandra edition. I started Synaptic for the command line and un-installed gtkam and all the dependencies I could find from the synaptic history. [Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 128803 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/128803 You use system>admin>network. That way your interface is configured without network manager and it is fast. The only problem is for laptop users like me who need to switch between networks very often, network- manager is VERY much better at that. By the way you should comment on the main bug, not in the duplicate? To remove network manager, just find it in synaptic and remove it. You have to know how to configure your network with the other user interface afterwards however, so I suggest you practice with that first. -- [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151544 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for meta-gnome2 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup
Oh yeah and I forgot to mention that of course all these tests were done ~empirically (cold boot, one thing changed at a time). The second "34 seconds!" time is, of course, not significative compared to "no network interace configured". Furthermore, removing compiz + awn reduces the login time by 5 additional seconds (much less than I thought; I thought it would chop off 15 seconds). -- [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/128803 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 52840] Re: Searching "File System" returns immediately with no results
Same issue for me in 2.20.0 under Ubuntu 7.10. It can only find the file IF I happened to be AT the file folder in which the file is contained. For example, it cannot find a file on the desktop when the home folder is selected for search. It can only find the file when I set the start point to be the Desktop folder. -- Searching "File System" returns immediately with no results https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/52840 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
