[Bug 132612] Re: memory leak in evince?

2007-12-18 Thread kripkenstein
Ok, perhaps some progress on this matter.

This bothered me enough to try to get something done, so I talked to one
of the Evince devs. Turns out part of the problem is that Evince always
caches 2 pages forward and back. So even if you are viewing a single
page, you have 5 pages rendered in memory. When pages are very 'heavy'
this becomes a problem.

I have therefore written a patch to change the caching algorithm in
Evince, in order to make it adaptive. The new method will cache pages
ahead and back in a semi-smart manner, depending on the amount of free
memory. If there is none, then it will only render pages currently in
sight.

I sent the patch to the Evince dev; we'll see what they think. Meanwhile
I am attaching it here as well, if someone wants to look at it, test it,
etc. To do so, install Evince from svn (as explained here:
http://live.gnome.org/Evince/GettingEvince ). Then apply the patch to
the single file I modified (in the directory 'shell'). Then 'make
install', etc.

On my 512MB system, I can now view PDFs that used to kill the computer
(Evince still takes 100-200 MB, though). Results from other computers
and files would be helpful, since the caching method I implemented has a
heuristic for how to decide how many pages to cache, and I don't know if
it is optimal in all cases. Details are inside the patch, in code
comments, but basically it reads /proc/meminfo, calculates free memory,
considers cached RAM and also used swap in order to decide how much
should really be usable.

Comments, etc., are welcome.

(Note that this is far from solving all of Evince's memory issues. It still
takes much more RAM than xPDF does, even page-for-page. But hopefully a step in
the right direction.)

touch any other modules (in this case the epiphany history handler).

2007-12-18 Thread Stephen Drake
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 50386 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/50386

It's subtly different because the key entered is used with the essid to
create a hex key and then written to the interfaces file. The WEP key is
just written straight to the file.

Why this wasn't fixed when WPA support was added I've no idea.

RE: [Bug 163325] Re: File browser doesn't response when I press a key

2007-12-18 Thread wang

Hi,
This happens because SCIM is not configed correctly.I has found a solution to
fix it.
a. Open a console window,type command im-switch -s none
It means that no input method is used.
b. Log out and then log in.
Now the iput method won't run automatically.
c.Edit this file:~/.scim/config
Change /FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic false to /FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic true
If we skip Step(a)(b),the change here dosen't work.
d. console windows,type im-switch -s scim

Best wishes~

I press a key I just installed Gutsy. As I started to play around with
it, I noticed, that pressing shift key would freeze the keyboard input in
File Browser, in the middle of renaming the folder. As this happens, I can
still rename directories through the terminal, and the change would be
reflected in the File Browser, next time I open it. Sometimes the
freeze is permanent throughout the session, I think, and sometimes it
works again if you just open a new window. Either way, though, I have no
way of inputting upper case characters in File Browser. Is this a bug I
should report? I want to check with you all to make sure that I am not doing
something silly, before I report it. I am using Dell Inspiron 530s, and
the mouse and keyboard that came with it, I think, connected through KVM
from Belkin. It was working just fine with Kubuntu 7.10, until I wiped it
out and installed Ubuntu just now. I do have the SCIM for Japanese input,
also. However, this happens in English keyboard mode. -- File browser

[Bug 177186] Evolution: Unable to open mail boxes

Public bug reported:

[Bug 177186] Re: Evolution: Unable to open mail boxes

2007-12-18 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-12-18 Thread pepito
EDIT TO MY POST:

I was wrong:

gnome was not 15 secs, but 35 secs as many of you.
I updated the config, removed an env variable that was dodgy and also edited
/usr/bin/compiz-start and removed in it the gconf option as it was telling me
this was already set up.
Then I added to my gnome session this /usr/bin/compiz-start and removed all
other emerald/ compiz things from the Session menu.
Logged out
Login in 2 secs!

So the problem is in gconf I dare say... try to have a look
it seems that it is loaded twice?

Another thing I can t sort out:
a ps -ux tells me i m running the gtk-window-decorator --replace
i don t want this one to be used, but my emerald theme.

From a terminal, if i type emerald --replace, everything is just fine,
perfect, as I want it to be.
But I can t add this in the Session Menu: it just not works, as if it were not
there.
Any idea?

Many thanks! Hope I have helped somehow!

/usr/bin/compiz-start? That file doesn't exist for me. I'm not using gconf
bindings for my compiz either--I'm using ccsm's settings, so my compiz line
in ps -aef is
compiz.real --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
--indirect-rendering

[Bug 177192] Must select printer in PageSetup before printing

2007-12-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: foo2zjs

To achieve a good printing with Eye of Gnome, I must pre-select the
printer in Page Setup dialog before printing the image. If I don't
select it or let it at Any Printer and then print, I see the job in
Document print status dialog but the printer don't receive any data.

I get the same problem with Evince.

My printer is a HP LaserJet 1020, so I use the driver foo2zjs.

I'm running Gusty Gibbon.

[Bug 177192] Re: Must select printer in PageSetup before printing

2007-12-18 Thread Till Kamppeter
This has nothing to do with the printer driver, it is a big usability
problem of Eye of GNOME and Evince. The driver provides info about all
printer properties including paper and CUPS moves this info correctly on
to the client. Most clients applications present this info correctly in
one printing dialog, like OpenOffice.org and all KDE applications. It is
a bad design of eog that you have to select the printer in Printer
Setup and Print and that the paper size is only selectable in
Printer Setup and not in print.

Moving to appropriate packages.

[Bug 86431] Re: nautilus-cd-burner wrongly reports burn failure

2007-12-18 Thread Christian Niemeyer
I guess this is not a problem of nautilus-cd-burner but the error is in hal
(libhal1 or hal1).
Check if you can select in the nautilus-burn dialog an appropiate speed. For me
it isn't possible since Gutsy, only weird speed selections beginning with 9x.
Therefore the error gets produced.

2007-12-18 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 27014] Re: evolution bug, Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2007-12-18 Thread przemek klosowski
Deleting the *.ev-summary files didn't resolve the problem for me---in
fact before it would just throw up the error message every time it tried
to fetch new mail, and after deleting the files it would crash
immediately after opening the main window (possibly when it went out to
the server to get new mail).

I then tried to run it under strace:
 strace -f evolution
and it started w/o crashing. Perhaps strace with its syscall printouts slows it
down enough to avoid the race that trips it up in the first place. So, I have
found a hacked workaround, of sorts.

[Bug 153426] Re: GDM Greeter Malfunction in Gutsy RC

2007-12-18 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 159567] The default composited volume widget is too large

2007-12-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: beryl

(Using Ubuntu Gutsy)

The widget that pops up when you press the volume keys on a multimedia
keyboard seems to be excesively large, at least in a 1024x768 display. I
think it should be resized by at least half its actual size.

Note that this happens with the Normal effects switched on, with the
defualt settings.

I will attach a screenshot in a comment.
