[Bug 192316] [NEW] Application launchers show incorrect icon when dragged and dropped from Add to Panel

2008-02-16 Thread Ryan Steele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When I drag and drop an item from the Application Launcher section of
the Add to Panel window, instead of showing the application's icon on
the new launcher, it shows a yellow diamond with a question mark on it.
When I hover my mouse over it, it shows (using the example of
Calculator):

(null)
Open '/usr/share/applications/gcalctool.desktop'

When you add the launcher using the Add button in the Add to Panel
window, the launcher is added correctly.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Right-click an empty space in the panel and select Add to Panel...
2. Click Application Launcher
3. Drag an application to the panel

Expected result: The application button displays in the panel with the
application's icon, and the name of the application in the tooltip

Actual result: A yellow diamond with a question mark in it is displayed
in the panel, and the tooltip displays (null)

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2008-02-16 Thread Sam Liddicott
Until totem-gstreamer has menus working, can we please NOT have it set
as the default, but use totem-xine instead.

I'm using Hardy and my children keep getting frustrated because totem-gstreamer
keeps getting installed with updates.
It's a load of crock and stops them watching their DVD's, please don't make
half-baked packages the default when there is another alternative that has
worked for years.

Gstreamer is where the community is going, Xine-lib is not. Yes, it's
frustrating that DVD menus don't work on totem-gstreamer, but I would
suggest you keep that package, and use VLC to watch your DVDs, not
Totem.

[Bug 192358] [NEW] Tooltips are not a user manual

2008-02-16 Thread Emmanuel Pacaud
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Using gnome-panel from ubuntu hardy (2.21.91), the workspace switcher has big
tooltips explaining its use.

I don't think it's a good idea:

- tooltips should stay small, these ones are big.
- they should not be a substitute to the user manual.
- the one for the first workspace area hides almost completely the workspace
switcher.
- icons are distracting.

[Bug 111896] Re: menu editor massively defective

2008-02-16 Thread Jared Moore
I wouldn't say that it's massively deficient, but it does have several
serious bugs. Could you be more specific, e.g.

1) Which operations do you think are slow?
2) Would you be able to describe any more specific test cases? Several problems
are already known.
3) How could it be easier to use? What extra features could it have?
4) Yes, you did :)

I'm not sure that integration with Add/Remove programs is such a good
idea. Add/Remove programs is a user-friendly package manager, while
Alacarte is a main menu editor... although they are vaguely related, I
can't imagine a good way to put them together. After all, Unix is all
about small specific programs doing one thing well :)

[Bug 192358] Re: Tooltips are not a user manual

2008-02-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report. We have been discussing that this week.
The intend is to make easier for users to discover those feature, the
tooltip is not optimal and we have been discussing this. Do you have
suggestions about a better way to show them? User testing shows most
people don't read the user guide. We are considering using the context
menu to list those actions, what do you think about that?

[Bug 192307] Re: japanese encoding is not displayed properly

2008-02-16 Thread punong_bisyonaryo
I am using Feisty Fawn. I had removed most of the contents due to its
proprietary nature. The file seems to have been saved with Western (ISO
8859-15) encoding, though I am not sure. In any case, I still maintain
that this is a bug, since when I open it with any program in my office
(not Linux) it opens just fine, proper character display and all.

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the
live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy

on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out

[Bug 118988] Re: No way to disable trash in nautilus

2008-02-16 Thread Arthur Archnix
It's a shame this is listed as 'wishlist'. It's more than a matter of
'preference' when it comes to removable media. New users are often
confused why they can't add files to their removable devices even though
it shows enough free space. The reason is because nautilus creates a
hidden trash folder on their devices and users need to figure out that
it's there (if they're coming from Windows, (Mac, KDE?) they wouldn't
because that's not the standard behaviour. As it stands, I know have to
remember to always right-click and delete completely, but sometimes I
find that others have simply deleted files off my memory stick and I
have to empty the trash to free up the memory.

[Bug 192378] [NEW] [hardy] Copy/Paste don't keep execute rights on files

2008-02-16 Thread Julien Lavergne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When you do a copy / paste operation with nautilus on a execute file,
the copy of the file doesn't have the execute rights anymore.

To reproduce :
- Do a apt-get source for a package
- Copy debian/rules to another folder.
- See that debian/rules have no longer execute right (I need to do a chmod +x
debian/rules to rebuild the package).

Simple cp command work.

[Bug 192358] Re: Tooltips are not a user manual

2008-02-16 Thread Emmanuel Pacaud
« The intend is to make easier for users to discover those feature, the
tooltip is not optimal and we have been discussing this. »

My take on this one would be:

- people that interract with the desktop mostly using the mouse will discover
the mouse features by themselves.
- I think people that want to use keyboard shortcuts have been used to search
them. And the shortcuts can be found either by reading the user manual which is
available directly using the popup menu, or by using the keyboard shortcut
dialog in system-preferences.

So I don't think we really need to add yet another way to discover the
features. But that's only my opinion, not the result of a usability
study :)

« We are considering using the context menu to list those actions, what
do you think about that? »

That would be better, yes. And a way to show the shortcuts that is
consistent the the regular application menus.

Also, Network manager gnome applet is simply hung. The network manager spinner
started to spin and then it got stuck.
Also, i am sure my router is fine and its running, because other connections

I must reboot my machine.

Also, I notice that whenever this happens, I am unable to start any new
applications ( with few exceptions ).

Starting nautilus simply does nothing. When started from gnome-terminal again,
nothing happens. Command just waits there,
no nautilus window comes up. When starting with strace, i found that nautilus

That's not really true, compiz has feature expo, scale and zoom
features which can't be triggered using the mouse using the default
configuration for example

Ok, so the correct sentence is:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't
include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report
 bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd
be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the
 problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
 http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
 At a minimum, we need:
 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
 problem,
 2. the behavior you expected, and
 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
 Thanks!

[Bug 179252] Re: restricted plugins message shows a button, the link for which is incorrect

2008-02-16 Thread Iulian Udrea
Thanks for the information. You reported this bug a while ago and there
hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still
an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release?

Thank you

[Bug 111896] Re: menu editor massively defective

2008-02-16 Thread Ryan Vickers
Thanks for responding - I know this is kinda old now, but it's still
true in 7.10.

As for being extremely slow, the more programs you install, the more
entries there are, and this seem to slow it down, a lot. could this be
fixed some how? Furthermore, after adding a couple custom entries to the
menu, say, 3, 4, 6, or more, just clicking the menu button on the panel
for the first time after every logon takes a long time to load. Ah,
Why??? I'm just kind of worked up a bout this because it's just such a
fast efficient high-class operating system, you would not expect there to
be major flaws like this menus in it still!

As for the moving of items, once you figure it out, it's not so bad, but
it's still slow to do this, and it often will /still/ not work, or
duplicate the launchers, etc.

As for the new window appearing /under/ the main window, why are we doing this
now? Just to confuse people? I mean, I can find it because I actually check
the window list but a lot of people will expect it to just open and show up,
including me...
It doesn't seem to always do this, but most of the time... Now that I think
about it, I think it's the desktop effects that cause it for some reason -
another bug.

As for #3, fixing all these problems would make it easier to use, an
could it possibly be a little better integrated with Add/Remove, and
really, just make it more snappy and responsive, and that would be such
a big deal!!

[Bug 62430] Re: rhythmbox doesn't do anything with .pls given on the command line

2008-02-16 Thread Ulf Abrahamsson
1. Rhythmbox does not really do anything with a local .pls file.
2. Opening the the .pls file in Totem opens and plays the file.

Possible solutions:
A. Add local .pls file support in Rhythmbox (requires a patch that adds
functionality)
B. Associate the .pls file with Totem by default. (simple and logical, a good
work around until Rhythmbox works as intended)
C. Make firefox pass the URLs to the mozilla-totem plugin.

Go with option B.

[Bug 62502] Re: [Edgy] Volume names appears untranslated

2008-02-16 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
The problem has been reintroduced in Hardy, but now there are more
untranslated strings:

Computer - Equipo
Filesystem - Sistema de archivos
%s Media - Soporte %s
... and all of the original bugreport.

All this strings are translated into Spanish for Hardy in Launchpad:

I attach an screenshot to illustrate the problem.

[Bug 192347] Re: cannot launch alacarte

2008-02-16 Thread Travis Watkins
You've somehow managed to corrupt your system. There is no way alacarte
can be installed without the python-gnome2 package (which provides
gnomevfs) being installed so you must have deleted some files in /usr.
