[Bug 67476] Re: Dialogs of background applications pop up in the foreground

2008-04-02 Thread Octavio Alvarez
Any news on this issue? It gets very annoying (and dangerous),
particularly when typing passwords.

Load Pidgin, Evolution and other applications at the same time, each of
which ask for a password. Try typing the corresponding password for each
prompt as soon as you see it (without cursing during the process).

I also found this link: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/400/ People
who comment there think this behavior is not only annoying but a
security risk also.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with Gnome 2.22.0, and Compiz enabled.

When using Terminal, after switching to fullscreen (F11), and then back

[Bug 211148] [NEW] Panel Icons cannot be locked to their set position

2008-04-02 Thread Mark Preston
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have 7 panel icons on the lower panel. I think that the Sensors Applet
may be the problem. The icons on (or in) the panel always locked with
the Workplace Switcher rightmost. Now, every time I start gutsy, the
icons are in crazy order and never the same twice in a row.

Description:Ubuntu 7.10

apt-cache policy sensorsapplets returns an (W) error and no information.

I expected the icons to be locked when the "lock to panel" is selected.

[Bug 211146] [NEW] Brighness level adjustment weird behavior

2008-04-02 Thread Zorglub
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

On my Toshiba Satellite U-300, Fn keys and Gnome power management tools
(including Gnome-Panel's brigthness applet) seem to work independently.

I can adjust the brigthness using the FN keys, and it won't affect the
applet slider, for example...

Sometime, in the middle of a session, they seem to synchonize randomly,
affecting the screen brightness.

Also, the setting in gnome-power-management (using gconf-editor) don't
apply correctly.

[Bug 199960] Re: error starting GNOME Settings Daemon

2008-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
I've been looking into all of the fglrx issues today. Many I suspect
are due to AIGLX, but I'm awaiting confirmation of that. Applying help
towards confirming and providing extra info on any of those bugs (which
are in linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24) would help in moving things
forward. Identifying issues that are dupes of other reported issues
would be extremely helpful.

Timo is uploading a new -fglrx driver today (8.4 iirc), which I'd
encourage you all to test once it becomes available. Identifying issues
that have been resolved with this upload would be very helpful at
narrowing down the number of bugs that need investigated.

I am in regular contact with the ATI engineering team at AMD, and am
bringing some of these bug reports to their attention. So, the higher
quality that the -fglrx bug reports can be made, the more likely we can
expect AMD to look at and help in resolving them.

[Bug 211113] [NEW] Workspace Switcher Tooltip gets hidden behind screen

2008-04-02 Thread Oleg
Public bug reported:

I have upgraded to Ubuntu Hardy from Gutsy, with all updates installed,
and libwnck22 version 2.22.0-0ubuntu3.

After bug 204994 was fixed, I have noticed this problem.

To reproduce:
1.) Make sure the workspace switcher applet is in the right end of the screen.
If it has 4 desktops, make sure the very first one contains a window that you
can move using this switcher.
2.) Hover your mouse over the very right desktop to reveal a tooltip that
behaves normally.
3.) Without taking the mouse off the switcher (So the tooltip never
hides/moves), move your mouse towards the left.
4.) Now say in the very left Desktop you have a window called "Report a bug
about Ubuntu". When you move your mouse over that thumbnail of the window, you
should see that the tooltip "Click here to start dragging "Report a bug about
Ubuntu"" hides behind the screen. This shouldn't happen, and the tooltip should
resize to the left instead of to the right.

Also, I'm not sure if this is a problem, but while hovering your mouse
over something, like the switcher, and moving the mouse over the
tooltip, the tooltip dissapears and reappears somewhere else. In other
words, it tries to escape being "under" the mouse.

[Bug 44728] Re: Gaim doesn't include SILC support

2008-04-02 Thread agent 8131
*sigh*

This is still broken in Hardy beta. Come on, this is a 1 minute fix,
why should this bug report be 2 years old and still not fixed? Anyway,
nothing left to say except what has already been said:

The only thing required to fix this bug is to add the libsilc dev
package to the build-deps and libsilc to the package dependencies.
That's all that's been needed for at least the last couple of releases
(edgy, feisty, gutsy, *hardy*). It's such a simple solution and would
make the lives of all of us using silc so much easier that I would
really like to see it happen before the next release. I'd also like to
note that the pidgin and finch packages (in gutsy) both claim to have
silc support when, in fact, they do not.

[Bug 211112] [NEW] Show Desktop applet tooltip flickering too much

2008-04-02 Thread Oleg
Public bug reported:

Right, I had Ubuntu 7.10 but upgraded to Hardy with all updates
installed, and libwnck v. 2.22.0-0ubuntu3.

This is kind of related to bug
204994(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libwnck/+bug/204994)

The flickering tooltip persists on the show desjtop button in the gnome
panel.

To reproduce this problem, hover your mouse over the Show/Hide Desktop
button at the bottom left part of the screen (the default location), and
move your mouse to see the tooltip flickering.

Personally, I like this style of tooltip, with the image, description,
and shortcut, but if these "new" tooltips have not been perfected, I
think it is better to use the original plain ones.

[Bug 39413] Re: ubuntu doesn't notice when running on battery

With ac plug:

 Thermal 2: ok, 27.0 degrees C

Without it, running on batteries:

acpi -V:

 Thermal 2: ok, 27.0 degrees C

Is this a kernel or gnome-power-manager fault?

GDM screen was not "shown" (after a few minutes). I went to tty1, and
tried top. I noticed gdmgreeter is using 99,9% of CPU time.

Workaroud:
- sudo killall gmd
- startx

I really need some help in order to give more usefull information to bug

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2008-04-02 Thread MountainX
Unfortunately I am getting a lot more experience with this bug. I think
the following points summarize the factors the combine to produce this
bug:

1. the network share must reside on a Windows file server (or maybe another
non-Unix-type file system).
2. the network file sharing protocol is cifs (and/or sshfs according to other
related bugs).
3. the Linux clients run gedit, Geany, Vim, Eclipse or any other Linux app that
attempts to move/rename an open file.

And in Ubuntu Hardy, smbfs also seems to cause the same problem that
cifs does.

I think the prior comments make it clear that the gedit devs don't plan
to fix this bug. Neither do the cifs devs. So anyone waiting for the
devs to get around to fixing it may have a long wait. (Also, if you read
the above comments you'll see that at least one patch has been submitted
but it isn't favored by the devs.)

[Bug 191475] Re: [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications

2008-04-02 Thread Daniel Hahler
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

Under system->preferences->file management, the "media" tab does not
detect a lot of the installed applications.

For instance, on a standard hardy alpha 4 install, both Music Player and
Photos are disabled, with the text "No applications installed", despite
Rhythmbox and F-spot being installed on the system.
Additionally, under the "other media" section, it's not possible to select
brasero to be the default for "blank cd disc".

This tab seems to duplicate most of the functionality from "Removable
Drives and Media", and the settings in it don't match up with what's set
in the removable drives and media app. I think it should probably be
hidden in the standard hardy install to prevent confusion.

I don't get the idea.

The bug was closed because I didn't answer on time. Then I added the
information requested (the same situation, just a new version). Today I
realized that if I added the information requested I should reopen the
bug according to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/deskbar-

Now I should open another bug for the same issue. It's a bit confusing.

[Bug 210561] Re: Time zone changes on every boot

2008-04-02 Thread Sareen Shah
OK, I've found some weird stuff w/ this problem.

So I log in, and see that the time-zone changes. I go ahead and change
it back to America/Chicago.

If I log out, and press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go to a console and type in
"date", it shows me CDT as it should (so the problem doesn't happen on
logging out, it's on logging in).

If I log out, and log back in to my same user name (note: I'm not
restarting the computer here), I see that the time zone is incorrect
again.

However, if I log out of my normal user name "sareen", and log into
another account that I created: "guest", the time zone remains as
America/Chicago as it should.

If I log out of my normal user name "sareen", and log back into
"sareen," then something a bit strange happens. If immediately upon
entering my password I press Ctrl-Alt-F1 and go to console, then wait
for a few seconds and press Ctrl-Alt-F7 when everything is loaded up in
X, then the time zone is America/Chicago as it should be!

So I think it's related to another problem I've been having which I
haven't reported yet because I was trying to figure it out a bit.
Everytime I log in, gnome-panel crashes with an error similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/200881

The title of that one is: [hardy] gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEV in
clock_map_place_locations at clock-map.c:432
The title of mine would've been (based on Apport): gnome-panel crashed with
SIGSEGV in clock_map_refresh()

The difference is that they go through the calendar/clock applet to
reproduce the crash, mine happens whenever I log in to "sareen" (but
never when I log into "guest")

Unfortunately I did not report it, and the dialog which kept asking me
to "Report the problem..." is not showing up anymore, even though gnome-
panel seems to still be crashing upon login (it appears, disappears,
then re-appears). I guess because I had hit "Report the problem..."
before but didn't continue on with it. If anyone knows how I can bring
that dialog back, I'll report the problem this time and link to that bug
report so you can see the automatically generated info.

Then again, I don't know if it still is crashing in the background when
I go to Ctrl-Alt-F1 immediately, so that may just be a red herring.

2008-04-02 Thread Sareen Shah
It only happens when I reboot, that's the only way I can reproduce the
behavior. Obviously that isn't much help for you, but I'm not sure what
other information I can give.

Result of "date" on startup:
Wed Apr 2 15:39:54 EDT 2008

Then I go to System > Administration > Time & Date > Unlock

Then I click on the Time Zone box and click on they city of Chicago (it
was set to Indiana/Vincennes). Configuration is set to "Manual" (as
opposed to "Keep Synchronized")

Result of "date" afterwards:
Wed Apr 2 14:42:45 CDT 2008

Also, sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata doesn't solve the problem

[Bug 210561] [NEW] Time zone changes on every boot

2008-04-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm using Hardy Heron Beta

Not sure when this started happening, but everytime I reboot my
computer, the time zone changes to a wrong one, and I have to change the
time zone manually.

My real time zone is America/Chicago. But on every reboot, it changes to
America/Indiana/Vincennes. I think Indiana has a weird system for time
zones, so some counties have one system and other counties have another,
but unfortunately this particular location places me an hour ahead of
what the time should be.

I also had another issue related w/ the system time at this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=738681 . But that was solved w/
a reboot. Just mentioning it in case there's some overlap.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Human List login hangs for over 5 minutes or more during loading. All
other login screens work quick and normally including Happy GNOME with
Browser. This happens during logout or when starting up.

Also Human List will not bring up any names in the list.

This is with a fully updated Hardy.

[Bug 210989] [NEW] Sound Juicer cut a sector when ripping a track

2008-04-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When ripping an audio cd with Sound Juicer, you get a track that is 2352
octets shorter than the track on the cd. 2352 octets is the size of 588
audio samples, so the conclusion is that the last sector of every track
is cut during the ripping. At the begining I was thinking that was the
fault of Sound Juicer, but I'm wondering if it's not the gstreamer's
fault because the folowing command cuts the track too :

gst-launch-0.10 cdparanoiasrc device=/dev/cdrom track=1 ! decodebin !
wavenc ! filesink location=track1.wav
