[Bug 201318] Re: acpi reporting incorrect battery state

As this problem doesn't appear when using other desktops like kde or

[Bug 201318] [NEW] acpi reporting incorrect battery state

2008-04-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.11

When testing the hardy alpha6 live cd I came across an bug that was also in the
Feisty release and it isn't resolved.
The problem is that when I start my laptop, plugged into AC, acpi and the
gnome-power-manager
think that AC is unplugged and report a popup telling the laptop is unplugged.
(Which isn't)

The bug can be reproduced by unplugging the AC and replugging it
again, then after
one minute acpi+g-p-m thinks the battery is unplugged again.

Here's the what acpi reported:
(laptop on AC system up and running, g-p-m gives the unplugged warning)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V
 Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 02:06:43 remaining
 Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C
  AC Adapter 1: off-line

(laptop after unplugging AC)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V
 Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 04:25:27 remaining
 Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C
  AC Adapter 1: off-line

( and replugging it again)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V
 Battery 1: charging, 98%, 00:33:00 until charged
 Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C
  AC Adapter 1: on-line

Then after one +- one minute g-p-m gave an popup telling the laptop
was disconnected.(Which wasn't the case)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V
 Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 18:23:56 remaining
 Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C
  AC Adapter 1: on-line

The remaining outputs shows that the battery is charging as the remaining times
increases.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V
 Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 25:42:22 remaining
 Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C
  AC Adapter 1: on-line

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V
 Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 27:48:38 remaining
 Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C
  AC Adapter 1: on-line

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V
 Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 31:56:44 remaining
 Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C
  AC Adapter 1: on-line

I can't find anything useful in the logs but if you need more info I'm
happy to provide it.

[Bug 219468] [NEW] [Hardy] Synaptics touchpad disabled by default after upgrade

2008-04-18 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running Gutsy, but with some packages
installed from Hardy, including the Kernel/X/Compiz/NVIDIA packages.
This bug might be a symptom of that configuration, but I'm filing it
just in case, because if it's not then it's super high-priority ...

A few days ago I upgraded gnome-control-center to the latest Hardy
version and my touchpad stopped working. It would work in the GDM
greeter, but after logging in it was completely non-functional. After a
bunch of troubleshooting, I eventually figured out that the problem was
that it was literally being disabled after login; i.e., "synclient -l"
showed that TouchpadOff was 1. Eventually I figured out that Gnome had
added an option to disable the touchpad (in bug 184913) and that it was
on! (i.e., disabled.) After checking "Enabled" in System -> Preferences
-> Mouse -> Touchpad there is no longer any problem, but this suggests
that other people who upgrade will lose their touchpads too. The default
should definitely be for it to be enabled.

Ok. Done and done after my last batch of photos.

[Bug 219460] [NEW] "Mail Preferences" part of Evolution preferences uses wrong font color

2008-04-18 Thread Mackenzie Morgan
Public bug reported:

I'm using GNOME 2.22

I customized my panel's font color a few days ago. Today, when I looked
in Evolution's preferences, all of the headings and some of the text in

[Bug 206439] Re: smb password protected share cannot be accessed

2008-04-18 Thread SteveGotthardt
I have the same problem with hardy. I can no longer create folders, copy docs,
etc to smb shares.
When I run smbstatus on the server, I do not show up:
Samba version 3.0.26a
PID Username Group Machine
---

I used to show up with my username and group and had no problem using
shares.

In nautilus I would do a: smb://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/share and then I would have
permission to access shares.
There is nothing in the logs - I will turn up the verbosity and try again.

BTW - I can code in 'C' very well - Point me in the right direction and
I will take a look.

[Bug 127944] Re: [gutsy] nspluginviewer hogs the CPU

2008-04-18 Thread H Koch
I have 4 users (family) on my home machine - the other 3 use kde.
Almost every day the machine (3GHz core 2 duo) comes to a crawl
when 2 or more nspluginviewer processes
(presumably started by konqueror) use up all cpu time.

Similar problems have been reported by many since July 2007.
The solution seems to be known since August 2007
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=294385
Now the discussion seems to have ended ...

I am certainly happy that the solution is known,
but I would be nice if it also got implemented (in gutsy).
It does not help just to hear that bug X is a duplicate of bug Y.

I have been killing nspluginviewer processes for months now,
but I am not always around when this is necessary,
and my family is getting frustrated.
(To be honest, even more frustration comes from another bug,
presumably in the nvidia driver used in gutsy,
where the screen just goes black, periodically, for several minutes.)

What am I supposed to do?
Until 5 Months ago, on the previous machine, I used Debian unstable
(for several years, after many years of using Slackware).
I never had to suffer that long from any bug
before a package became available that fixed it.

If the answer is to wait each time for a new release of Ubuntu,
then I would switch back to Debian.
Another answer may be to finally get rid of kde.
(Most problems that I have encountered lately
are due to bad behavior of kde in multi-user environments.)

I am open to good suggestions.

[Bug 25931] Re: Failed to initalize HAL.

2008-04-18 Thread Bruce R
In Report #216159 I reported that that Kardy kernels -15 and -16 caused
problems for my E2160 with its Zarlink MT352 DBV-T (Aver A777) PCI card
identified as the likely cause, the card being happier with -12 and
perfectly happy with 7.10's kernel.

Now, Release Candidate 8.04 won't even install or run a LiveCD session
on my E2160/Zarlink rig, let alone raise a HAL initialization failure.

So, in view of Ripps818 comment, I will next try Release Candidate
installation on my 3.0GHz Nothwood rig, with and without its USB2
DibCom tuner attached before trying it out on a 'work in progress' E4600
rig which has NO tuner module (yet) and then report back.

(But first I'll add a comment to Bug Report #217726.)

[Bug 218015] Re: rhythmbox switches to default pulseaudio output on track change

2008-04-18 Thread Eythian
You are correct in how it works, however I see it as a bug because it
doesn't make any sense from a usability point of view. If you tell the
system that rb should be outputting to (say) your external sound card,
or another computer, you don't want it to revert when the track changes.
That means that every 4 or 5 minutes you're going to have to change the
settings again.

Even with the crossfader plugin turned on, when you pause it closes the
stream and so goes back to default on resume, which is still annoying.

The ideal solution would be for RB to behave like it did until about a
week ago, where it held the stream open even when not playing, so that
it always came out the same device. Maybe there is a feature in
pulseaudio to allow this to happen in some other way?

2008-04-18 Thread Jerry Schaefer
Hi,

Thanks for the info you sent. But as it doesn't actually correct
whatever is wrong with the Molecule screensaver module, I
would not call it a "fix", but only a workaround. My own "fix"
is to make darn sure I never select that module from the list.

Apparently the problem was not widespread, but specific to
only a few (although quite common) video cards, so it didn't
negatively impact a large enough user base to warrant devoting
a large-scale effort to diagnose and treat it, and that's fine.

[Bug 219428] [NEW] [hardy] Bug-Buddy Doesn't Launch From Applications Menu

2008-04-18 Thread Derek Morton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bug-buddy

Running Ubuntu 8.04
Bug-Buddy version: 2.22.0+dfsg-2

I believe in previous versions of Ubuntu (memory is slightly foggy on
this, but I believe I've done it before), going to the Bug Report Tool
in Applications --> Programming, opened a dialog that allowed a user to
fill out the necessary information and submit a bug report to Launchpad.

Now, when attempting to launch the Bug Report Tool from the Programming
menu, it errors "Either --appname or --package arguments are required."

This application makes it easy for casual end-users to submit bugs and
suggestions, a majority of which would not do so if the application is
not available. By wishing to target the casual user, we must also make
tools that are easy to use, not something complex so that it discourages
the casual user, like Launchpad might do.

[Bug 219419] [NEW] Busy CPU and very, very slow behavior -- O(3) or O(n) -- when deleting many files on a many files directory

2008-04-18 Thread zertyz
Public bug reported:

I'm posting the same bug as in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/47842 since it
still persists on Ubuntu Feisty with all updates.

As the author has very correctly described, this bug comes into scene
when deleting files on a directory with many files -- or -- when
deleting many files, period.

Those files were images on a local drive, I had preview turned on and I
selected a lot but not all files in the directory.

CPU was busy and deletions occured at a rate of 1 each 6 seconds (on a 1450
file count directory).
After some 500 items got deleted the average deletion time went down a little
bit to 3 or 4 seconds.

It was impossible to measure the correct O(n) since the times where not
continuous -- I mean, some times it deleted 10 entries in a second, some
other times a single entry took more than 10 seconds to delete.

I thought of some kind of mutex problems leading to temporary dead
locks, but since the CPU stayed at maximum all time I guess it may be
something else -- or simply a busy mutex waiting.

After 500 or so left entries, deletion happened like a flash until only
my 181 unselected files where there.

Thanks.

[Bug 190124] Re: Couldn't display "obex://fa:ce:fe:ed:be:ef]".

2008-04-18 Thread Saïvann Carignan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 186973 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/186973

Rene Horn : your bluetooth mouse can be configured inside the
preferences of the bluez-gnome applet, with few easy steps. However, the
error that you get while accessing your mouse via OBEX is normal since
your mouse does not support OBEX and does not contains any files, but it
could be interesting that non-OBEX devices does not show in "browse
devices" since they are not compatible. This request already exist, it
is bug 214750.

[Bug 218015] Re: rhythmbox switches to default pulseaudio output on track change

2008-04-18 Thread Mike Rooney
Thanks Eythian, I see what you mean, but you will have to convince me
this is a bug. You are routing an individual stream to a new location,
so when Rhythmbox opens a new stream for the next song (when not in
crossfade mode), the old routing isn't going to apply. That makes sense
to me.

If you want to permanently route Rhythmbox to a new destination, I feel
like there is a more proper way, though unfortunately I don't know it!

Please let me know what you think and correct me if I am wrong in
regards to anything I have said.

[Bug 219385] [NEW] File filters can make file selection dialog too wide for screen

2008-04-18 Thread mroth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-desktop-environment

This bug occurs in Firefox but is likely related to the generic Gnome
file-selection-dialog rather than application specific.

In this case our website is calling OS file dialog via Firefox and
JS/Flash, passing in a filter with a description (eg. "Photos and
Videos"), and file extension-matching pattern (eg.
"*.mov;*.mpg;*.avi;*.jpg")

Windows dialogs tend to truncate this list, and expand only the drop-
down when selected, open and active. Ubuntu/Gnome appears to make the
dialog width match the width of the filter drop-down, which is quite
long due to the number of file types and mixed-case scenarios (eg.
*.jpg;*.JPG)

Due to the amount of file formats we're filtering based on, the dialog
box can easily grow wider than the user's display permits.

See screenshot for illustration:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3215/2403694395_ca70740726.jpg

Expected behavior would be to truncate the file filter list display past
a certain point to prevent dialog box from growing too large.

Our testing confirms this behavior in both Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04RC.

This bug prevents Ubuntu users from being able to use the advanced
upload tool on Flickr.com from Firefox.

I had this issue on a fresh Hardy Heron RC installation, on both gnome-terminal

This system in question is a notebook.
I removed the symlink to 10-no-sub-pixel.conf, and added a symlink to

Now terminal fonts look better.
I hope we get a better fix for this issue than hacking base fontconfig layout.

Public bug reported:

Something like the following will be output on the console:

The errors continually display, and embedded JPX images (such as the
frontispiece of the above-linked book) do not display. The same results
are evident when I use pdfimages, implying that the problem is not with
evince, but with poppler.

GhostScript and Acroread both display the embedded images properly.

[Bug 219351] [NEW] evince does not correctly display embedded images in eps by inkscape

2008-04-18 Thread Akshay Dua
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

However, 'gv' does do it successfully but it takes a lot of time to load
all the images. The images were imported into inkscape from the open
clip art library. I then embedded all the images into the vector
graphics file. Next, I exported this as an eps file.

When I open the eps file in evince, it displays black lines and parts of
images. Only very few of them are correctly displayed.

Yes, disabling that plugin solved my freezes.

Is there a long-term solution to this issue? It seems awfully bad
behavior to have, even in a plugin, to freeze the entire UI. Should it
be disabled? Or, should we open up a bug against the plugin to get the
issue fixed properly?

[Bug 191475] Re: [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications

2008-04-18 Thread reassuringlyoffensive
Kivech,

VLC wouldn't autoplay with the current launch command even if it was added to
the list, so we just need to wait for a return of the ability to launch by
command string.

Please ignore the workaround I posted above, as the per-user method is a little
bit tricky compared with the following system-wide approach:

First of all, if you followed my other crappy method, open the Terminal and
delete that file in ~/.local/share/applications, as it's not needed with the
system-wide approach;

rm ~/.local/share/applications/vlc.desktop

Keep the Terminal open and copy and paste this command into it:
gksudo gedit /etc/gnome/defaults.list

Change the line "x-content/video-dvd=totem.desktop" to
"x-content/video-dvd=vlc.desktop". Close and save.

Note: You need to repeat the following steps each time VLC is updated.

Next, edit the following two files by pressing alt+f2, typing your password and
then by navigating to both /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop and
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/vlc.desktop. Right-click on them and select
"Properties" in the context menu, then replace the "exec=vlc %U" launch
command of both files to:

exec=vlc --vout-filter deinterlace --deinterlace-mode blend --volume 512 %m

Close and save both files. Finally, navigate to
Nautilus>Edit>Preferences>Media>DVD Video, select VLC and then reboot or
logout before you insert a DVD.

[Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2008-04-18 Thread Guilhem
Found this from : http://www.vergenet.net/~conrad/software/xsel/
cut --
Make the selection contents persist in memory

Normally the X selection only exists as long as the program it was
selected in is running. Further, some buggy applications tend to forget
their selection text after a little while. If you run:

xsel --keep

after selecting some important text, xsel will copy the text into its own
memory so you can paste it elsewhere even if the original program exits or
crashes.
-- cut
If a simple/old program can do this, couldn't this be integrated in gnome
window manager ??

Thanks

[Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2008-04-18 Thread Guilhem
I think there are case where it is very important to retain copy buffer : Have
you ever tried to create a filter with a header in evolution ?
A natural way would be :
- Show source message
- Select and copy desired header
- Close window
- Go to Edit > Filters > New >
- Paste
Unfortunately, it doesn't work, because of what has been said above... I have
to keep the window open, and once filter is created, go back to find it in
order to close it...

But I thought selection buffer (X-managed) was different from copy-paste
(WM managed)... but even CTRL-C doesn't retain clipboard...

It is my #1 wishlist/bugfix as I run into it very often... Worst, it
seems to me that even if selection buffer worked that way, copy-paste
used to behave as expected... maybe in my days of using windowmaker ?

Thanks for working so hard for us !

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 212013] Re: AltGr -- patch to be tested

Commenting out a part of the key handling in gtk-vnc/src/vncdisplay.c

[Bug 215196] Re: [gutsy] "Edit -> Current Profile -> Title and Command -> Run command as login shell" isn't honoured

2008-04-18 Thread Fjodor
Hey, thanks for the comment.

However, I found out late last night, that I had an error in
.bash_profile, attempting to source .bashrc twice. Why exactly that left
me with unset variables, I can't explain, but it works now.

Thus, I'll close the bug, or ask one of you guys to do it, if it turns
out I can't ;-)

Sorry for the inconvenience,

Sune

2008-04-18 Thread Fjodor
As said, I'm closing it. I guess it should be marked "invalid", since it
was a borked .bash_profile that caused it. I do wonder, however, if I
should file a bug for bash...

[Bug 215520] Re: Bookmarks cannot be reordered via D'n'D in Nautilus.

2008-04-18 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thanks for your report, that works fine for me, can you still reproduce
it with a new user created on your system? I've created like 20
bookmarks in order to reproduce this and it's works pretty fine, none of
them are sent to the bottom when finished the drop operation. thanks.

[Bug 219332] [NEW] using dialog "sent to" in folder documents

2008-04-18 Thread Patrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

There is a bug in nautilus 2.0.0 in combination with thunderbird!

Do the following:

1) Folder "documents" -> select several document files -> right-click -> select
"sent to"
2) select in the "sent to"-dialog "destination: thunderbird" -> "sent to": type
a file name as you like -> then compression: check "send compressed in" -> type
any file name for the compressed folder -> click on "sent"
3) thunderbird starts (thats ok) -> the window for writing an email opens ->
the given file name from the "sent to" dialogue is not handed over to
thunderbird. There ist still a blank field. The file name has to be typed in
once again.

I am using Ubuntu 7.10, system has been updated today.

[Bug 191475] Re: [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications

2008-04-18 Thread Marc Baas
As much as I appreciate reassuringlyoffensive's attempts to find a
proper workaround (you know me from the forums as "kivech"), doesn't it
make more sense to just add the VLC player to the list of possible DVD
players in Nautilus?

We are in RC already and this discussion has been going on for over a
month now. As much as I understand your pressure and how busy you guys
are (obviously at this stage of a release), it would save a lot of
people a lot of hassle if this could be put in before it becomes the
"official release".
