[Bug 201318] [NEW] acpi reporting incorrect battery state
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.11 When testing the hardy alpha6 live cd I came across an bug that was also in the Feisty release and it isn't resolved. The problem is that when I start my laptop, plugged into AC, acpi and the gnome-power-manager think that AC is unplugged and report a popup telling the laptop is unplugged. (Which isn't) The bug can be reproduced by unplugging the AC and replugging it again, then after one minute acpi+g-p-m thinks the battery is unplugged again. Here's the what acpi reported: (laptop on AC system up and running, g-p-m gives the unplugged warning) [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 02:06:43 remaining Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C AC Adapter 1: off-line (laptop after unplugging AC) [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 04:25:27 remaining Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C AC Adapter 1: off-line ( and replugging it again) [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V Battery 1: charging, 98%, 00:33:00 until charged Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C AC Adapter 1: on-line Then after one +- one minute g-p-m gave an popup telling the laptop was disconnected.(Which wasn't the case) [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi -V Battery 1: discharging, 98%, 18:23:56 remaining Thermal 1: ok, 53.0 degrees C AC Adapter 1: on-line The remaining outputs shows that the battery is charging as the remaining times increases. [Bug 219468] [NEW] [Hardy] Synaptics touchpad disabled by default after upgrade
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running Gutsy, but with some packages installed from Hardy, including the Kernel/X/Compiz/NVIDIA packages. This bug might be a symptom of that configuration, but I'm filing it just in case, because if it's not then it's super high-priority ... A few days ago I upgraded gnome-control-center to the latest Hardy version and my touchpad stopped working. It would work in the GDM greeter, but after logging in it was completely non-functional. After a bunch of troubleshooting, I eventually figured out that the problem was that it was literally being disabled after login; i.e., "synclient -l" showed that TouchpadOff was 1. Eventually I figured out that Gnome had added an option to disable the touchpad (in bug 184913) and that it was on! (i.e., disabled.) After checking "Enabled" in System -> Preferences -> Mouse -> Touchpad there is no longer any problem, but this suggests that other people who upgrade will lose their touchpads too. The default should definitely be for it to be enabled. $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 7.10 Release:7.10 $ apt-cache policy gnome-control-center gnome-control-center: Installed: 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu4 Candidate: 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu4 Version table: *** 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu4 0 -1 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1:2.20.1-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com gutsy-updates/main Packages 1:2.20.0.1-0ubuntu5 0 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com gutsy/main Packages ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Hardy] Synaptics touchpad disabled by default after upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219468 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 127944] Re: [gutsy] nspluginviewer hogs the CPU
I have 4 users (family) on my home machine - the other 3 use kde. Almost every day the machine (3GHz core 2 duo) comes to a crawl when 2 or more nspluginviewer processes (presumably started by konqueror) use up all cpu time. Similar problems have been reported by many since July 2007. The solution seems to be known since August 2007 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=294385 Now the discussion seems to have ended ... I am certainly happy that the solution is known, but I would be nice if it also got implemented (in gutsy). It does not help just to hear that bug X is a duplicate of bug Y. I have been killing nspluginviewer processes for months now, but I am not always around when this is necessary, and my family is getting frustrated. (To be honest, even more frustration comes from another bug, presumably in the nvidia driver used in gutsy, where the screen just goes black, periodically, for several minutes.) What am I supposed to do? Until 5 Months ago, on the previous machine, I used Debian unstable (for several years, after many years of using Slackware). I never had to suffer that long from any bug before a package became available that fixed it. If the answer is to wait each time for a new release of Ubuntu, then I would switch back to Debian. Another answer may be to finally get rid of kde. (Most problems that I have encountered lately are due to bad behavior of kde in multi-user environments.) [Bug 218015] Re: rhythmbox switches to default pulseaudio output on track change
You are correct in how it works, however I see it as a bug because it doesn't make any sense from a usability point of view. If you tell the system that rb should be outputting to (say) your external sound card, or another computer, you don't want it to revert when the track changes. That means that every 4 or 5 minutes you're going to have to change the settings again. Even with the crossfader plugin turned on, when you pause it closes the stream and so goes back to default on resume, which is still annoying. The ideal solution would be for RB to behave like it did until about a week ago, where it held the stream open even when not playing, so that it always came out the same device. Hi, Thanks for the info you sent. But as it doesn't actually correct whatever is wrong with the Molecule screensaver module, I would not call it a "fix", but only a workaround. My own "fix" is to make darn sure I never select that module from the list. As the author has very correctly described, this bug comes into scene when deleting files on a directory with many files -- or -- when deleting many files, period. Those files were images on a local drive, I had preview turned on and I selected a lot but not all files in the directory. CPU was busy and deletions occured at a rate of 1 each 6 seconds (on a 1450 file count directory). After some 500 items got deleted the average deletion time went down a little bit to 3 or 4 seconds. It was impossible to measure the correct O(n) since the times where not continuous -- I mean, some times it deleted 10 entries in a second, some other times a single entry took more than 10 seconds to delete. I thought of some kind of mutex problems leading to temporary dead locks, but since the CPU stayed at maximum all time I guess it may be something else -- or simply a busy mutex waiting. After 500 or so left entries, deletion happened like a flash until only my 181 unselected files where there. [Bug 218015] Re: rhythmbox switches to default pulseaudio output on track change
Thanks Eythian, I see what you mean, but you will have to convince me this is a bug. You are routing an individual stream to a new location, so when Rhythmbox opens a new stream for the next song (when not in crossfade mode), the old routing isn't going to apply. That makes sense to me. If you want to permanently route Rhythmbox to a new destination, I feel like there is a more proper way, though unfortunately I don't know it! [Bug 219385] [NEW] File filters can make file selection dialog too wide for screen
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-desktop-environment This bug occurs in Firefox but is likely related to the generic Gnome file-selection-dialog rather than application specific. In this case our website is calling OS file dialog via Firefox and JS/Flash, passing in a filter with a description (eg. "Photos and Videos"), and file extension-matching pattern (eg. "*.mov;*.mpg;*.avi;*.jpg") Windows dialogs tend to truncate this list, and expand only the drop- down when selected, open and active. Ubuntu/Gnome appears to make the dialog width match the width of the filter drop-down, which is quite long due to the number of file types and mixed-case scenarios (eg. *.jpg;*.JPG) Due to the amount of file formats we're filtering based on, the dialog box can easily grow wider than the user's display permits. See screenshot for illustration: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3215/2403694395_ca70740726.jpg Expected behavior would be to truncate the file filter list display past a certain point to prevent dialog box from growing too large. Our testing confirms this behavior in both Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04RC. This bug prevents Ubuntu users from being able to use the advanced upload tool on Flickr.com from Firefox. ** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: meta-gnome2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: firefox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- File filters can make file selection dialog too wide for screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219385 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to meta-gnome2 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 191475] Re: [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications
Kivech, VLC wouldn't autoplay with the current launch command even if it was added to the list, so we just need to wait for a return of the ability to launch by command string. Please ignore the workaround I posted above, as the per-user method is a little bit tricky compared with the following system-wide approach: First of all, if you followed my other crappy method, open the Terminal and delete that file in ~/.local/share/applications, as it's not needed with the system-wide approach; rm ~/.local/share/applications/vlc.desktop Keep the Terminal open and copy and paste this command into it: gksudo gedit /etc/gnome/defaults.list Change the line "x-content/video-dvd=totem.desktop" to "x-content/video-dvd=vlc.desktop". Close and save. Note: You need to repeat the following steps each time VLC is updated. Next, edit the following two files by pressing alt+f2, typing your password and then by navigating to both /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop and /usr/share/app-install/desktop/vlc.desktop. Right-click on them and select "Properties" in the context menu, then replace the "exec=vlc %U" launch command of both files to: exec=vlc --vout-filter deinterlace --deinterlace-mode blend --volume 512 %m Close and save both files. Finally, navigate to Nautilus>Edit>Preferences>Media>DVD Video, select VLC and then reboot or logout before you insert a DVD. [Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
I think there are case where it is very important to retain copy buffer : Have you ever tried to create a filter with a header in evolution ? A natural way would be : - Show source message - Select and copy desired header - Close window - Go to Edit > Filters > New > - Paste Unfortunately, it doesn't work, because of what has been said above... I have to keep the window open, and once filter is created, go back to find it in order to close it... But I thought selection buffer (X-managed) was different from copy-paste (WM managed)... but even CTRL-C doesn't retain clipboard... It is my #1 wishlist/bugfix as I run into it very often... Worst, it seems to me that even if selection buffer worked that way, copy-paste used to behave as expected... maybe in my days of using windowmaker ? Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information.
