[Bug 223179] Re: not rewinds to top

2008-04-27 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 223390] [NEW] unable to play ipod media with plugin loaded

2008-04-27 Thread Rob Morris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

rhythmbox 0.11.2

After connecting my ipod, I can see the content and scroll it, but when
I try to play a song, it tells me that the plugin needed is not present,
even though all plugins are loaded and enabled. I checked the install
through synaptic, and it says nothing is broken. Any thoughts? I am an

[Bug 223389] [NEW] 8.04 Gnome panel Date and Time locks panel on Startup

2008-04-27 Thread Nikolaus.x
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I have observed this issue in the Released 8.04 as well as various alpha
versions. When I startup Ubuntu and if I immediately proceed to open
the Date/Time in Gnome Panel, then the entires panel becomes
unresponsive. I am unable to click on the On button to select a
Restart, and if I Ctrl+Alt+Del and click on Restart, Ubuntu then also
does not Restart. I was able to use Switch User, but when Ubuntu Gnome
came back up the Gnome Panel was mostly blank. This issue does not seem
to occur if upon Ubuntu startup I don't immediately go to Date Time
then Gnome panel seems to act normally.

is there anything that i can disable to get this to go away? i don't use

i ended up creating a shell script called gnome-session in my bin

my xinitrc runs this wrapper script instead, which seems to fix this.
the advantage being that it works with any display manager and with

[Bug 223418] [NEW] System tray loads with all non-applet icons popped out into windows

2008-04-27 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running pure up-to-date Hardy final. When
logging in, I often (but not always) see a bug where the system tray
loads in a state where all of the system tray icons for my session
startup programs are popped out into tiny windows at the top-left of
the screen (see screenshots). The icons for the standard set of gnome
applets behave correctly though.

When in this state, any system tray program loaded after login will ALSO
display its icon in a tiny popped-out window. However, the condition can
be cleared by running killall gnome-panel (forcing it to restart), but
sometimes you must do this several times for the problem to go away.
Similarly, if the bug in NOT manifesting, restarting gnome-panel in this
way will eventually bring it back.

I have noticed that when the bug occurs, the popped-out windows usually
start showing up BEFORE the system tray has fully loaded, which suggests
to me that the problem may be due to the system tray taking too long to
load.

The bug occurs both with and without desktop effects enabled.

[Bug 200337] Re: CD/DVD burning broken in hardy

2008-04-27 Thread Dave
Similar problem here.

$ growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/hdb=/home/me/iso/not-a-copyrighted-
movie.iso

:-( /dev/hdb=/home/me/iso/not-a-copyrighted-movie.iso: unexpected
errno: No such file or directory

##
At this point you will just have to trust me that this file is present. The
command worked fine under Ubuntu 7.10 , but fails under 8.04. I can still boot
into my Debian partition to make the dvd with that command.

Subject: [Bug 223418] [NEW] System tray loads with all non-applet
iconspopped out into windows

[Bug 218434] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-04-27 Thread Ovation1357
I've done a lot more work on this tonight and have the following
information to submit:

Workaround
---
This isn't really a workaround as you won't have any keyring functionality but
at least you can log in.
1) Enable login by disabling the gnome keyring PAM Module:
# cp /etc/pam.d/gdm /etc/pam.d/gdm.old
* Edit /etc/pam.d/gdm and delete all lines which reference
'pam_gnome_keyring.so' (Expect to find 2 lines)
2) Restart GDM or Reboot
3) Log in and you should get in, but obviously without the Keyring features.

Reproduction
-
The occurrence of this bug seems most prevalent on USB, Compact Flash (attached
via IDE) and SCSI based boot devices.
1) Use the Workaround above to be able to log in as a user.
2) Open a terminal
3) Run:
# echo password | /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-manager -f --login
N.B. password would normally be the user's password it crashes regardless of
what you give it.
4) The keyring daemon should now list it's environment variables, a few
messasges, a warning and then will visibly die with a SEGV.
NOTE: Allowing gnome-keyring-daemon to daemonize itself with the '-d' option
(as it gets called from the PAM module) will surpress all useful messages
including the SEGV notification!!

Debug

I have attached gdb to gnome-keyring-manager and captured a full backtrace,
register info and tread backtrace at the point of SEGV. As I ran gdb pointed
at the sources for keyring-daemon I have also captured 'list'.

On the console I get the following output:
** Message: adding removable location: volume_label_Ubuntu_8_04_i386 at
/media/cdrom0
** Message: adding removable location:
volume_uuid_87cfbf2f_6fcb_42cb_95ef_92e3aec6d4f1 at /

** (gnome-keyring-daemon:6249): WARNING **: location device 'FILE' already
registered at: /

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

It seems that gnome-keyring-daemon is being screwed up while it tries to
probe the HAL about storage - This might explain the apparent
correlation between boot disk type and whether one sees the bug.

We die in hal_device_property() at gkr-location.c:324

 323 locvol = g_hash_table_lookup (pv-volumes_by_name, name);
 324 locvol-hal_volume = TRUE;

It seems that we might benefit from some kind of bounds check in this
code as we seem to be taking it as gospel that 'locvol' will always
return a valid address.

The SEGV happens while executing the instruction @ 0x080759c7 - This has
been consistent throughout my old /var/log/messages files:

0x080759c2 hal_device_property+834: call 0x804f8e0 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
0x080759c7 hal_device_property+839: movl $0x1,0x14(%eax)
0x080759ce hal_device_property+846: jmp0x80758a5
hal_device_property+549

So in order to set locvol-hal_volume=TRUE we take $eax + 0x14,
dereference it and write a gboolean there. This is fine for the first
few volumes and $eax always = 0x80ca828 which I trust is the valid
address of a GkrLocationVolume structure. But when I get a SEGV $eax = 0
(which helps me understand the fact the segfault is reported at
'0014' in /var/log/messages) - of course, 0x14 is not a vaild
address.

The reason we SEGV'd is because g_hash_table_lookup(pv-volumes_by_name,
name) returned NULL. An educated guess tells me that NULL is probably a
valid return if 'name' wasn't found in the hash, but more investigation
needs to be done in whether a simply if ( locvol != null) check can be
added or whether g_hash_table_lookup() should never return NULL.

Anyway, I've included the tee output of my gdb session which will
hopefully be of use to someone who knows more about the linux HAL.

If anyone wants me to gather any other information let me know, but I
may need some instructions..

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, there's no stacktrace of the crash. Please
follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your
crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

I had this problem too, I upgraded from 7.10 with alternate CD. The
gnome-terminal and fluxbox menu font both had the problem.

In my laptop, i fixed it as following:

1, cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
2, sudo rm 10-hinting-medium.conf
3, sudo ln -s ../conf.avail/10-hinting-full.conf

then restart gnome-terminal, it works!

[Bug 25931] Re: Failed to initalize HAL.

2008-04-27 Thread Martin Pitt
Daniel,

indeed the priorities are wrong for you. It should be S24, not S12
(that's too early and races with dbus). So far the upgrade only forces
the symlinks to be correct for upgrades from dapper, not from gutsy.
Seems we have to do that for those upgrades as well.

Argh, that was solved for dbus already.

** Description changed:

This seems to be a fairly common bug. However, none of the solutions I have
come
across in previous bug repors have helped me. When I run Ubuntu, just like
  everyone else, I get

  Failed to initalize HAL.

I can continue to use the GUI for a few minutes, but eventually (especially
when
navigating the filesystem/CD-ROM,) the system hangs and I am forced to reboot.

Though I am very new to Linux, I will help in the analysis in any way I
  can.

+ - Set the rc.d symlinks to start level 12, to get to the situation many bug
reporters end up with for some reason:
+ sudo update-rc.d -f hal remove
+ sudo update-rc.d hal start 12 2 3 4 5 . stop 12 1
+ - (optional, since racy): Set CONCURRENCY=shell in /etc/init.d/rc, boot, and
watch hal fail to load
+ - upgrade to the new hardy-proposed version (0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu8), check that
the rc symlinks are now at S24, and that the system boots properly with
CONCURRENCY=shell.

2008-04-27 Thread Martin Pitt
BTW, did you guys use automatix, or any other third-party tune your
