[Bug 212098] Re: easy file sharing not notifying about logout/login
I understand that modifying groups requires a logout (although I've been hacking UNIX for 20+ years and I still don't really understand why that's true). But it's monumentally sucky to have to log out, even if there's some dialog that tells you you need to do it. I don't see why nautilus-share cannot be included as part of the base distribution so that this is not necessary. But, if it indeed cannot be, then maybe we should change the base package to add the sambashare group, even though it's not used by any packages until nautilus-share is installed. User accounts can be added to that group as they would be other groups, when the user account is created. This would fix the need to log out/in due to group updates. -- easy file sharing not notifying about logout/login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212098 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 244779] [NEW] permission denied when removing a directory via SSH
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs If I connect to my SSH server using the connect to server function, it pops up Nautilus and shows my folder. [Bug 244779] Re: permission denied when removing a directory via SSH
The SSH server is an Ubuntu 5.10 with openssh-server. But, doing some more tests, I discovered that the bug actually only occurs when trying to remove a folder which is located inside an SMB mount point. Here is my configuration: I have an account name public, with a home folder in /home/public (drwxr-xr-x public public) On startup, I run the following: mount -t smbfs -o username=XXX,password=XXX,ip=XXX,iocharset=utf8,uid=public,codepage=cp437,gid=public,rw //XXX/share /home/public/share So, I then have a /home/public/share which is a SMB mounted folder (drwxr-xr-x public public). Then, I create a folder test in /home/public/share with a bunch of folders and files inside (all belong to public.public with rw rights). Now, if I try to remove this folder with Nautilus, I get a permission denied error and not file gets removed. But if I run rm -rf test from the CLI (logged as public user), it works fine. If, however, I move the test folder from /home/public/share to /home/public, I can remove it from Nautilus without any permission denied error. Ok, I think that Maurizio and I probably found out where the bug is. 1) emblems translated strings are in gnome-icon-theme. 2) with human-icon-theme these strings remain untranslated. 3) installing tango-icon-theme, strings are correctly translated indipendently from which set of icons is selected, and emblem icons are the tango one. so, probably human-icon-theme doesn't point to gnome-icon-theme strings correctly. [Bug 189814] Re: HAL crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password
** Changed in: hal (Ubuntu) Status: New = Triaged ** Changed in: libsmbios Status: New = Confirmed ** Summary changed: - HAL crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password + HAL lockups or crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password ** Description changed: This description is totally rewritten by Andrea Ratto (LP andrearatto) to recap the situation. The root cause has been really hard to find as it seemed a kernel issue related to the touchpad at first. The problem reported here and its cause have already been confirmed by at least 5 users. This bug refers primarily to HAL, but also relates to libsmbios. It is triggered by gnome-power-manager, but it's not its fault. Symptoms: very frequent temporary lock-ups on input after some inactivity frequent hard lock-ups with CAPS lock and NUM lock flashing very frequent loss of synchronization with the touchpad, which then looses advanced functionalities; with this in dmesg [ 804.829840] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 4 bytes away. [ 807.405427] psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request [ 810.926845] input: PS/2 Mouse as /devices/virtual/input/input9 [ 810.973805] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input10 Affected hardware: dell laptops with a BIOS password set (probably all/most of them) Releases affected - hardy for sure, probably intrepid too. gusty is not affected. + hardy, intrepid. gusty is not affected. Other distro are affected too, e.g. Fedora 9. What is known so far: gnome-power-manager tries to dim the brightness of the screen after some inactivity and then reset it upon input. This is a default setting, so the user has no clue of what might be causing the issue. gnome-power-manager calls HAL to do the job. HAL on dell machines, since hardy, uses libsmbios for brightness setting. Libsmbios needs the BIOS password even to change the brightness and HAL has no way to tell it that password, as of now. Some users have also reported that libsmbios does not work even from the command line utility, specifying the pass. However, instead of just printing an error when it fails, it makes the computer lock for a few seconds, due to the direct interaction with the bios on a very low level. The kernel has then problems reading input events and might crash. These lock-ups should also be avoided in libsmbios, as that is really ugly. However it needs root privileges and it's HAL who is calling it again and again when it should not, so the lockups are more HAL's fault. Testing/repoducing: 1: of course using gnome and gnome-power-manager, setting Dim display when idle to enabled. Same effects can be achieved by: 2: using the command /usr/sbin/dellLcdBrightness from libsmbios-bin package. Here's a command that rapidly switch brightness 10 times: for x in `seq 1 10`; do sudo dellLcdBrightness -a -v 1;sleep 0.1; sudo dellLcdBrightness -a -v 5; done #Warning it may hang your machine 3: the brightness applet of the gnome-panel. A possible elegant solution: * Correct HAL's detection of brightness setting capability on dell, so that it only reports it when it can be set with no errors. It might require using some test method in libsmbios, which I don't know if it is present or has to be added. Maybe also add some way for HAL to read the bios password from config files if the user wishes so. (This is probably somewhat already planned) Solving the stalling in libsmbios might prevent crashes, but yet HAL would keep calling it and get errors, so a fix in HAL is needed. Less elegant: turn off HAL's usage of libsmbios in one of its config files and have users who want it to manually set it. possible temporary workarounds for users experiencing this: - unset the bios password - blacklist the dcdbas kernel module - disable dimming in gnome-power - I don't know how to disable this functionality from HAL, but that would be the best workaround. [Bug 244865] [NEW] Emptying Trash:/// slowed to freeze. Now broken.
Public bug reported: I went to Trash (Trash:///), clicked empty. I had at least around 5GBs in there. I confirmed delete, and the operation dialog came up, and said Preparing. It stayed like this for over a minute. My system slowed to a near freeze. I was able to click Cancel. It took about another minute to respond to the click, but eventually canceled. Everything in the trash was gone. I closed it, and opened it back up. Trash:/// is now so slow it's unusable (almost appears frozen), difficult to close, doesn't allow me to open any other nautilus windows, and it won't show deleted files. I looked in /home/myname/.local/share/Trash/files, and there was nothing there. I looked in /home/myname/.local/share/Trash/info, and there was a firefox.desktop.trashinfo file. I deleted that, but it didn't help. If I now delete something, it does show up in both of these folders - but not in Trash:///. When I go into either of those folders, my mouse pointer turns into the pointing finger symbol - not sure if this is relevant. Under Trash:///, the Empty button highlights, but files do not show. If I start nautilus (Trash:///) through the terminal, I get: (nautilus:6054): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_utf8_collate: assertion `str1 != NULL' failed This repeats indefinitely as the Trash:/// window instantly slows to a near freeze. [Bug 228348] Re: Problem changing names to files
Hello friends, I do have a clue on what's happening: This I just experienced recently and am inclined to say that the reason one can not rename the file to a particular fileName is that there is a launcher or perhaps some metalink pointing to a folder with the particular fileName AT THE LOCATION WHERE THE FOLDER IS TO BE RENAMED. The one problem is with the error-message which implies that there is already a folder with that name'. This happened in my Desktop, and HAS NOTHING TO DO with FAT-32. This happened to me when I copied a folder on the desk top named name1 to some place else. Then in that somewhere else, I renamed the file to name2 and it was accepted. Then when I wanted the renamed folder back to the Desktop, the operation was OK. But a launcher originally within that folder would not work. So I tried to rename name2 back to name1 and I got exactly the error-message in this thread. I am sure I can fix the problem by changing launcher properties and renaming things to match. If not I just delete things and recreate back original folder and launcher.
