[Bug 247775] [NEW] Nautilus dies easily on bad gconf data (design flaw)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Symptom: Immediate crash on attempt to open the Edit/Preferences dialog. This occurred every time until the cause was found: While digging through backtrace I noticed this: #6 0xb7f05d5e in eel_preferences_get (name=0x87d6620 "preferences/default_folder_viewer") at eel-preferences.c:480 This corresponds to dummy error printed on console at time of crash: assertion failed: (value->type == GCONF_VALUE_STRING) Sure enough, /apps/nautilus/preferences/default_folder_viewer value was set to an integer. Changed back to default type/value (String / icon_view) in gconf-editor and problem disappeared. So I suppose there are two questions here: 1.) How did it get set that way? (probably will never know..) 2.) Why is gconf (or perhaps libeel2) type handling not more robust? Something so trivial ought not have the potential to be so catastrophic. This problem was ridiculously hard to track down and the average user would never be able to fix something like this, nor would an intermediate user be able to find a solution by googling. (no bug-buddy, no nautilus debug log was generated, and it could have been any gconf value corrupted) Correct behavior should be to reset the bad value to its default as a "graceful failure" mode, instead of just dying without any (user apparent) explanation. Anyone know if upstream has considered a better solution? note: I'm not a GNOME dev.. just switched from being a long-time KDE user actually :) ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Fri Jul 11 22:29:44 2008 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/nautilus NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Package: nautilus 1:2.22.3-0ubuntu2 PackageArchitecture: i386 ProcEnviron: PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: nautilus Uname: Linux 2.6.24-19-386 i686 ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug -- Nautilus dies easily on bad gconf data (design flaw) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/247775 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I hope that there is something in there that you can use. I did notice that the console generated an error message when I launched Evolution about being unable to connect to subscribed folders. [Bug 210468] Re: try to access a .Trash-$USER directory on autofs mounts
If the messages have stopped appearing in your logs, then the problem you're having is clearly not related to this bug, since this bug is about autofs .Trash requests. Bug comments are not really the best way to ask for help, unless it's about the bug in question. You should either file a bug against the package which appears to be at fault here, which would be either Nautilus or autofs (do you get the same behavior when you try to access the automount from the command line? That should tell you which package is likely at fault), or else maybe ask on the Ubuntu user forums. When you do find the right place to ask, be sure to give more information about exactly which versions you're using, how your automount maps are distributed, what they contain (for example the map that contains the directory you're trying to access via Nautilus), whether it happens every single time or only when the filesystem is not mounted already (or only if you try to re-access the filesystem after automount has unmounted it), etc. -- try to access a .Trash-$USER directory on autofs mounts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/210468 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is the registrant for gvfs. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 214507] Re: evolution doesn't close properly
Ah well... @Adriaan: we actually want to kill evo, so that a backtrace would be generated. Unfortunately, apport does not kick in... 'evolution --force- shutdown' is almost the same as a 'kill' on evo and its components, this is why you get the warning when you restart. But it is still not a nice way of closing evo. @rom: OK. I really do not know why apport did not kick in. [Bug 207139] Re: can't scroll whilst images are loading
There are two fixes on the upstream bug: one for Evo, and one for gtkhtml. Upstream has released the fixes for both stable (2.22.3.1) and trunk (2.23.5). [Bug 216871] Re: gdm uses incorrect resolution
Here's how I fixed the gdm resolution problem on my system (running ubuntu 8.04 32-bit desktop). In a shell... 1) xrandr -q This showed the device name used for my monitor (VGA-0) and available resolution modes. The one I wanted (1280x1024) was included in the list. 2) I edited /etc/gdm/Init/Default to add the line shown below: xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024 I put the line near the top of the file, just below the OLD_IFS=$IFS$ statement. 3) When I restarted X, gdm came up with 1280x1024 resolution, as did my subsequent fluxbox session. -- gdm uses incorrect resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/216871 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. [Bug 247619] [NEW] "F Spot" in Ubuntu Hardy can't not import pictures from a MMC card
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Because of my specific interest for this application, I'd want to use F Spot under Ubuntu (Gnome) to import, process and export all my pictures, coming from a MINOLTA Dimage A200 supporting MMC cards and from a Panasonic FX supporting SD cards. Unfortunately, this application f-spot 0.4.3.1 inside Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 (Gnome Desktop) fails to import pictures contained in the MMC cards loaded by my MINOLTA. To load my pictures into my PC, I use an USB internal device, which functions perfectly under Windows XP (with Photoshop Elements 4), and with Digikam under Gnome or KDE desktops, either with SD or MMC cards; when I insert the MMC card into the slot of the USB device, an "Media 1.0 Gio" icon appears, and opening the media leads to a DCIM folder which contains folders named "/media/disk-1/DCIM/10180405" for example, but these last folders are said to contain no pictures when opened by the Gnome navigator; from these folders F. Spot imports only one picture and stops, although there is no problem with Dgikam. So I think there is something wrong between Fspot application and/or Gnome Desktop software, versus MMC cards and/or the Dimage A200 camera. I think that the conjunction of F. Spot and The Gimp consists in the best way of processing pictures under Ubuntu for an "amateur" and I regret what happened in my case. So many thanks for a solution adapted to a beginner very interested in moving from Windows/ Photoshop to Linux. [Bug 247691] [NEW] GDM Init/Default runs xrdb trying to merge a directory instead of a file
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm The Init script for GDM: /etc/gdm/Init/Default is looking to see if /etc/X11/Xresources is a file. If it is, it merges the entries in that file into the X server's resources. Here's the problem code from /etc/gdm/Init/Default: -- sysresources=/etc/X11/Xresources # merge in defaults if [ -f "$sysresources" ]; then xrdb -merge "$sysresources" fi -- The problem is, /etc/X11/Xresources is a directory. It contains a file called 'x11-common'. So, the system Xresources never get merged. The GDM Init/Default script should be modified to merge any files found in that directory, but I think the directory should be named with a '.d' suffix. IE, it should be: /etc/X11/Xresources.d Then, the x11-common package should be modified to put it's "x11-common" resource file into the new /etc/X11/Xresources.d directory. This would be similar to the way /etc/X11/Xsession.d is handled but we don't need to "source" the files, we need to "merge" them with xrdb. [Bug 238463] Re: URL handling in gnome-terminal
I also just upgraded from Dapper to Hardy, and am experiencing this. Long URLs only get their first line recognized. Oddly, sometimes it works fine. If I paste a long URL into vi or the command line, the whole thing is recognized. If I cat a file with a long URL, the whole thing is recognized. But viewing an email message within mutt, it is not. (Could it have something to do with curses, or an application doing a single write(2) containing the whole URL?) I think it's better to err on the side of recognizing too much, since it's more rare for a URL to end exactly at a line boundary than it is for one to be arbitrarily longer. -- URL handling in gnome-terminal https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238463 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 185311] Re: hardy, locking assertion failure, xorg/libsdl
Bryce, thanks for the update and your good work on the issue. Keeping the community in the loop is one reason why I'm glad I switched over to Ubuntu back when I did, even if it means tripping over an odd bug or two. I really hope Canonical decides to unroll the xcb stuff in libX11 (and perhaps release an updated Compiz that uses its own private xcb+X11). Even if you guys think you understand all the broken cases, I'm sure there will be piles of older software that will simply break (and won't be reported here), leaving a lot of frustrated users and their applications. Even if your updates expose bugs in the user client application itself, the user will still blame Ubuntu, and might not have any recourse for updating their old/unmaintained/vendor no longer exists/etc software. I think the trade off, breaking an untold amount of old applications (none of the work arounds work me at all, for example) for compiz, just isn't worth it. Having two seperate libX11 and libX11xcb libraries would allow a gradual (and distinct) migration route for applications (well, more for toolkits). Toolkits can switch to the X11+xcb one (or ideally, pure xcb) at their own, hopefully well tested, pace.
