I don't understand from the description how the problem manifests
itself. "Broke my GNOME"? Are you thrown back to the gdm greeter just
after logging in? Does a failsafe gnome or terminal session work? Any
errors is gdm.log? Are you using compiz?

[Bug 66869] Re: Double click on "Floppy Drive" in Computer location jumps to / directory

2008-07-13 Thread USSR
I would like to comment that the bug is still in hardy, but the problem
is it will not even open up the Floppy drive, as well as USB drives and
MP3 Players as well.

I need to manually mount them in order to make all these work.

My fstab:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

#

# -- This file has been automaticly generated by ntfs-config --

#

#

proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

# Entry for /dev/hda1 :

UUID=d78bea77-675b-435f-8312-c160d0352d06 / ext3 defaults,errors
=remount-ro 0 0

# Entry for /dev/hda5 :

UUID=bdbb6811-a510-40ff-a6f0-92c621829ef9 none swap sw 0 0

# Entry for /dev/hdb1:

UUID=B078AF2C78AEEFF0 /media/hdb ntfs defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 0

/dev/hdb5 /media/hdb2 ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 0

Seriously, one thing that interests me most is that whether:
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,auto,exec 0 0

has added or not makes no difference for mounting in floppies.

There is no similar line for USB devices at all.

Can you enable the hardy-proposed and hardy-updates repositories,
install EnvyNG so as to install the latest release of the driver?

[Bug 242618] Re: Nautilus and other gnome apps using incorrect umask for new directories

2008-07-13 Thread Petr Stehlik
Sebastien, do you really want more people to open the same bug to
increase priority of this? It is really a problem for many people - for
example imagine two (or more) users sharing the same computer - they
can't even sort out photos or music or anything (if one creates a folder
with common files like photos or music the others can't rename or delete
files in that folder).

Besides that, #241198 looks very much like duplicate of this bug so more
people are suffering, including me and my friends that I convinced to
switch from Windows to Ubuntu..

And there are more:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/item/200/
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+question/36843

I would really like to see this fixed ASAP as it's clearly a bug that
makes using the computer cumbersome (which is not what Ubuntu is about,
I believe).

Thanks!

[Bug 246969] Re: [Intrepid alpha1] gdmgreeter freezes in VMware Server 1.0.6

2008-07-13 Thread mejogid
I noticed that when this was occurring on VMWare Fusion (for OS X),
there was a constant buzzing sound around the time when the login tone
should happen - even if I had disabled the virtual sound card. After a
bit of trial and error, I thought this may be coming from the system
speaker, and it turns out unloading the module snd_pcsp prevents the
noise *and* the freezing when logging in.

It seems that this is two seperate bugs - Ubuntu using the system
speaker to play sounds on, and VMWare locking up when this piece of
virtual hardware is used for prolonged periods. The Ubuntu forums
thread - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=845844 - seems to deal
with the first problem, although I can't find a corresponding launchpad
bug, and VMWare probably need to be alerted of the second issue.

2008-07-13 Thread mcas
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively" [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 247364] Re: Some emails are not displayed but are saved in the mailbox file

Sorry for not replying earlier. I tested "View | Show Hidden Messages"
without success. Then trying to log with "env" resulted in a 60MB log
file which I don't think will help you any further.

One thing I'd like to know from you: If you take the attached file
"DemoEvolutionError_MailboxFile", put it into your mail folders and look
at the folder from within Evolution, what do you see? As you can see in
a text editor, the Mailbox file contains *six* email messages. However,
in my Evolution only *four* messages are displayed (see also my
screenshot in a message above:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15941361/ScreenshotAndMailboxFile.zip ).
So how many do you see in your Evolution?

[Bug 247997] Re: Playback stops when ipod is plugged in

2008-07-13 Thread Chris Coulson
Does playback actually stop, or does Rhythmbox appear unresponsive for a
period (causing the playback to halt)? The reason I ask, is because if
it is the latter, then it might be this upstream problem:

I could not reproduce this. Please provide information on how the remote
system is set up regarding $HOME and the current directory. Also please
test your patch, because from your screenshot it seems the -o option is
not accepted. This could indicate something else is wrong.

2008-07-13 Thread MartinE
Thanks a lot, Claudiu!

That does indeed seem to work. I'll try this for 2-3 days, and report
back unless I run into a crash again earlier.

I wonder though, was the BackingStore option enabled by default on
Ubuntu Hardy? I'd nerver heard of it before, so I don't think I enabled
it manually. Whatever.

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-07-13 Thread ian
My initial problem was a broken mtrr. I'm not sure if that's the fault
of Asus (motherboard), ATI, Intel or Linux... but fixing that lets me
get into X. Unfortunately I'm still having a problem (wait for it...)
with freezing on logout or user switch.

I added hardy-proposed (hardy-updates was already there) and installed
the envy drivers, still a hard lock on logout. Keyboard is blinking at
me as I type this on another machine.

I guess I should have done more research before buying the card, IE
actually checking out what state the radeonhd drivers were in. Or how
bad fglrx had gotten. It's more a little frustrating when I can barely
use the machine, let alone actually use the card for 3d.

[Bug 248129] [NEW] Wrong view when viewing a right-to-left document

2008-07-13 Thread Amir Khosroshahi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Right-to-left documents are set to a wrong view when they are opened and
when you navigate to another page. That is, the horizontal scroll bar is
put at the very left and the left part of the document is show-- which
is suitable only for left-to-right documents. So, this default behavior
should be corrected for RTL documents. The necessity to scroll to right
every time you go to another page is really annoying.

To reproduce the bug, make a document in Open Office Writer in a right-
to-left language (like Persian) and make a PDF file from it. Open the
file in Evince and you will see the problem.

[Bug 248135] [NEW] Internal GStreamer error: state change failed

2008-07-13 Thread Krupier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

This error appears while trying to hear what was recorded with gnome-
sound-recorder 2.22.0.

This might be alsa related. I cannot play anything after flashplayer have been
ued or I played epighany-game.
Normally I can play simultaneously several sources of audio like mplayer, totem
and gstreamer, but when want to hear something from a website through
flashplayer I must terminate all audio apps, then restart my browser (latest
Forefox 3.0 or Galeon)to be ableto hear anything. After hearing from that
source if I want to play music I need to kill browser and restart music-app and
so forth.
In other words flash libraries don't like gstreamer and/or mplayer.

My Ubuntu is always up-to-date and the problem appeared after upgrading
to Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron.

[Bug 220957] Re: Fails to see blank CD/DVDs for writing

2008-07-13 Thread Brendan
I have the same problem in that i can no longer access any media on
cdrom. My hardware is still fine on windows. But one thing to note is
that when i upgraded to Hardy (at release time), i was able to access a
music cd at least (didn't use any other feature from my dvd-rw). Since
i apply all updated software on a regular basis, i can only presume
something broke this ability. I can confirm i'm not able to mount any
data cdrom or dvdrom, and have similar output to commands as listed
above.

Noted above 2 x Pioneer models of DVD writers, mine is a Pioneer DVR-110

[Bug 220957] Re: Fails to see blank CD/DVDs for writing

2008-07-13 Thread Arthur
seeing as the last person to follow had issues in their pioneer 110D dvd
writer, i had a 112D dvd writer that wasn't working, and i had not
updated the firmware for quite sometime (1.5years or so). i swapped it
out to a windows machine just so i could update the firmware, after
doing so, reinstalled hardy and it worked once again for me with no
problems. i had even bought a sata burner which wasn't necessary, since
i didn't expect this to work, but it did, for me, and that doesn't mean
thats the solution to all these problems.

[Bug 139971] Re: SMB shares browsing in Nautilus doesn't work

2008-07-13 Thread Alessio Gaeta
It seems to me that gnome-vfs works fine (through command line and Firefox, at
least). The problems is Nautilus: it seems it doesn't sends user credentials,
but tries to connect to server as guest, ignoring the username in the uri, nor
sending the username currently logged in.
So maybe this bug should be reported against Nautilus.

[Bug 248169] [NEW] Wireless does not work unless I disable 'Roaming' on my NIC card also

2008-07-13 Thread Thomas Carson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

My first attempt at a bug report, please let me know what else you need.

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 completely updated as of 7/13/08.

I have a Linksys WUSB11 v2.8 wireless adapter to connect to my router
for the internet.

Through trial and error I have discovered that this adapter will not
work (although it does show up in ubuntu under Network) unless I have
enabled DHCP on the built in NIC/Ethernet port on my motherboard also.

So, to sum up.

1. My wusb11 v2.8 wireless adapter will NOT connect to the internet
unless:

2. In System - Admin - Network I go in there and change the setting for
my built in NIC/Ethernet port that is on my motherboard, from Roaming to
DHCP, then and only then will my wireless work.

3. Note, my wireless connection is also DHCP with a WEP 128 security
key.

4. Last note, my built in NIC/ethernet on my motherboard, does not have
a cord plugged into it at all.

Please let me know if you need any further information.

the conflicts is not a bug, glchess and gnome-games have similar files
so they can't be installed together but that's not required since gnome-
games has glchess

the bug was that gnome-games-data and glchess were not conflicting which
was leading to a broken installation, that has been fixed now by using a
correct conflicts there

[Bug 247228] Re: gedit is ridiculously slow (and does too much work)

2008-07-13 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
(The strace is zipped because it's 3.8 MB. Repetitive, though.)

Next I tried to do a backtrace of one of the funny 'time' calls. The
backtrace is done using gedit-dbgsym 2.22.1-0ubuntu1 (There's a slightly
newer version in the repositories, but I've no debug packages for that
one, and the behavior is identical in this case.)

Compare this run with the strace above; there are a few apparently
legitimate time calls early, then it enters a loop where it runs time a
few tens of thousand of times. I set up a break point on 'time',
backtraced its first occurrence, continued until it entered the "loop",
and then I backtraced a few more calls. They all seem very similar;
apparently they're related to parsing something called ~/.recently-
used.xbel

$ ls .recently-used* -la
-rw--- 1 bogdanb bogdanb 20456 2008-07-13 20:03 .recently-used
-rw-r--r-- 1 bogdanb bogdanb 4863100 2008-07-13 21:37 .recently-used.xbel
-rw-r--r-- 1 bogdanb bogdanb 4259840 2008-05-13 15:08 .recently-used.xbel.FXASAU

They're quite big (any real reason for that?), and even if gedit just
parses each on every start-up I imagine that would take a long time. The
file contains just a big list of entries like:

  http://freedesktop.org";>

  http://freedesktop.org";>

I've no idea why Gedit calls time for each entry (as it would seem it
does), nor why the file got so large.

I've seen some pages on the net on how to get rid of the file -- at
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-91154.html -- so apparently
others have been annoyed by it, but I still don't know exactly what's up
with it.

2008-07-13 Thread Percy Leonhardt
Hi,

what is the current state of this ticket? I am confused that it is only
marked as a wishlist because I am effected by this bug every day in
Hardy with active compiz.

Am I the only one experiencing this bug, are there any further
information needed or is there even some kind of workaround?

could you also not abuse the bug title to specify the version you are

have a title hardy specific, you should rather use the description to

[Bug 248127] Re: GDM freezes after user switches

2008-07-13 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2008-07-13 Thread Sebastien Bacher
discussing the settings if of no use, the issue has been confirmed and
is waiting for an upstream comment on the change, adding noise to the
bug will not make it be fixed quickly if the issue is just that people
are busy, you can try to comment on bugzilla though

[Bug 248143] Re: [Hardy] Drive icons do not change in Computer:/// on changing icon theme when assigned a custom icon.

2008-07-13 Thread Sayak Banerjee
Open computer:/// in a nautilus window. Right click on any drive and
select Properties. Click on the drive's image (icon) in the properties
window button to change the icon to a custom one. After changing the
icon, goto System->Preferences->Appearance, click Customize and click
Icons tab and select a different icon set. You will notice that the
drive's icon you just changed remains unchanged. It remains the same
icon that you had set manually.

Screenshots:

1. Normal settings with AER-OS-XK icons active:
http://i37.tinypic.com/noh544.jpg
2. Changed the drive icon to cookie: http://i36.tinypic.com/2n88mk5.jpg
3. Changed icon theme to Crashbit, bit drive icon still remains cookie:
http://i37.tinypic.com/5dmreq.jpg

Note: In (3), all drives except the cookie one changes. Changing the
cookie icon back to what it had initially (the AER-OS-XK HDD icon)
keeps the HDD icon unchanged on changing icon theme just like the cookie
icon is behaving now.

[Bug 248235] [NEW] error about resolving host name

2008-07-13 Thread jerryharsh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-nettool

After upgrading to HHeron, as user, when I type, "sudo gedit", I receive "sudo:
unable to resolve host hostname". If I am alread root and type, "gedit", I
receive "While connecting to the session Manager: Authentication rejected,
reason: none of the authentication protocols specified are supported and
host-based authentication failed".
Also, as I previous reported, I can no longer copy files over my local network
- I can view the Windows computers and their drives, but cannot copy.
I assume HHeron changed some of my settings, and would like to know which
ones.
Thanks.
The upgrade was just made in the last day, and is 2.6.24-19 generic for an AMD
X2.
Guess I'm back to the Gutsy image again.

[Bug 248236] [NEW] panel is blank at 1st login

2008-07-13 Thread Mr.UNOwen
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Just recently I was helping a friend switch to Ubuntu when I encounter a
few bugs. My friend has a MT3705 gateway laptop. The bug I encountered
is with the panel. Even though there's a bunch of stuff on the panel,
when I login for the first time, it's blank. No menu button or anything
of that sort. If I reload gnome-panel or re-login this problem goes
away. This happened when I updated Ubuntu (just a few days ago). I
installed Ubuntu with the most recent installation disc. Any way I had
to return the laptop, so for the now I can't provide any further
information other then it had ATI graphics and was able to do every
thing else include desktop effects (couldn't get the wireless internet
to work either).
