Sorry for the alarm. I noticed the cable connection icon in the lower left of my screen showed a break. Clicking on it corrected my problem. [Bug 247936] Re: Greeter application appear to be crashing ubuntu 8.10 ibex
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium Status: New = Invalid -- Greeter application appear to be crashing ubuntu 8.10 ibex https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/247936 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 251493] [NEW] Graphical problems with evolution - strikethrough and cursor not showing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I am running Hardy Heron (8.04.1 fully up to date and with backports etc.) on a Dell Latitude D830. When I run Evolution (2.22.3.1-0ubuntu1) deleted items are not displayed with a strikethrough (they are on my desktop system which has an almost identical setup on the SW side of things). Also when composing an e-mail the cursor does not always update and can leave behind ghost cursors which only disappear when you force an update of that bit of the window (e.g. by editing the text). Both these problems are purely in the graphical display - the underlying software seems to work OK - but can be quite annoying, particularly the cursor problem. I have no equivalent problems in any other pieces of software. I am running compiz, but the problem seems to appear even without compiz running. I am using the 169.12 version of the nvidia drivers on a Quadro NVS 140M at a resolution of 1920x1200. Changing resolution does not make any difference either To reproduce: Connect to IMAP for e-mail. Disable Hide Deleted Items Delete or move a mail. Deleted item is not displayed with strikethrough. Ctrl-E to expunge removes mail. Compose mail Type some text Move cursor using cursor buttons. After a while cursor may disappear or fail to be cleared correctly leaving vertical lines interspersed in your text. Let me know if you need any more info. [Bug 135324] Re: Gutsy: OpenOffice thumbnails transparent
Hi! I was quiet suprised when suddenly I saw odt-thumbnails in my document folder. Reinstalling on another system I was not able to reproduce this behaviour at first. I figured out, that Tracker is responsible for making the thumbnails of odt. files. But, I guess, you must run tracker-preferences first (as non-root user). There on the Files tab you should check the entry Generate thumbnails. After that wait for a while, maybe this will take effect at least after the next reboot or the next day. So, there's no script or anything. So I imported the .thumbnail/normal-folder into F-Spot and selected a preview of an odt-File. With Ctrl+I F-Spot shows meta data. It says: CreatorTool: tracker thumbnail factory Selecting another thumbnail file (this time of a .pdf-file) it says: Creator Tool: GNOME::ThumbnailFactory (you also can check these by xxd image.png xxd makes a hexdump and shows information included in it. Ok, so it's tracker. Thumbnails generated for .pdf files are well done, they even have a small black border and have no opacity/tranparency. The odt.thumbnails have a) no border b) are transparent. The binary responsible for the odt-thumbnails is: /usr/bin/tracker-thumbnailer from the package tracker. I searched for any options or preferences about how to generate these thumbnails. tracker-thumbnailer --help does not exist. and the manpage to tracker-thumbnailer offers no further options. In gconf-editor I either found any options for tracker. Anyone an idea how to change this behaviour? The out-of-the-box thumbnailing for odt-files with tracker is great. It's quite annoyingly though, e.g. when you have a non-solid-white background, then it's hard to see these thumbnails in nautilus. I append 2 screenshots, you can see the odt-thumbnails and the pdf- thumbnails, and the problem when a non-solid or darker background is set. [Bug 29787] Re: Backspace key in GNU Screen not detected correctly
That link is not the same issue; it has to do with the terminfo and stty disagreeing with eachother. Fixing either the terminfo or stty should fix the problem (they agree with each other in upstream screen AFAICT; they disagree in some packages). This bug has to do with vte-based terminals, such as xfce4-terminal and TerminalScreenlet, sending ascii NUL (^@) for backspace when they are set to auto-detect what to send for backspace, which is a different issue. Other backspace problems are nearly always misconfigurations of the environment. [Bug 251610] [NEW] seahorse crashes a lot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: seahorse I know there are several other bugs tracking seahorse crashes, but I wanted one open for what to do when seahorse crashes. At the present, I have found no better solution than running ssh-agent plain and then, in every single terminal I open, exporting the correct env vars and moving forward. This is insanely insane. Many of our workflows involve dozens of ssh connections, operating on hundreds of machines in datacenters via tools such as dsh. All of these rely on ssh-agent. When seahorse crashes (which it seems to do quite often), work becomes very painful. Is there some way to put a wrapper around seahorse to restart it when it crashes? [Bug 251613] [NEW] gdm Gnome sessions have no DRI
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm If I select Gnome (default), X starts without DRI (glxgears reports it missing) making compiz impossible to use. If I select failsafe terminal and then type 'gnome-session' to start gnome, DRI is present, and compiz works fine. I have tried reinstalling gdm to purge any modified configuration, but the problem persists. Other notes: - the utility 'compiz-check' fails the first two tests when under Gnome, but passes all under failsafe terminal - DRI is missing for all users when using Gnome gdm session, even pristine ones with default configs - DRI is present universally for users when running failsafe, or when starting session from xinit with gdm not running. I suspect this is something peculiar to my configuration, but I have not been able to diagnose what it could be. Problem began in feisty, and persists in hardy (8.04.1). If you have any ideas about how I could start to debug what's going on, I'm at your disposal. gdm version: 2.20.7-0ubuntu1.1 ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gdm Gnome sessions have no DRI https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251613 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I still can't reproduce this myself. The only situation where I can get this is if I edit a text file (which I have write permissions for) in a directory that I don't have write permissions in. ok, maybe sort by name can be included in the wish list. [Bug 218070] Re: Nautilus not showing the desktop icons wallpaper on login
doing rm -rf .gconf/apps/nautilus removes this problem for me, but when I go into the nautilus preferences and change the default icon size from 100% to 150%, the problem comes back (nautilus insatiably chews up CPU and memory). If I try switching the default icon size back, nautilus remains in the bad state. Attaching strace to nautilus shows that it's spinning with poll on an EAGAIN (as shown in the original report). After logging out and logging back in with default icon size set to 100%, everything is OK again.
